Luxury = lexus Rx300
Reliability = kia rio
Cheap maintenance = kia rio
Image = Lexus Rx300
Ability = Lexus Rx300
Piece of mind = kia rio
Good value for money = kia rio
Long term commitment = kia rio
Durability = Lexus
Standby you in hard times = kia rio
Robber magnet = Lexus

If the Roads in your area are bad but not too bad with big potholes and uneven road surface go for the kia rio its maintenance will assist you to recuperate after making such an expensive purchase, it is not a babe or chick magnet but people will respect you for buying a tear rubber motor.

But if you want to spend that 2.xmillion naira on a car there are other better and reliable Suv with good milage and unoutdated model year

I have had enough laugh here and after all i have to say something. @op, Lexus RX 300 is a better choice irrespective of the manufactured date as long as it's clean with low mileage. kia rio is a fabricated piece of technology. Lexus gives you comfort and exposure to real auto-technology while kia will only make you a car owner.

We need to understand what appeals to a driver before jumping into conclusion. The op's comparison is as a result of what he can afford. If affordability is the concern, then, he should go for the kia. But it is almost a sacrilege to compare a Lexus to a kia. They are not in the same league whether it's a used Lexus or not. Even a stripped down Lexus RX of 11 years will beat a brand new Kia Rio. That Kia Rio is mearnt for starters and women who have no prior driving experience. I drove a Kia Soul from Abuja to Lagos, I could not go above 120km/h. When ever another vehicle overtook me, the car shakes as though I would veer off the lane. You have to manually adjust the side mirrors. It was a crap. For free, I would not take it. The Kia is a coffin on wheels.

Most people who use Kia in Abuja here cause obstructions on the road, some are learners and others are women. There is nothing attracting about a Kia. The interiors are bland. Most lack basic safety equipment. If Nigeria has quality assurance/standards, they would not be sold in Nigeria.

Now back to what I said about what appeals to a user in a car. A person who has driven other cars would find it boring to drive a Kia rio. It offers no fun, enjoyment or comfort to the driver.

After a year of usage, the brand new Kia rio would be worthless. My neighbour upstairs who uses a Kia Sportage wanted to sell his after 7 months of usage, with the warranty still intact, the offers he got were ridiculously poor that he was forced to continue to use it. The sound of that vehicle right now could be compared to the sound of a 911.

But in comparison to the Lexus rx, the Kia rio would be cheaper to keep depending on the terrain of use, frequency of travel and maintenance habits. Agreed, new car offers the owner some peace of mind but not a Dana Kia in Nigeria.

Rearrange It and give reasons why, are you saying a lexus Rx300 in the year 2014 will be more reliable, pocket friendly and cheap maintenance cost than a brand new 2014 kia Rio, I am open to unbiased argument note I have tons of people who bought brand new cars including hyundai, kia, ford etc. Oya let's debate

grin don't mind those people who think Dana motors give genuine warranties. Those indians, koreans, chinese and lebanese are insincere. Imagine sometime ago before the Tsunami Nairaland which wiped off lots of data, a fella got a front end damage in his Kia (either a cerato or rio model) and dana motors gave a huge bill of approx 1.X million Naira. Surprisingly, that car wasn't up to 2 years it got me wondering where is the much talked about warranty. Siena had to detail on items to fix/replace and the owner said he's going off to an independent garage to fix his kia.

Am trying to make a buy decision. My office recently offered us loans to purchase any brand new kia brand, all 2014 version and my pay grade is for the latest Rio, which on the price list goes for about 2.4m
However, am on the outlook for a reliable car that will last long and am thinking a Lexus 300 2003 model Tokunbo which goes for far cheaper. Guys will this be a smart move?

Take the Rio.

I don't particularly like the Kia as an autoist, and I will NEVER buy one, but this makes more financial sense for yo based on what you wrote.

Now, Nurey, why do you think RX is the best selling luxury crossover in N. America?

Because of its reliability and we all know the track record of toyota, its rarely undisputed.
But lomomike this is comparing a 10yrs old car plus to a few month old car. The engine of the lexus is v6 sir with all things been equal I.e buying only fuel, the rio will still be cheap and affordable to the pocket.

Look all this luxury we are talking about let me tell you this Nigerians just buy things they don't need, they won't use, they don't even know how to use.

I won't advice any one to use the reverse camera in nigeria except you are ready to kill some or damage your car, how many people will watch DvD in their car I see those prados with head dvd, they have never been switched on.

Lexus is luxurious and makes a statement every where it goes but he shouldn't buy what has luxurious gadgets for the fun of it when he won't use it.
I won't advice the op to buy that Rx300 but he can buy something of recent like the 4runner or highlander or even other car manufacturer models.

I always find it funny how some people defend RX300 as if it was handed down by God himself from the heavens.

Any car can be a lemon, when you're buying a used car you need to make sure that it as previously well taken care of.

The sticker price doesn't match up to the reliability. I'm the only driver, car kept in garage. Both front leather seats and around the handle on the driver's side had to be repaired. Icon for lights keep coming on. Heating and AC have been on and off which has turned me very off. I bought it brand new to go into retirement!"

9 years old, 130K. Repairs to date: 2 O2 Sensors, 4 brake rotors (original fronts rotted), transmission fluid line behind radiator rotted and leaked (common problem says Lexus parts guy), electrical failure of hi beam headlights, drivers leather seat cracked/didn't wear well, needed replacement. Engine of this year reported to have sludge problem that could cause failure due to inadequate lubrication, but it has run very well for me to date. AC lost charge last week; diagnosis pending. AWD great in snow, exceptional with snow tires. Not a bad vehicle, but I had higher expectations of reliability."

love the car, i bought it w/27,000 mies, it's at 90,000 now, i put gas w/the car running a yr ago and it caused problems w/a sensor that cost 900.00 to fix. other than that no problems except having to rep[lace the left ftont and back tail light. toyota is a rip off, wanted to charge 45.00 just to tell me it's my bulbs and nothing else is wrong, only the tail light warning light was on. it looks pretty easy to change both . my son is going to change it, and it will cost less than 20.00."

I had purchased the 2000 RX300 model and only at 65K miles started giving me more issues compared to any other cars that i have driven. Never had any issues on my other cars for at least 98K miles. But this was a big headache for me one problem after the other. 1st of all never in my life will i purchase a Toyota Branded upscaled car like Lexus nor any Toyota branded vehicles. At 65k - Rear Main Seal Leak At 69K - O2 Sensors Bad AT 73K - Knock Sensor Bad At 86K - Water leak from windshield At 96K - Charcal Canister bad At 98K - Check oil light. Toyota did deploy inferior quality parts on this vehicle since it was a 1st Gen Car and most of the parts came from either made for Camry or Avalon in the same year. Other than interior nothing is facny in these cars, except a upper scalled version of a Highlander. If they had used good components and had a Quality control on the vehicles they make, we would not see so many recalls in these past 2 years right from Toyota to Lexus."

My RX300 2002 Lexus has a wonderful ride and looks great even after 11 years. Well, that is where it all stops. I have spent more on this vehicle than any other car in my 53 years of driving. The transmission has been replaced, the motor on the antennae died, the front headlights go out frequently and sometimes the cruise control just stops when going up a hill. I'm taking it in next week to prepare for putting out more money."

I had 2 Lexus RX300. Bought the first one in 1998. It caught fire in 2000, as I was driving to work (10-mile leisurely drive). Total loss. It had about 15,000 miles. Horrible experience with Lexus as we sorted through that. They eventually gave me a slightly used RX300 demo car which I still have. It has 111,000 miles. Muffler gave up at 70,000; the radio at about 80,000; transmission at 100,000. The hatchback is nearly jammed and very difficult to open. Was told it cannot be lubricated, only replaced. Very disenchanted with Lexus. Mine have been lemons, poorly designed, with overly complicated engineering for very simple parts such as a door closure system. Never had such problems with my other cars (Toyota, Honda, BMW, Mazda), except for a Fiat I owned long ago. Not a flattering comparison, but appropriate when it comes to quality."

I've never owned a Lexus (though I'm looking at an LS400 - on my bucket list - test drove a first year model with twin TRD turbos - o dear god) so I have no personal experience - (my little wench admirer I hope you're continuing to track my car ownerships grin ).

No one has bothered to find out if Op is a car person before suggesting he go for a used car rather than a brand new car. Because only a car person would leave a new car he could afford to go for a 3rd or 5th hand car. Some of us don't even know some of these so called tokunbo cars we brag about were 5th hand before they entered Nigeria, before we became 6th hand owner.

Op, if what you care most about in a car is what can take you from this point to another point, with AC chilling with less fuel consumption, then what are you looking for in a used car since you can comfortably afford a new one? If you don't want to turn to a mechanic like me less than 2 years of owning a car, then why considering a used car in the first place? If the nature of your job or what you do requires charming clients or impressing them to give you jobs, or seeking for contracts, what yours business with 4th hand car?

Let me tell you, a car person look for something in a car, something not everyone looks for. And if he finds it in an old car, he would jump at it, not minding what the world says about it. And most importantly, he is ready to pay the price for going for that old car, as long as he enjoys what he sees in the car alone, whenever he sits behind the wheel. The price is repair cost. Late Paul Walker bought a used car that cost about 500k USD, a 2005 model Porsche with over 600 hp, mated to manual tranny. He could afford a brand new car that cost lower, but he went for it, because he was a car person and there is nothing anyone could do about it, "He was Paul Walker" not you or myself. The car before his death developed steering issue, which after repairing it, was taken for a drive and the rest happened that ended his life. My point is, no matter how clean a used car is, its a used car, which owner must pay the price doing more repairs than new one. I drive a 1986 Lion. I knew i was going to be spending more keeping her on the road than newer Lions, but I didn't care, because I knew what I want from it which others don't see. So, I was willing to pay the price, which I still do, but I am not complaining, because its what I want for who Iam with cars.

Some have had to replace their transmissions the same months they bought tokunbos. The dealer was not living inside the autobox to know the state before he sold it to you. Some of these tokunbo self, we read how peoples transmissions failed while under warranty. Some engines and transmissions failed few months or years after warranty. They repair or replaced them, before selling to 2nd owner, 3rd owner, before it get to us the 4th or 5th owners. So if you are buying a used car, always have at the back of your mind that anything can happen and you may end up spending more than 100k to get her back on the road. The other day in this car talk, someone opened a thread on how he lost his engine on one month old tokunbo Lexus, I think. Go and ask him how much he spent in replacing that engine. Funny thing was, the way he threw the question. That is, "How could the engine fail?" Probably, he couldn't believe a Toyota engine could fail. Things happen, that just it.

Op, take some minutes off the line and isolate yourself. Think deeply what you really want or purpose you need a car for, not what we think you need a car for. Also think of how you want to spend and save for the next 4-5 years after buying the car; which of these two cars will increase your cash flow or raise your status, directly or indirectly; would you mind what people would say about your car or so what?; etc. By the time you come out of the sober reflection, you would know the car you need. It's a decision you alone has to take.

My reason for driving what I drive does not matter. What matters is your reason for considering buying yours.

Good luck!

@op buy d Rio And av peace of mind for d nxt 4yrs or more. A close friend of mine went as far as Togo 2 yrs ago to buy 2003 RX300 wt a clean title. Not up to one year he started running from pillar to post trying to fix one fault or d other. Most times now he would leave d car at home n take a bike to where ever he is going around town because he is scared it might develop a fault. There is nothing like driving a brand new car. My opinion anyway, d choice is urs to make.

Op,

I forgot to add, if you really want to study and understand cars or have some basic knowledge about cars, then stay away from New car for now and start with used one. Because you must be forced to learn it with used car, unless you want to keep having nightmares opening your bonnet for some circus performers.

Or if you want to use part of the money to do some business that will generate more cash flow for you, then the used car may serve that purpose. But pray you will be lucky not to spend that saved money in fixing unexpected wahala prone to used cars. But then, there is nothing wrong in taking that risk, because you can't grow without taking risks.

Being new doesn't mean its immune from ish and that the dealership can cut your throat with crazy pricetag for repair.

Driving a used car doesn't mean one is too broke to do new. Its preference, what tickles my fantasy.

Me and my family would go the way of certified used car if I find anything that gives us what we desire but then, this topic is just like a debate for and against.

Whatsoever I've said, is my personal opinion and some experience and some other research.

Op with your budget of 2m to 2.5m you can get something better and more recent that can out perform the Rx series
2005 to 2007 nissan pathfinder or exterra
2003 to 2007 honda
Honda crv 2003 model upwards

If you want a solid Korean car with good build quality and all the luxurious what not and what is in the Rx try the Hyundai sonata or kia optima American specs with navigation and plush leather seat in fact with your budget you can get tons of good quality cars from different manufacturers.

If you get the kia rio you can pass it on to a relative after it has served you and you are willing to upgrade

I will pick a 2014 kia rio..

The cost of a 2012 range will buy @ least 4 brand new kia rio..

So for the next 5 years I won't bother my life with car issues...

The expenses on a used range rover for the next 5 years will run into millions of naira, which can be invested into something productive.

By 5 years time, if I still want a range rover, I can buy a new one. And use it until it starts questioning my peace of mind.

But am certain if I get d RANGE Rover NEW, it will serve me forever..

I love luxury, proud and gadgets stuffed rides, but I can't afford to spend on a known liability during my years of use.

NEW and USED don't mean the same...

Peace of mind is all I crave for.. No car will kill me

If it can serve you forever, the 2012 Range is less than 3years (faultless), has better features, better advantage etc
