History was made in Enugu State on Saturday, as all the traditional rulers of the 450 autonomous communities in the state unanimously endorsed Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for a second term in office. The Royal Fathers, who converged on the popular Michael Okpara square, Enugu for what they described as a “mega apolitical grand rally” said their decision was in adherence to the stance of “all our brothers, sisters, sons and daughters in various walks of life” on the performance assessment and endorsement of the governor’s re-election in 2019. The Monarchs added that they were delighted that without a dissenting voice each individual and group, “especially the religious and members of the ecclesiastical orders; the elders; the political class; the professionals; the academic; the self-employed; the pensioners; the working class; the traders; artisans and the youth” extolled Gov. Ugwuanyi’s exceptional moral virtues and superlative performance in the discharge of his duties as governor. They disclosed that “all groups of people in Enugu State across political divide have separately approved the performance of Governor Ugwuanyi and have declared him their candidate for the 2019 gubernatorial election”, saying: “This is why we called this mega apolitical grand rally to declare before Nigeria and the world that we stand head and shoulder with our people”. According to the Royal Fathers, “because of our subjects’ wishes, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is our candidate in which ever political party he chooses to contest”. Describing Gov. Ugwuanyi as the “most accessible, humble, unassuming, respectful and friendly” governor, the monarchs added that he has supported and enhanced their status; incorporated them into the administrative structure of governance “and empowered us to be agents of development of our respective communities”, saying: “You have celebrated all joyous occasions for us and with us”. At the colourful and well-attended event, which was also graced by leaders in the state, such as the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu and other members of the National Assembly; the Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi and his colleagues; State Chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Hon. Augustine Nnamani and Chief Alex Ogbonna; members of the State Executive Council; Council Chairmen, among others, the traditional rulers for the first time in the history of the state collectively conferred on Gov. Ugwuanyi a chieftaincy title of “Omeluoha Gburugburu of Enugu State” as a demonstration of their love and affection for him. The Royal Fathers equally honoured the governor with a collective presentation of “Ofo” as “the time-honoured symbol of protection, dignity, authority, power and moral rectitude in Igboland”, declaring: “With it no harm will ever come your way and there will never be a limit to your rising star. It shall be well with you as each Royal Father supplicates for you in his own faith and religion. Amen”. Responding, Gov. Ugwuanyi, who expressed gratitude to the Royal Fathers for “this singular privilege” and the support and cooperation they have been according his administration since inception, noted that he has always treated the traditional institution with a difference and honour “as a custodian of our culture and the traditional head of our various communities”. According to the governor, “it is certainly unique for traditional rulers of a state to come together to pray and confer a chieftaincy title on a sitting governor and also unanimously endorse him for a second tenure in office”. The governor also appreciated the contributions of the traditional rulers towards the entrenchment of peace and security in their various communities, which he said has “enhanced the state’s reputation as one of the most peaceful and safest states in the country”. While observing a minute silence in honour of the slain traditional ruler in the state, Igwe Stephen Nwatu, Gov. Ugwuanyi regretted the Igwe’s untimely and unfortunate death, and announced that his administration has set up a judicial commission of enquiry to unravel the circumstances surrounding his demise to ensure that the culprits are brought to book and make recommendations that would deter future occurrence of such dastardly act. Other highlights of the event were lively cultural display/parade and presentation of gifts to the governor by the 17 local government areas of the state. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/ugwuanyi-breaks-record-as-enugu-royal.html

The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned the African Development Bank (AFDB) against granting a loan request by the Rauf Aregbesola-led administration. It alleged that the money would be diverted. PDP, in a press statement signed by its State Chairman, Hon. Soji Adagunodo, made available to DAILY POST on Thursday alleged that Governor Aregbesola was deceiving the bank, with a covert intent of diverting the loans for election purpose. According to Adagunodo, the PDP became worried based on the “desperate move “by the APC government to acquire additional loans less than 6 months to the expiration of the administration, and as a result complicate the state’s indebtedness.” The party further knocked Governor Aregbesola for allegedly displaying technical education equipment which were bought by the Oyinlola administration in 2009 as if they were freshly procured. “Those equipment had been locked up by the Aregbesola administration since it aborted the project started by the PDP for the upgrade of our technical colleges but hurriedly brought out in order to deceive the AFDB team and convince them on the need to grant this fresh loan request. “We have no doubt in our minds that what the governor is in a hurry to do is to secure the AFDB loan as fresh billions of Naira which will be squandered on his desperate attempt to install his stooge at the forthcoming governorship election. “We consider it highly expedient to alert the African Development Bank to the present state of insolvency of Osun state occasioned by the financial recklessness of the APC government and as confirmed by several notable credit rating organisations. “We also wish to warn top civil servants, especially those saddled with the Management of state finances to refrain from doing anything that will further compound the woes of Osun state by this expiring administration because they will also be called to account for any malfeasance committed by the APC government especially in its dying days”, Adagunodo said. PDP described the inclusion of the Airport project in the list of projects to be executed with the new loans as very unfortunate, alleging that over N15 billion naira expended on the project could not be accounted for. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/beware-of-aregbesola-pdp-cautions-afdb.html

Suspected Fulani herdsmen have killed a family of four at Antsa village of Kwarra district in Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. Speaking to newsmen Wednesday, an eyewitness, Denen Utsa said that the killings occurred on Tuesday. He said: “As I speak, security operatives have been mobilised to recover the butchered corpses from the farm where the killings took place.” Denen gave names of the slain Tiv family as the father of the family, Utindi Kyor; his son Shie-Aondo; his son’s wife, Dedzugwen and his grand son, Boyi. A Tiv leader in the state, Thomas Gar, also spoke on the incident. He said: “The young man was going to his farm alongside his wife and child when they were intercepted by the suspected Fulani herdsmen. “They collected his man’s phone and forced him to call his father to come so that they will release them. “He called his father to the spot and instead of releasing them, the young man, the wife, the child and the father that came were all killed instantly.” Gas, who is the Nasarawa Mzough U Tiv chairman, lamented that the situation in Nasarawa State was worsening. “The vice president came barely about a month ago and all our expectations were that there will be peace. But unfortunately, there is no peace in our communities. “Up till now, nobody has gone back to the places of their abode; the farming season is fast running out and they are still hanging around in the neighbouring communities. “We have minimum security personnel on the ground and the Tiv people are still stranded in various IDPs camps because they have not gone back to their places of abode,” he stated. He appealed to the federal government to do more in alleviating the sufferings of the Tiv farmers in the state. “The Tiv people in the southern senatorial district of the state are still suffering and are still trapped in the IDPs camps”, Gar added. It was gathered that the incident occurred within hours of another herdsmen attack on Tiv farmers at Gada-Biu village in Obi Local Government Area of the state. One Aondovihi Tuur was killed, another farmer Virlumun Atsaga is missing, while over twenty others sustained various degrees of matchet cuts. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/herdsmen-wipe-out-family-in-nasarawa.html

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, OYC, has described the recent honour on acclaimed winner of June 12 election, late M.K.O Abiola as a step towards appeasing the Yoruba. DAILY POST recalls that Buhari had conferred on the late Abiola a posthumous award and replaced the May 29 with June 12 as Democracy Day. Reacting through a statement signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the President Ohanaeze Youth Council Worldwide and Comrade Obinna Achuonye, the Deputy President, they urged Buhari to also find ways of assuaging the feelings of people of the South-East. The group said in the statement that it has appraised the recent development “especially as its regards to the conferment of GCFC on the Late MKO Abiola and declaration of June 12 as Public holiday. It is a welcome development to appease the Yoruba of South west. “Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide is telling President Buhari to extend such gesture to Ndigbo, by sponsoring an Executive Bill to the National Assembly, for an additional state to the People of Southeast as a way to correct the structural imbalance of Southeast having only 5 states. “Such Executive bill will help to solve some structural issues with regards to making Ndigbo to be at per with other geo-political zones. President Buhari will win the hearts of Igbos if there’s an additional state in the Southeast.” “OYC insists that President Buhari having honoured M.K.O Abiola and co, should extend that gesture to the man who conducted the 1993 Presidential election, Professor Humphrey Nwosu. “We know that President buhari must have forgotten Professor Humphrey Nwosu in the list of those he recently honoured. For Nwosu to have fearlessly conducted such an election adjudged as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria, he should be next in the list after Abiola. “We call on the Federal Government to consider the immediate upgrading of Akanu Ibiam Airport Enugu and acceleration of work in the second Niger bridge,” they further stated. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/mko-abiola-extend-same-gesture-to.html

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state has warned Agatu youths in the state against creating unrest and chaos in the area. He asked them to give peace a chance or face the consequences of their recalcitrant actions. Ortom read the riot act in Makurdi when people of Agatu led by the Och’Agatu and other prominent members of the area, paid him a courtesy visit. He distanced the government from the purported release of N40 billion by World Nations Development Programme, WNDP, to build housing estates for communities ravaged by recent conflicts in the state. The governor described the allegation that he collected the said money as baseless and mere concoction by mischief makers aimed at tarnishing his image. “Neither me nor the Program Coordinator, Dr Noah Adeboh collected any dime from WNDP. They are going to execute the project at no expense of the villagers nor government,” he said. Ortom disclosed that the WNDP would build the 2000 units of two bedrooms for free in Agatu, Guma and Kwande Local Government Areas. Ortom said he was pained that Agatu youths were opposing the construction of the housing estate, demanding for compensation before work could start. “Go back to your community and speak with the youth; as a father of the state I will give them another opportunity to retrace their steps or the project will be moved elsewhere. “The fight over land and fish pond must end and we will not apply the stick approach now, but after this grace period, we will apply the stick. “I want Agatu to be developed and that the reason why I awarded the road from Oshugbudu to Ogbagaji and others is to make the place better and developed,” the governor said. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/gov-ortom-threatens-rioting-agatu.html

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, on Sunday gave a 21-day ultimatum to employers in the Nigerian oil and gas sector to address workers’ welfare or witness a total shutdown. NUPENG president, Williams Akporeha, said at a news conference in Lagos that over 500 union members had not been paid after working for some international oil companies. According to him, the companies did not allow for unionisation, refused collective bargaining negotiation, non-payment of end of contract benefits and practice other anti-labour activities. “This is alien to our extant industrial rules. Some of the workers have died, while others are roaming the streets because they could not get their money. “A prominent oil company which is among the debtors claimed that it cannot locate the contractor who hired the workers to do the job. This is sad,’’ Akporeha said. He urged the oil companies to prevail on such contractors to do the needful as it was criminal and a slap to the government. “It is few months to the expiration of the agreement and Petroleum Tanker Drivers have shown considerable tolerance and endurance in the denial of their rights,’’ he said. Akporeha said that the workers had risked their lives to contribute to development of the economy, especially in the downstream value chain. He said that the union was against multinational companies enslaving the workers and causing them to live in precarious conditions. He said the ultimatum would take effect from tomorrow and urged the affected organisations to resolve contending issues to avoid further action. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/nupeng-threatens-strike-over-unpaid.html

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has raised alarm over alleged plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi to implicate him and some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with murder. The governor alleged that a meeting on the plot was held in Isan-Ekiti, the hometown of Fayemi, the flag bearer of the APC in the July 14, 2018 governorship election. He alleged that a certain thug popularly known as Agbara was assigned with the task of killing people and dumping their corpses in houses belonging to PDP chieftains as well as Fajuyi Park. The governor said; “This alarm has become necessary because of a meeting that was held yesterday, in Isan-Ekiti, the hometown of Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the flag bearer of the APC in the July 14, 2018 governorship election. “They have hired one Agbara to kill one or two indigenes of Ekiti and dump their bodies in the houses of PDP leaders, Fajuyi Park, in Ado Ekiti or near the government house. This is an attempt to link me and my party with killings. “This new plot is as a result of the failure of the plot to link me with the shooting of Hon. Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (MOB) and others by a policeman at the APC secretariat on Friday. “We take exception to this sinister plot as we will not be a party to violence act. Ekiti has been peaceful in the last three and half years, we want to keep enjoying this peace and will not want it disrupted because of politics. Our ambition is not worthy of the blood of any Ekiti indigene. “We therefore call on the police and other security agencies to be vigilant and Ekiti people to please be watchful. Your life and my life will not be used as sacrifice for this election. “I want to plead with everyone to please take note that violence is not an option. I also urge the federal government to take necessary steps to safe Ekiti from further crisis.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/fayemi-apc-set-to-implicate-me-pdp.html

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has reacted to the signing of the ‘Not Too Young To Run’ bill by President Muhammadu Buhari. Fayose said by signing the bill, Buhari should remind himself that he was “Too Old To Run,” hence he should vacate the office of the President for the youths. In a series of tweets, the governor said the country needs to be “totally returned to the youths who own the future of Nigeria.” The tweet reads, “I commend the youths who championed the “Not Too Young To Run” agitation and urge them not to relent because it is not yet uhuru. “We must totally return the country to the youths who own the future of Nigeria. Here in Ekiti, if you are above 40 years, you can’t be LG Councillor. “We must have a Nigeria where anyone who is qualified to vote can also be voted for, not this hypocritical signing of “Not Too Young To Run” Bill by the same President who said our youths are lazy and must not run against him in 2019. “Today in Ekiti, the PDP Deputy governorship candidate is 39 year old. He became chairman of Ado LG at 35. “On the contrary, the APC deputy governorship candidate is 74 year old. He was chairman of Ado LG 25 years ago. “The future of Nigeria belongs to the youths and we must handover the country to them without restrictions. “If at 18, you are old enough to choose, you must also be seen as old enough to be chosen. “Lastly, our President who signed the “Not Too Young To Run” should be reminded that at his very old age, he is also “Too old To Run.” He should leave the stage for the younger generation of Nigerians.” Recall that Buhari had yesterday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja signed the bill into law. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/06/by-signing-not-too-young-to-run-bill.html

According to a statement released by the Lagos State Police Command, a group of motor cyclists popularly called Okada riders stormed a Police Station at Ibeshe, Ipakodo area of Ikorodu, over alleged death of their colleague and burned down a Police van at about 10.45am on the 30th of May, 2018. See the full statement below: The Lagos State Police Command notes with regret the unfortunate burning of a police patrol van stationed at a black spot in Ibeshe, Ipakodo area of Ikorodu, Lagos state by irate motorcyclists popularly called okada riders, today, 30/05/2018, at about 10.45am.. The incident was occasioned by an encounter between policemen manning the black spot and an okada man plying the routes way beyond Lagos state approved time of 10pm. As he approached the police pin down point, the police team observed that he was carrying a passenger with a big bag placed between him and the rider and so they flagged him down but instead of obeying the police hand signal, the okada man increased his speed in order to evade police scrutiny. Sadly, he ended up in a ditch and passed on. Meanwhile his associate with the suspicious bag vanished into the thin air. However, today, 30/05/18, at about 10am, Okada riders sympathetic to their late colleague, mobilised in their thousands and attempted to burn the Ibeshe Police Post. They were resisted. So they moved and found a softer target which was a police van stationed at a known black spot in Ibeshe and set it ablaze. In view of this incident, the police authorities in Lagos state wishes to warn all those with the penchant to burn, destroy or loot its property/armoury, that henceforth the Command will be compelled to use all lawful means including the use of firearms to protect such properties and defend its personnel. The police in Lagos will no longer standby and watch hoodlums destroy government property worth millions of Naira for whatever reason. Any group of persons with complaints against the police action, must toe the civilised option of registering their complaints with the police authorities for appropriate action. The CP Lagos has directed that the sixty three okada riders arrested for burning the police vehicle should be charge to court for arson. He has also directed the OC Legal to file a motion to a court of competent jurisdiction to surcharge the suspects for the purchase of another police patrol vehicle. Sharing is caring. The Northern Youths Forum on Wednesday stated that the ongoing strike by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) was “politically motivated.” The organisation alleged that the JOHESU strike was “induced by looters, fraudsters and economic saboteurs who have issues with President Muhammadu Buhari and his administration”. Addressing a joint press conference in Jos, the National Coordinator, Maimuna Abdullahi, and Secretary of the group, Saeed Siraj, noted that the action was meant to demarket the current administration ahead of the 2019 general elections. Noting that workers’ welfare, including conditions of service, salaries, and other emoluments should be the utmost of their employers, the group believed that the strike was in a bid to score undue political points. NYF said: “We are bound to dissociate ourselves from the premeditated and politically sponsored strike by JOHESU which was wickedly designed to punish poor and innocent Nigerians, all in a bid to score undue political points. “It is absolutely illegal and unheard of, to file an appeal challenging an ex-parte order; ex-parte order can only be vacated. We use this medium to call on the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, SAN, to charge the leadership of JOHESU extraction for contempt of court. “In the same vein, we admonish the management of all the medical facilities to lay off all erring members who have refused to report for duty as mandated by the Industrial court, this lawlessness must stop now.” The group urged the Federal Government and state governors to “take decisive action against self – seeking unions like JOHESU.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/johesu-buharis-enemies-behind-strike.html

President Buhari while delivering his democracy speech today, said that statics have shown that Nigerians now have lesser use of their generators because of the improved supply of electricity. “In the area of power generation, Nigerians from all parts of the country continue to report better power supply and less use of generators. This underscores the effectiveness of the methodical plan to deliver incremental and uninterrupted power supply to our homes, markets, offices and factories. The country achieved 5,222.3 MW representing the highest peak of power generated onto the national grid and delivered to customers in December, 2017. With new facilities, repairs and rehabilitations by government and private investors, generation capability now exceeds 7,500 MW,” he said http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/better-electricity-nigerians-now-report.html
