Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has stated that oil-producing states should be paid 13 per cent derivation of the $1 billion withdrawn from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) by the Federal Government to fight insurgency. Speaking on Sunday at the Government House Port Harcourt during the presentation of the Leadership Newspaper Governor of the Year Award 2017 to him by the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, who represented him at the event, Governor Wike noted that it is mandatory for the constitutional procedure to be followed. The governor said that he has been officially approached to lobby the Rivers State House of Assembly to approve the resolution mandating the withdrawal of the said funds. He said while the State Government is not against the fight against insurgency, all required constitutional procedures must be respected. “They have approached us to lobby for the passage of a resolution by the State House of Assembly approving the $1 billion withdrawn from the Excess Crude Account to fight insurgency. “The law is clear. Every proceed from oil, you must remove 13 per cent derivation for oil producing states. We cannot be stampeded into doing the wrong thing. So, where is the 13 per cent derivation for oil producing states. In fighting insurgency, you must respect the law,” Wike said. He further stated that all the negative actions against the Rivers State Government are targeted at denying the State the balance of the Paris Club Refund. Governor Wike also informed the Rivers State House of Assembly members of the refusal of the APC Federal Government to release budget support fund to the State Government, when all other states have received the fund. “If you criticise the government, they deny the State funds due to it. This is a government that claims that it is fighting corruption,” he said. He commended the Rivers State House of Assembly for their support, urging them to stand firm as the state approaches the political era. The governor said that the numerous successes recorded by the state are due to the sacrifices of the people in the face of dwindling resources. Earlier, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani described the Rivers State Governor as a leader with outstanding developmental qualities. He said the imprints of the governor are found in all the local government areas of the state. He noted that the Leadership Newspaper Governor of the Year Award 2017 is a crown of all previous awards that Governor Wike has received. The speaker was accompanied by the leadership and members of the House to make the presentation to Governor Wike. The speaker represented Governor Wike at the Leadership Newspaper awards in Abuja. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/1bn-eca-withdrawal-wike-charges-fg-to.html

Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Kalu Uche, has declared that Nigerian leaders have failed. Uche lamented the state of the nation, noting that the citizens were yet to enjoy adequate dividends of democracy. He spoke on Sunday in Abuja while delivering a sermon at the 2018 Interdenominational Church service titled: “I See Hope” as part of activities marking this year’s Democracy Day celebration, held at the National Christian Centre. He, however, urged Christians to vote against religious bigots, tribalists and looters in 2019. Uche, who said he alone can mobilize two million Methodist faithfuls, said he was already talking to the Pentecostals, Catholics and other Christian faithful ahead of the 2019 election. His words: “Even though it is said that the worst of democracy is better than the best form of dictatorship, under democracy, our leaders have failed, toying with the nation’s democracy. Our people cannot even organize simple party primaries, what a shame. “Peace can only come through servant leadership style, tolerance and fairness, from leaders who know that though tribes and tongues may differ, in brotherhood we stand. You know that there is no security in this country, there is so much bitterness, how can the economy thrive?” The cleric urged the Federal Government to review the bogus salaries and allowances of those in authority downward, saying they cannot continue to be enjoying while the masses suffer. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/our-leaders-have-failed-ccant-oorganize.html

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have said that they would unveil their plans to rescue Nigeria at a public event next month. Obasanjo had led prominent members of his political movement, Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM), including former governors, Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Lagos and Osun states), and Donald Duke (Cross River State), to address a press conference in Abuja last week, saying that they had collapsed their structures into ADC. The National Chairman of ADC, Okey Nwosu, who spoke in a telephone interview with THISDAY yesterday, said the party was adopting a three-pronged approach of merger, alliance, and fusion with like-minded political parties and organisations to ensure that it secures victory at the 2019 polls. He said ADC was pursuing another alliance with about 30 other registered political parties operating under the auspices of the Coalition for a New Nigeria (CNN). Nwosu said, “We have started the reorganisation of the party, and by June, we are going to address the nation on the way forward and the promise ADC has for Nigerians. “By June, we are going to address the nation on the way forward and what ADC has in stock for Nigeria and Africa.” He said CNM had fully integrated into the structures of ADC and that both were now one entity. According to him, “We are just working on a document to create a continental brand from the ADC, a model political party like no one before.” On what would be the fate of the present leadership of ADC since the entrants would be interested in playing key leadership roles, Nwosu said he would not mind giving a chance for a party structure to emerge if that would help the party succeed in its mission to rescue the country from its present bad situation. He said, “Our party had its last national convention in 2015 and at that time, we said the founding national executives could continue in their offices until such a time that the party will start to take a real life. With this fusion we are undergoing now and the membership we have, I feel we are taking a new life. So any moment from now we are going to fix our convention. “The most important thing for people like me is that I have founded a party that eminent Nigerians approve as a proper vehicle to address the inadequacies that brought about the political situation in our country. “So I am fulfilled and I am like a missionary on a mission of nation-building. Position doesn’t matter to me and most members of the party. My preoccupation from now on is how to move this party to the Villa and state government houses in Nigeria.” On whether more political bigwigs are expected to toe the line of Obasanjo to join the ADC, Nwosu said though the party had a good number of top politicians, both serving and former government functionaries that had shown readiness to join ADC, the emphasis of the new movement was the grassroots. Equally reacting to speculations that many governors and legislators were eager to join forces with ADC, Nwosu said, “Those are strategic matters, they would unfold at the appropriate time. We are planning and I think what makes us different is that we have sent letters to governors, senators, members of the House of Representatives, and if they can adapt to ADC ways, we will receive them “We are a grassroots party and that is where our strength lies. We have always had a challenge of not having enough resources to show what we are capable of doing. Even in some places where we have won elections, the people in government tend to take the powerful influence of state structures to take the victories away. But I think with the influx of influential personalities that situation will end. “The biggest assets of the party are the young people and women, not the kind big men Nigerians were used to. Almost everybody in Nigeria is not happy with the way the country is going. And if Obasanjo, Babangida, Danjuma, the bishops, and the religious leaders, both Christian and Moslem, have said that enough is enough, and have come to identify with a party that can properly package the polity and address issues of nation-building, we must be taken seriously.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/obasanjo-adc-30-other-parties-in.html

The lawmaker representing Ese-Odo constituency at the Ondo State House of Assembly, Hon Vincent Obadiah has petitioned the Inspector General of Police and Ondo State Commissioner of Police over Police invasion of Arogbo community in Ese-Odo local government and destruction of properties at the residence of former Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Niger Delta Affairs, Hon Kingsley Kuku, on Thursday. Obadiah in his petition where he condemned the invasion in strong terms, said "from reports and information reliably gathered from my constituents, the police men numbering over 20 invaded Arogbo community in a commando style shooting sporadically to scare residents and create panic in the mind of the people. "They didn't stop at that, after throwing cautions into the thin air, I was informed that while the sporadic gun shots went on, the police invaded the residence of our illustrious son, Hon Kingsley Kuku, they forcefully broke into his house without any warrant and vandalized valuable properties." The lawmaker further stated that "since this unfortunate incident happened on Thursday, the people of peaceful Arogbo now live in fear and panic unsure of what next would befall the hitherto peaceful community. "This action is totally condemnable and a desperate act by the Police to throw peaceful Arogbo community into a war zone and place it under siege, which will be resisted by every legal means. "I call on the Inspector General of Police and the Ondo State Police Commissioner to urgently look into this matter and bring all perpetrators to book. If action is not taken, the people of Arogbo community will not hesitate to explore every legal means to seek justice to prevent any action that could throw our community into turmoil or place it under police siege," Obadiah added. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/lawmaker-petitions-igp-police.html

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Thursday described as a sign of irresponsibility, the failure of the Federal government to tame the spate of killings across the country. The union maintained that “a government that allows her people to be murdered daily is totally irresponsible” and has failed to fulfil the social contract of protecting lives and properties. ASUU Chairman, University of Ibadan chapter, Dr. Deji Omole in an interview with journalists after the union’ congress demanded adequate security of lives and properties of Nigerians from the government of President Muhammadu Buhari. Omolealso called for the de-politicization of security by heads of security agencies, saying loyalty must be to Nigeria and not to Aso Rock residents. He noted that Nigerians who were already battling with poor economic conditions were now afraid that their lives could be terminated anyhow, adding that the Buhari led federal government had been issuing ineffective condemnation speeches. According to him, “it is a sign of irresponsibility for the government to fold its arms, while people are being killed only to approve N10 billion for rebuilding affected communities, a serious government would have prevented destruction from happening but the government allowed the carnage to happen”. Omole noted that while land transportation was hellish for Nigerians, it was now more deadly to travel since criminals had positioned themselves on major roads kidnapping, raping, dispossessing and killing people at will. He said food production was now threatened because communities affected were farming communities, while those displayed were farmers. Omole said “Every day you open newspaper and what you read is news of killing and some people will seat inside Air conditioner offices in Abuja and issue a condemnation speeches which have not done anything in the last three years since they came to power. “If Nigerians are already denied quality health facilities, quality education, quality social services, they must not be denied right to life. “This is the worst form of treating the governed by a government which promised hope to the masses but which the rich have continued to benefit from. We demand security of lives and properties from the Muhammadu Buhari government. Only the living can demand for their rights. “It is sad that one state claimed to have lost about 500 persons to herdsmen terrorism and nobody has been prosecuted for this.” https://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/killings-you-have-displayed-incapacity.html
