The best RPM to roll up with when you're fuel economy conscious is of course the lowest possible RPM attainable for a particular speed.

Ie. If the lowest RPM I can maintain while doing 100km/hr is 2000RPM, that then is okay for me because I'm light on the pedal.

But if I don't care about fuel economy, pollution and other things, and the highest RPM I can attain is 3000RPM @ 100km/hr, then that's okay for me because I am more heavy on the pedal.

You should cruise at 2.5 to 3k
100km/hr @3000rpm in 6th freeway cruising
anything under 2k and your car doesn't like it
good point is 3000 rpm is where it really starts to pull hard so you, hardly ever have to drop a gear to overtake.

Bro, it depends mostly on your gear ratios. For cars tuned for economy/or highway cruising, the gear ratios are tuned in a way that gives higher gear at lower revs hence lower RPMs. For cars tuned with performance bias, the gear ratios are short gear changes and allow for higher revs hence, higher RPMs.

I know I use mostly cars tuned for economy and steady highway cruising, so my revs are kept low. Imagine 2000-2500RPM @ 100km/hr, that's what occurs when I push my pedal lightly to moderately.

The only time my cars do high RPMs are when I start from stop or I wish to quickly get to a particular speed.

you dont need teaching on that one drive your car in any gear and 600 revs and come back and tell us if the engine sound right at those revs

My car tachometer shows green light wen I am driving economically usually nt above 2500rpm n orange light wen I am drivin uneconomically mostly above 2500rpm wen I push gas pedal hard for quick acceleration. So it depends on ur interest

Engine size and gear ratios matter a lot, with my peugeot v6 (manual)back then 100km/h was about 2rpm but with my present 406 E10 I4 2.0liter 100km/h is at 3rpm, same with my rio 07.

my car hits 5000 rpm to engage second gear, sometimes 6000 at normal pedal pressure.... think my gear is giving up

Wow,how does your engine sound when changing gears? The highest I've ever reached is 3000rpm at 140km/hr.

..............stressing out. lol
i always make sure it doesnt get above 4k rpm wen changing to any gear.
i hit constant 3200rpm at 140kmph, hitting 5400rpm at 180kmph.

Well, even tho I typed in pidgin engRISH, I expected a good answer. However, I don't do keke napep. Good luck with your Piaggio ape.

This question will apply more to vehicles with manual gearboxes. Automatic transmission will up shift or downshift according to the shift programme, engine rpm vs load. And according to the driver's style of driving, if the TCU has a "learn" capability.

There is no correct answer to a question like this. What should be asked here, is what user's vehicles RPM are at 30mph (city in 4th) 50 mph (motorway in 5th/6th) 70mph (motorway in 5th/6th).

Here are some benchmarks:

The average sport hatchback will be doing 60mph @ 3,000rpm in 5th/6th.
The average medium family sedan will be doing 65mph @ 3,000rpm in 5th/6th.
The average large family sedan will be doing 72mph @ 3,000rpm in 5th/6th.
The average full-size luxury sedan will be doing 84mph @ 3,000rpm in 4th/5th/6th (automatic).

I cruise at 2,650rpm in my Audi A8 4.2 Quattro, 6 speed Tiptronic. This gives me 76mph. This will be different if I was driving a Volkswagen Golf IV 1.8T. 2,650rpm will not suit the engine's power and torque curve. A big V8 will pull hard at 2,000rpm in 5th, a 2.0 16V will be jerky at the same.

The values will also be very different if the engines were diesel. Diesel-powered vehicles develop tremendous torque at low rpm. The rev range is also limited, with a narrow power band (turbo diesels). The gear ratios are revised to make the best of all the above, much higher than that of a comparable gasoline engine. So 70mph could be achieved at a relatively low 1,500-1,750rpm in 5th/6th). Which is what makes a diesel-powered engine much more efficient than a similar capacity gasoline one.

These values are all based upon standard vehicles, with factory-issue wheel and tyre sizes.

So in answer to this thread, it will depend on what you're driving.

Yeah! Correct guy! I love to be heavily footed too; damn fuel economy.

For FWD's, you normally would have a lower RPM than RWD or AWD

Below is my nissan murano SL CVT @77MPH at ~ 2000 RPM with 92 AKI on a level surface.

Other cars I have driven
11 Lexus IS 350 SC V6 3.5 RWD 6S AT ~2700RPM @ 75 MPH

08 Tundra 5.7 V8 i force RWD 5S AT~ 27000 RPM @ 75 MPH

12 Infiniti M37 sport 3.7 V6 RWD 7S AT ~ 2850 RPM @ 80 MPH

In my opinion, at final gear 1900 to 2200 RPM seems good for FWD and 2500 to 27000 RPM for RWD (@75MPH). Never really looked at a AWD.

If you really understand gas engines and the relationship between torque, RPM and HP you would understand why continuous towing with FWD is not advised.

In Benz, the bigger the engine the lower rev it pulls at high mph/kmh.

For instance, a 2.3 litre engine of my benz 190 will change gear at normal driving at about 2000rpm . If pull so hard , it changes at about 3000rpm. Whereas my c class, c180 esprit with 1.8 litre engine, though manual tranny, will change gear normally at about 2500 to 3000rpm, if pull so hard it could even approach 4000 to 4500rpm i.e for the lower gears, but at much more lower rpm for the higher gears like 3 especially 4 & 5

If you are conscious of economy, you get that done at the lowest rpm achievable, but if are not conscious of gas, you pedal down the dame thing as it goes, "no shelle"
