Question:
In light of your explanation above, how had the patients been faring over the course of the industrial action?

Private hospitals of course, which are far more expensive than the government managed centers of same standard

adeblow: Story, government should employ new ones if they are really serious.

It seems that you have not red Hippocratic oat ' my colleagues are my brothers and sisters'. So no doctor will accept Locum job and MDCAN will not resume work. If I am faithful to this oat, may I enjoy endless life. But if I swear falsely( ie start work when my brothers and sisters were suspended), may damnation be my lot in this life and hereafter. So watch the drama while it unfolds in coming weeks but I promise a happy ending. Federal government and all those who wish doctors ill will be disappointed by the unity among younger generation of Nigerian doctors bound by oat.

anytexy: Doctors are not suppose to go on strike no matter what. Because they are under essential duty just like Army, police, fire fighters etc. These professions their duty is to protect life also. Let it be documented that doctor should never go on strike I beg.
Doctors go on strike in more developed parts of d world( US,UK, isreal etc) not mention 3rd world countries.

WRONG! !!!
Go to MDCN website to check the no. of registered doctors in Nigeria A pitiful 30 000, including the sacked 16000 residents, consultants and medical officers.
There is NO pool to draw from.
Moreover, residency is a specialist training you undergo after passing some exams and you cannot just replace residents-in-training with other doctors
You mean FG is the sole employer of more than half of Nigerian doctors?
I think they should be grateful to FG.
Unemployment know no boundary. A private hospital in ma area just closed down due to lack of patronage.

Lightening:

Most doctors are interested in doing residency. You do not realise that teaching hospitals organize a stringent recruitment exercise for their resident doctors. Some doctors eventually are unable to get a slot. This is their chance.
most doctors may be willing like you said but then the slot thing is actually true- i tried for over 4 years to get placement but i don't know any 'powerful' man who can press the right buttons-the thing has gone beyond merit. This may be the right time to get in but then with all these hostilities among different unions i don't think i have the stomach for such things at my age, besides the residency training is nothing to write home about i have colleagues who are almost consultants just waiting to write part 2 fellowship and they complain bitterly about the state of things in the teaching hospitals. A colleague of mine was to have surgery to correct a limb deformity some months ago and had to wait for several weeks because of things like no light-no fuel , tomorrow its no water so theater is closed... its that bad... i just hope things will not continue like this.

The best solution is to privatize the health sector to check the excesses of these quack doctors.
the doctors will not really have problem with this and that is what people don 't know.

You are sacking doctors when there are not even enough doctors?
Is this government run by sane people at all?
Well, they don't care, because they don't use the hospitals in Nigeria.
That is why they have neglected both the hospitals and medical personnel and prefer to spend billions of naira on foreign medical trips overseas.
Now the masses who need the doctors in Nigeria are deprived of them.
How evil can the government be?
Nigerians would have been better and safer without the ruling party.
Imagine a Nigeria without the nightmares brought by the PDP.

Sometimes you wonder whether the ruling party has conscience and shame.

Oh no....you wouldn't want that. grin

Privatizing the health sector will make doctors like me very happy....because we are going to get paid hefty salaries.

It is ordinary Nigerians like you that will suffer in the form of increased fees.....and increased health care costs. Especially for chronic illnesses like stroke, diabetes, even serious injury that requires long hospital stay.

(And even with a Health insurance scheme.....you will soon find out that your insurer won't pay for certain diseases. As one family friend found out with NHIS when his daughter came down with a serious illness.).

As if they pay u guys more in private practice. If pp is good, why do u guys clamor for jobs in govt owned hospitals? Can u ask the owner of a private hospital for d useless allowance u guys are asking the govt?
Mind you, peeps are already patronizing private hospitals and missionary hospitals because of ur useless attitudes towards patient in govt owned hospitals.
Since d stupid and irrational doctors went on strike, haven't sick people been paying their bills in private hospitals?

Leopantro: there are only 27,000 medical doctors in Nigeria. you sack 16,000. you have less than 300 doctors in military, Navy and air force combined. nobody wants to come to Nigeria right now due to Ebola. where well you get replacement from?

But nothing has changed. Doctors are presently on strike inspite of the outbreak of ebola and are not currently helping with the management of the epidemic. So with or without replacement, nothing will change.

Well....govt jobs are permanent....although that is changing with the increase in the number of private hospitals.

What you are calling for though....is privatizing all the govt hospitals...including teaching hospitals....leaving them free to raise fees....and to rake in more money than they get from government....while you people groan under the costs.

It's the same with universities....privatizing our universities could see you paying tuition fees as high as N1.6Million.

Let me explain further.

A Senior registrar in surgery, for instance, can perform very advanced types of surgery. For example....as a medical student I worked under a Senior registrar who was doing delicate surgery for congenital intestine problems(the gent is now a consultant surgeon). Let's say I was to replace him. Now I know some surgical skills....but I hardly have the knowledge base to do such type of surgery. (And anyways....I want to become an internist! wink).

A senior registrar knows a lot more than a junior registrar , or even a medical officer/senior house officer,...or house officer (that's the pecking order amongst us docs.). Asking a medical officer to replace a senior reg is the same as asking a primary one school teacher to teach Advanced Calculus 502 to a group of postgraduate Maths students at university.

....and where does the Senior Registrar fall in this pecking order?.

Reminds me of a lady who called me sometime back at about 3am while I was sleeping complaining of abdominal pain and severe diarrhea. Funniest thing was that she was even residing in a far away state from where I was. I had to start prescribing drugs at that hour of the night FOC.Only God knows where she got the medication that night. She might even be one of these NLs castigating doctors here grin

Smartsyn: pardon my ignorance, please who is a resident doctor..

What qualifies one to be one.?

And what's so important about them..

student doctors

Re: NMA Dares Jonathan - Asks Resident Doctors To Reject Sack Letters by Nobody: 8:13pm On Aug 15, 2014
Emulti:

student doctors

I would qualify that a bit....a resident doctor is a doctor who has chosen to become a specialist....and who basically becomes a working apprentice to a specialist for six years (ideally!)..at the end of which, after writing the required exams...and doing a research project...is then qualified as a Specialist doctor.

Much of the residency period is spent working....you may attend some lectures...but you do most of your learning at the bedside.
(And even after becoming a consultant....the learning never stops! Medicine is not static. Twenty years ago...Chloroquine was the standard drug for malaria treatment. Now it is Artemisinin Combination Therapy. Even the basic drugs used for HIV are not the same as they were fifteen years ago.).

I have been following this development with keen interest. As much as I am not a Jonathan person, I am fully supportive of his actions. Its not like we have Medical doctors in Nigeria since the strike action commenced. The doctors intentionally drag themselves in the mud and now the FG will cut them to sizes. This will end badly for the doctors, mark it.

dalhat14: So the NMA goes on strike and the government sacks resident doctors, why not sack all the NMA members since residents are only a section of the NMA, and what makes the government think NMA would call off its strike after sacking some of her members. All doctors in Nigeria are members of the NMA so who would restore the services in the hospitals as the government is demanding.
Senseless government
resident doctors are not permanent employees, so they can't dictate to their sponsors how they are treated. MO and consultants are permanent staff. got it?

Someone has spent time trying to explain what residency program is.

Please do well to read it and then you will realise how futile the step taken by the FG is.
