Igbo Group In Lagos Writes Fashola, Complains About Marginalisation by lalasticlala(m): 10:48pm On Dec 27, 2014
Ndigbo Cultural Society of Nigeria, NCSN a socio-cultural platform for the propagation of the interests of Ibos has sent an open letter to Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, lamenting what it called the marginalisation of Ndigbo in the politics of Lagos state and threatening to shift political support.

The group claimed the complete exclusion of Igbo people in the politics, judicial and other vital sectors of governance in Lagos State despite the sizeable contribution of Ibos to the economic life of the state.

The group in the letter signed by its president, Chief Udo Udeogaranya said Ndigbos are completely excluded from the politics of Lagos State saying that for the exception of one councillor, Ndigbo were completely lacking in the politics of the state.

“Correct us if we are wrong, but about 16 years of stewardship, since the inception of this Fourth Republic, your political organisation, All Progressives Congress (APC) owes Ndigbo Community of Lagos State an obligation to explain to us what is it in the CHANGE that your party continues to clamour, when we have seen nothing except change of name of AD to ACN and now to APC or do we vote for another party,” the group noted.

“Ndigbo have campaigned and voted massively for your party in the previous elections except for Presidential elections, but what is our political fortunes, after these years of solid support?”

“Lagos State remains a homeland of Nigeria Multi-Ethnic group, the resource of the State is not found in the rich Oil and Gas or any other natural resource, but rather on the people of Lagos State and proceeds of their labour, on which Ndigbo accounts for a very large percentage.”

“Despite this, Ndigbo are not permitted by your party, All Progressives Congress (APC) to have a political say, by making sure that in the 376 ward seats, 20 LGA seats, 37 LCDA seats, 40 State House seats, 24 Federal House seats, 3 Senatorial Seats, 1 Deputy and 1 Governorship seats, Ndigbo are completely excluded including areas of the State that are predominated by the Igbo residents, except 1 Counilorship seat in Ajegunle.”
“Is your party, APC suggesting that that those who contribute their resource should not have a say on how it should be managed?

“Markets in Lagos State that can be called Ndigbo markets, for instance the Ladipo Auto Parts market as a test case, have been shut down severally and at will, even with pleadings from South-East State Governors were not enough for your APC led government of Lagos State to understand the need to allow these markets function without unnecessary government intrusions. Is there a change to the policy or is it still business as usual?”

“Appointments in Lagos State have never reflected on the constitutional stipulation of carrying all the people of the state along, even at local council levels, particularly in the appointment of judges in the state. Are Yorubas better qualified than other Nigerians in Lagos State?”

“Lagos State Government continues to fund Eyo Festival but leaves the Igbo day Festival or New Yam festival to South-East governors to fund. Should Ndigbo then pay their dues to South-East Sates governments?”

“Lagos State House of Assembly continues to conduct the house business on Yoruba language, translating that Lagos State is now a mono lingual State, is this as a negligence of facts on ground or that Ndigbo offspring in Lagos State should forgo their cultural background or give up their political rights?”

“Various sons and daughters of Ndigbo in Lagos State have complained bitterly over the ridiculous process in practice it is for an Igbo to obtain necessary government approvals without having to go through Yoruba facilitators. Is this to underscore that one race have become superior to another?”

“Areas in the State densely populated by Ndigbo like Coker, Ajao Estate etc.. have not smelt any completed infrastructural development projects of the Lagos State government, or are there?”

“On the deportation of the 72, you have apologized and apology accepted and therefore case closed. We wait patiently for your answers or we shall look for another come February 2015.”

The group however, overlooked the fact that the spokesman of the APC in Lagos State, Mr. Joe Igbokwe and the state commissioner for economic planning are both Ibos.

Haha.
The handshake has surely reach the elbow
Those who are still doubting the reasons why they have to vote, need to read this.
time is coming soon when everybody would start voting in their region.
Since You do your census in your state of origin, you vote in your state of origin.
As that egbe omo odua fella said in the 50's when azikwe started his intransigent behaviour, in the western region.

The hausa (gambari),we knew
The Ijaws ( ijo) we knew
The nupe,we knew
The urbobo( isobo), we knew
The isoko, we knew
The ebirra, we knew
The igalla, we knew
The igbo,We did not.
For those who do not know what azikwe did, imagine that man came to lagos, saw how beautiful, developed, commercial and progressive lagos was as it had been for over 100 years prior.he went to the briitish to pressure them not to include lagos as part of the western region.
Alas,he had seen free land to colonise.

Seriously speaking, our politics, social values are incompatible.
Do these people know that they are indirectly declaring war?
Are people so rudderless as to lack any form of reasonable leadership?
Those who are reasonable had better advised these JJC villagers who are power tripping.

Hear this and read my lips
igbo will never be recognised anywhere in yorubaland.
Either integrate and forget where you come from, or ship out.
Just imagine.
There are yorubas in kano,
There are yorubas in Port Harcourt
There yorubas in akwa ibom
There millions of yorubas or people of yoruba descent in
Ivory Coast, Togo,Ghana etc.
They go about their businesses lawfully and have integrated in such a way that you would not even know that they were yorubas. Same goes for the binis and other groups.
In short, they blend in and do not constitute a nuisance.
Those who do not want to learn the language should buy a newspaper.
Integrate like others have in the past or get out.
This is the same thing you are told, whether in America, UK, Canada etc.

Please when will our Igbo leaders write an open letter to Jonathan about the infrastructural decay of federal stuctures in Igbo land? Instead of fighting for political positions in another man's house, what is wrong in threatening Jonathan with our votes and make him fulfil his promises to Ndi Igbo?

seriously these group of people need to shut their Bleep off and concentrate on their business. let the Igbo community in the South East extend a quarter of the hospitality they are enjoying to the non-indigens in igboland and we will start taking them serious.

imagine the rubbish coming from a tribe who will never sell a plot of land to non-igbo in their landlocked region

whoever comes to equity must come with clean hands.

Lagos is ripe for advanced political reasoning and multi-ethnic governance. Lagos state is miles ahead of other states in Nigeria. Many Nigerians from other ethnic groups are more Lagosian than their original ethnic group. The state should lead the way in showing other states the beauty of multi-ethnic governance in Nigeria.

All these ethno-religious considerations impede the unity and progress of Nigeria. The minds of the new generation is corrupted by such considerations. In Lagos, kids are born together and mix up with eachother in playgrounds, school, churches and mosques without caring about ethnicity. It is only the grounded TRIBALISTIC social system that separates them and causes strife, suspicion and ethnic hatred as soon as they evolve into adulthood.

If we are indeed NIGERIANS, we should be seen as being Nigerian first before being Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Efik, Urhobo, Tiv etc. Lagos, as a cosmopolitan city, must lead the way.

Although there might be some basis for some of the complaints raised by this group, I think the TIMING and the OPEN nature of this letter make the whole thing smell of POLITICS, rather than a genuine, non-partisan agitation for better socio-economic conditions and more political rights for the Igbos resident in Lagos.

Besides, I think Lagos is one of the few states that have been making some appreciable progress towards addressing the often tricky and sensitive issue of non-indigenes in their states, as some Igbos, Hausas and some other communities have been appointed into some government positions to give them sense of belonging in the state. Many states have NOT started doing that yet.

Why dont you go to chibok or sambisa and preach your messaage of one Nigeria there?

Why are you ibos so feverishly greedy? You are the only non-yoruba occupying a commissioners position in Lagos yet you covetous creatures still lust for more ... What then do you want the Hausas, Ijaws, Efiks and people of other tribe that reside in Lagos to say?

We havent forgotten how Governor Theodore Orji sacked fellow ibos who are non-abians from the abia state civil service few months ago ... I think he needs your message of one Nigeria

Who wants one Nigeria? That one Nigeria mentality belongs to Obasanjo's generation. I will never delude myself as to the workability of a country called Nigeria.
That is why it is not working.
Hausa do not want Jonathan
Yorubas do not want Jonathan
Igbo want Jonathan

Yorubas did not want Obasanjo
Igbo wanted Obasanjo
Hausa wanted Obasanjo

A union of advanced countries (European union)with high levels of literacy, technology and wealth cannot make their union work. Not to talk of a union of disparate tribes, who are barely out of the prehistoric age and without affinity for one another.

Ewwww, you sound so pained and frustrated. Tone down your insults, you can really make your point without using abusive words.

Are you suggesting that the aim of IGBOS to partake in the governance of Lagos state is wrong? Why? Are Igbos not Nigerians? How do you know that you will not be given an opportunity to partake in politics in South Eastern states? Have you tried?

I think we should be clear about what we want as Nigerians. A United Nigeria means that NIGERIANS must be free to live and partake in the Nigerian project from any state they choose. Lagos state, by virtue of history, happens to be a good example of Nigerianness. If it is only Yorubas that must lead in Lagos state, which is not befitting for a cosmopolitan NIGERIAN city, then we must start to question what being a Nigerian means?

You need to cool down. You sound hypertensive.

Igbos should know lagos might be a federal oriented project but dominated by yorubas. Even if there population is 3 times dat of yoruba in lagos. Ethnicity will still count. U don't expect a yahaya to win an election in akwa ibom even if he lives their for a century it can't work.

what happened to staying in their God forsaken enclave and developing their villages?

If Iboes make up 75% of the population of Lagos- why complain?

Iboes should just use their numbers and take over Lagos, what are they waiting for??

I said so because Lagos state is not as close to being an ethnic enclave as most other Nigerian states. The ethnic homogeneity has evaporated from Lagos state hence making it a true depiction of what a United Nigeria should be. If the aim for keeping Nigeria United is to foster integration, then Lagos need to be used as an example for other states to follow. If you love Nigeria and you want to see her succeed, you will know that this is very important.

I don't see the connection between integration and ethnic domination. That Igbos are striving to take part in the governance of Lagos state will not distort the historical antecedents of Lagos state. It will only open up Nigeria for integration.

I just think we need to choose between integration and disintegration. One of the reasons why Nigeria is not experiencing progress is the confusion brought about by our version of unity. It is more like a "disintegrated integration".

Nonsense

Nigeria is made of different ethnic groups!!

Lagos is YORUBALAND!!!!

That ethnic homogeneity you talk about is only possible because YORUBAS are welcoming and give your iboe people a chance to escape poverty .
As always, you iboes will take people for fools and have declared Lagos as no man's land which is bullshiiite.

Iboes are immigrants in Lagos and all Yorubaland. U are here because we welcome u and let u live peacefully and have a life you would not have in your village

We are progressive and will vote for anyone but that is our choice and not at your request.

Can I ask you? What opportunities do non-ibos have in your state?

U can not expect to have what you can never ever give others- hypocrites!!!

It is very hard to satisfy ma pple from SE. Give them a step, they will go a mile. If they want to claim Lagos, let them INTEGRATE properly into Lagos and stop their "Lagos is no man's land" slogan.

The Ndigbo that I know, believe strongly in BIAFRA, and will stop at nothing to achieve that dream, which is their inalienable right.
The question is how will you pledge your Loyalty to Biafra and still want to control the Government of Western Nigeria? Ko possible nao!, or can you serve two masters at the same time?

After all Obama sees himself first as an American before being a Kenyan and he has not even been to Kenya since he became US president.

Ndigbo should see themselves as Lagosians first and not as 'Lagos Residents or Ndigbo Cultural Society in Lagos', then other things shall follow.
