Look,,,,here is the scoop.

Residency training in Nigeria goes like this.....you write an exam called the primary (of which there are two flavours....West African, which carries more power....and National/Nigerian...which is just as hard). After you pass....you then get a place to do the residency (Which involves job interviews/exams). Then once you get the job...you work as a junior resident for two-three years....after which you write an exam that if you pass (it is a very tough exam) you become a senior resident. Then another three years....after which you write the exam that if you pass means you become a consultant. ALSO....you do a research project during the time you are a resident....and THAT project is part of your final exam for consultant.

So, sacking all the residents....means you have to replace like for like. And a common medical officer(Like me!)cannot just slip into the shoes of a senior resident....or even junior resident. To put it simply.....it is a disaster waiting to happen. And poor Mr Consultant would have a hard time of it....doing most of the jobs that senior resident is supposed to do.And students...the young medical students...would have a hard time of it.

It isn't that simple. You cannot replace experience.

Stop belittling yourself bro. Practice in every profession is beyong paper qualification.

In the labour market, I don't think anybody is indispensable. It will only cost a little more cash and inconvenience.

The best solution is to privatize the health sector to check the excesses of these quack doctors.

esof1: My candid opinion, the health sector should be privatized. Lemme see who these doctors will be asking for those irrelevant allowances.

Oh no....you wouldn't want that. grin

Privatizing the health sector will make doctors like me very happy....because we are going to get paid hefty salaries.

It is ordinary Nigerians like you that will suffer in the form of increased fees.....and increased health care costs. Especially for chronic illnesses like stroke, diabetes, even serious injury that requires long hospital stay.

(And even with a Health insurance scheme.....you will soon find out that your insurer won't pay for certain diseases. As one family friend found out with NHIS when his daughter came down with a serious illness.).

You are a doctor. True or false?
Yes,I am sir but that is not the crux of the matter.Common sense is enough for us to know that the decision of the FG will not solve the current problem.

there are only 27,000 medical doctors in Nigeria. you sack 16,000. you have less than 300 doctors in military, Navy and air force combined. nobody wants to come to Nigeria right now due to Ebola. where well you get replacement from?

I don't think this sacking of a thing is a good idea, at least not in dis period wen we r still battling eBola. Well we all know how it will end anyway, the association will negotiate with FG, nd GEJ will reinstate dem.. All na tactics by FG to get dem back on track. WE ARE ALREADY USE TO THE STYLE ND it's getting boring!!!

Let me explain further.

A Senior registrar in surgery, for instance, can perform very advanced types of surgery. For example....as a medical student I worked under a Senior registrar who was doing delicate surgery for congenital intestine problems(the gent is now a consultant surgeon). Let's say I was to replace him. Now I know some surgical skills....but I hardly have the knowledge base to do such type of surgery. (And anyways....I want to become an internist! wink).

A senior registrar knows a lot more than a junior registrar , or even a medical officer/senior house officer,...or house officer (that's the pecking order amongst us docs.). Asking a medical officer to replace a senior reg is the same as asking a primary one school teacher to teach Advanced Calculus 502 to a group of postgraduate Maths students at university.

NMA have over abuse strike as a resort to achieve their cheap purpose, those saying that the masses will suffer failed to know that the masses don't have sympathy for NMA again, they are not the only govt employee but are set of selfish people neglecting the poor masses whom they take oat to serve. FG should take any action deem feat for the nation because all lives are precious

prettyprettywow: so allowing others to become directors, appointment of surgoen general, consultants, giving mlsc license for importation of IVD, are the things putting the hospitals in a mess?
Are these the only items you saw on the demand list? There are 24 of the demands. Get a copy, read through, then judge.

tiamiyukunle69: Health sector that is already paralyzed....yet you are terminating the employment of 16000 resident doctors knowing fully well that these guys do most of the job in the so called tertiary hospitals.....It's just unfortunate that the poor will suffer the more because the rich knows that short cut to better health care. All they need do is to travel abroad.....At times I wonder why God created me in this country. SMH angry

They head to private hospitals....and some of these hospitals do have residents!(One of OBJ's initiatives)

But even then....the private hospitals cannot do everything.....so a lot of people do suffer in silence.

The reality is that there is a lot wrong with the health care system in Nigeria. I would love to see a situation....personally speaking....where NMA and JOHESU got together and agitated for increased funding for health care in Nigeria......and extension of the NHIS system to cover all Nigerians...not just salary earners whose employers have registered for the thing.

Indeed....a key demand of many previous strikes has been for improvements in training and health care. (The Press focuses on the salary increase bit ).

onyxo76: just like that? do you think its every doctor that is interested in working as a resident? Besides they are not fools, who will want to work in a hostile environment with all these health sector problems..

Most doctors are interested in doing residency. You do not realise that teaching hospitals organize a stringent recruitment exercise for their resident doctors. Some doctors eventually are unable to get a slot. This is their chance.

So the NMA goes on strike and the government sacks resident doctors, why not sack all the NMA members since residents are only a section of the NMA, and what makes the government think NMA would call off its strike after sacking some of her members. All doctors in Nigeria are members of the NMA so who would restore the services in the hospitals as the government is demanding.
Senseless government

This is what jonathan should do to those so-called ASUU(P) lecturers honestly. Doctors have say and they may win this but ASUU(P)........ Jonathan!! Do the right thing at the right time. When ASUU(P) lecturers (who earn hundreds of thousands) go on strike, sack them, when doctors go on strike liase with them. They can be nice you know?? And they deserve to be treated WELL. Unlike lecturers who sleep with students 'abi'??

WRONG! !!!
Go to MDCN website to check the no. of registered doctors in Nigeria A pitiful 30 000, including the sacked 16000 residents, consultants and medical officers.
There is NO pool to draw from.
Moreover, residency is a specialist training you undergo after passing some exams and you cannot just replace residents-in-training with other doctors
