It would be mad!! I see these drills carried out by the NAF panthers, and I wonder why it isn't applied on the battlefield.

With troops been inserted with an Mi-17 and 2Mi-35M providing CAS while the operations last, an ISR acting as the Command and Control.

It would be mad!
Those Helos you mentioned might be too noisy and not very convenient for that purpose. You know, the little bird was designed specifically for dropping SO teams. I still prefer them though.

As for the NAF Operators you mentioned, are they that good? No disrespect to them, but I don't know if they are trained enough to carry out those kind of missions without getting killed. The Seals for example, carry out dangerous missions and casualties are still very rare.

More facts have emerged on why the Armed Forces have yet to deploy their full arsenal against bandits who have dominated the North-West and parts of the North-Central geopolitical zones.

The PUNCH reliably learnt on Monday that the Armed Forces told the National Assembly, through its committees, that the agreement signed with the Government of the United States was that the A-29 Super Tucano fighter jets procured from the country would be deployed against terrorists and insurgents, and not bandits.

Several sources in the National Assembly, who are in the know of the development, said the complaints by the service chiefs led to the recent demand by the Senate and the House of Representatives that bandits should be designated as terrorists.

The PUNCH had reported that the Federal Government in February 2018 placed an order for 12 A-29 Super Tucano aircraft at a cost of $496m.

The Nigerian Air Force had on July 22, 2021, taken delivery of the first batch of six aircraft from the United States. The second batch of the planes arrived in Nigeria in September.

A total of 64 pilots and maintainers from the Nigerian Air Force were trained to the US standards with the US Air Force’s 81st Fighter Squadron at Moody Air Base in Georgia, United States.

The training also emphasised the Law of Armed Conflict and civilian casualty mitigation, which are fundamental principles of the Nigerian military’s professional education and training.

Speaking to one of our correspondents on the telephone on Monday, a top source in one of the security committees in the National Assembly said the Armed Forces, especially the Nigerian Air Force, had not been able to decimate the bandits due to the conditions attached to deployment of the fighter jets.

The lawmaker said, “Let me tell you the truth. We once asked the Armed Forces why they had not deployed the Tucano in the fight the bandits and one of the service chiefs (name withheld) told us that their hands are tied due to the human rights regulations regarding to the aircraft. He told us that the equipment is meant for the war against terrorists and insurgents and since these are bandits, they cannot be deployed.

Bandits not different from B’Haram, Buhari should implement N’Assembly resolutions – Lawmaker

“He actually told us that once the bandits have been designated as terrorists, they would be wiped out. Don’t forget that the bandits today are not different from Boko Haram, looking at their activities and the gravity of attacks by them. Now that both chambers of the National Assembly have called for the declaration, we urge the President to implement our resolutions.”

Another reliable source in the security committees, who was asked to confirm the information from the first source, said it was true. “We have done what we ought to do, so the ball is no longer in our court,” he stated.

The House of Representatives had on September 30, 2021, asked the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to designate bandits and their sponsors as terrorists.

The Senate had made the demand the previous day.

Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Babajimi Benson, who moved a motion of urgent public importance, urged the chamber to back the Senate.

The motion was titled, ‘Declaration of Bandits and their Sponsors as Terrorists.’

Moving the motion, Benson said, “The Senate, on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, adopted a motion asking President Muhammadu Buhari to declare bandits ravaging the northern part of the country terrorists and wage a total war on them. They also asked that the president declare all known leaders of bandits wanted and arrest them wherever they were found for speedy prosecution. Such declaration to be done through a Proscription Order can be done pursuant to Section 2 of the Terrorism Prevention Act, 2011 (As Amended).

“I will like to echo the same sentiment and ask honourable colleagues to join the Senate in urging Mr President to declare bandits and their sponsors as terrorists. This will underline the determination of government to combat the wave of criminality and murders conducted by bandits all over the country.”

He noted that declaring bandits as terrorists could be done through a proscription order.

Benson listed more benefits of declaring the bandits terrorists, noting that such an order will officially bring the activities of bandits and their sponsors within the purview of the Terrorism Prevention Act, while any persons associated with such groups can then be legally prosecuted and sentenced to penalties specified in the Act.

He said, “Declaration of all bandits as terrorist may also encourage other countries to do same and help create a global consensus around dealing with transnational factors that feeds the domestic activities of such proscribed organisations and individuals.”

Chairman of the House Committee on Army, Abdulrazak Namdas, in an interview with one of our correspondents on Monday, stated that the bandits had ticked all the boxes on the indices of terrorism. He, however, denied knowledge of any complaints relating to deployment of the Tucano jets.

Namdas said, “Now that the government has started getting the Tucanos and we have another batch coming, and the morale of the troops at the moment is high; though we had one or two casualties but this is part of a war and there is nowhere in the world that when there is a war, you expect no casualties – it should only be seriously minimised; when you strengthen the security forces and we agree that these bandits are terrorists, then it would give us the opportunity to deal with them, with all the full force.”

Also speaking The PUNCH, Benson said the resolutions by the Senate and the House should have been transmitted to Buhari for consideration and sanction.

He said, “The truth of the matter is that I don’t know if it has been transmitted but I am sure that when the two sides of the National Assembly pass a resolution, it should be given a thorough consideration. And I doubt if the bureaucracy people (National Assembly management) have transmitted it, to reach the attention of Mr President.”

The US had said the A-29 Super Tucano fighter jets would assist Nigeria’s anti-terrorism fight, especially in the north-eastern part of the West African country.

The US Department of Defence leaders had attended the induction ceremony of the Super Tucano jets on August 31.

An inquiry sent to the United States Embassy in Nigeria on whether the Super Tucano should be used only in fighting terrorists had yet to be responded to on Tuesday.

However, in an earlier chat with The PUNCH, acting Public Affairs Counselor, Jeanne Clark, explained that the use of the weapons would be subject to the Leahy vetting, a law which is an American rights law that prohibit the US government from providing military assistance to foreign security force units that violate human rights with impunity.

Clark stated Nigeria is a strategic partner of the US. She added that the US would ensure monitoring to ensure that the weapons are used for their intended purpose.

She said, “We have direct and open communication with the Government of Nigeria regarding our expectation that all security forces be held accountable for protecting civilians and respecting human rights. All Nigerian military personnel trained by the United States are subject to Leahy vetting.

“All potential US defence sales are carefully assessed under the US government’s Conventional Arms Transfer Policy to examine issues, including human rights, regional security, and non-proliferation concerns, to determine whether a sale is in the best foreign policy and national security interests of the United States.

“Review and monitoring are integral components of the process for any US-origin defence articles delivered to any recipient nation. This helps ensure that those articles are used by the intended recipient in the manner intended and consistent with the provisions of the agreement for the foreign military sale.”

When contacted on Tuesday to confirm transmission of the resolution to Buhari, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (House of Reps), Mr Umar el-Yakub, noted that the Clerk to the National Assembly transmits resolutions by the lawmakers directly to the President.

El-Yakub also noted that the liaison officers only convey communications from the President to the National Assembly and are only copied documents transmitted by the parliament on special occasions.

When contacted, the Director of Information, National Assembly’s management, Mr Rawlings Agada, advised The PUNCH correspondent to cross check with him on Wednesday as he did not have any information on the issue yet.

He said, “I don’t have any information yet on what you are asking me but you can crosscheck again tomorrow so that I can make some enquiries for you.”

A Spokesman for the President, Garba Shehu, told The PUNCH to direct inquiries to the Ministry of Defence when he was asked if the refusal of the President to designate bandits as terrorists was preventing the full deployment of the Super Tucano weapons in the North-West.

“Please contact the ministry of defence. They will be the best to answer this. Thank you,” Shehu stated.

In his reaction, the Special Assistant to the Minister of Defence on Media and Publicity, Mohammed Abdulkadri, directed one of our correspondents to the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor.

Also, calls put across to the Spokesman for the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, didn’t connect while a response to a text message sent to him was being awaited as of the time of filing this report.

Bandits are NOT terrorists but YES we can use Super Tucanoes against them.
Brazil used Super Tucanoes against drug lords and their operations.

This news report is just flying unnecessary kites.

There was tension in Etekuru, in the Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State on Wednesday when soldiers and youths in the community clashed.

Our correspondent gathered that a soldier had earlier been ambushed and killed, while his rifle was stolen.

In a reprisal, soldiers invaded the community and burnt houses.

The fight came two weeks after soldiers clashed with youths of Izombe, in the Oguta Local Government Area of the state.

The attack led to the death of three persons, including two military men, and burning of tens of houses in the community.

The latest development caused tension in the community, making many flee their houses.

A spokesperson for 34 Artillery Brigade Command, Obinze, Owerri, Joseph Akuga, did not take his phone, which rang out.

He had also yet to respond to a text message sent to him as of the time of filing this report

They are deliberately creating an escape route for Kanu based on pressure and possibility of negotiations from Igbo groups and may be the international community
Only naive kids on Nairaland don't see this.
The charges that should make him go for a life sentence have been reworded in a more benign manner.

The Kanu guy himself knows they could have killed him anywhere between his country of arrest and Nigeria nobody would have known so all these infantile chest beaten by teenagers on Nairaland is rather irritating

A fully loaded luxurious (Volvo marcopolo) bus with an inscription “GUO OKEKE MOTORS” was early on Wednesday intercepted by armed bandits with about 90 passengers kidnapped.

A source who witnessed the incident told Pointblanknews.com that, “the bus which was travelling from Owerri in Imo state and heading to Abuja with about 90- passengers including another 35 additional passengers on attachment on board unfortunately ran into the waiting hands of dare-devils armed bandits just after the Ena- river before Okhuessan community along Ewatto to Ubiaza express road at about 1:20am this morning and 123-passengers including driver on board have been kidnapped into the forest while the remaining 2- escaped through the windows of the commercial bus into the bush before one of them was later rescued by a hunter at Okhuessan forest and brought to the popular Angle-90 junction in Ubiaza at about 5am this morning for possible assistance.”

According to the source, "at the moment, there is no clue as to the whereabouts of the kidnapped victims and there is also no rescue team whatsoever from any quarters though my personal interaction with the passenger who was fortunate to have escaped and rescued revealed the armed bandits were all armed with Ak-47 assault multipurpose rifles and a sharp matchet each and they are suspected to be fulanis by tribe."

It is like I invite my state governor for a chess game and he wins three games in a row. He has a kindergarten mind if he does not realize I made him win out of respect.

Nigeria has to respect its S. It is now mandatory for would-be policemen and those joining other gun-wielding security agencies to undergo psychiatric and drug tests, the Federal Government said yesterday.

Besides, those who are serving in the armed forces and the allied agencies will go through such tests periodically.

This is one of the measures taken by the government in the aftermath of last year’s #EndSARS protests.

Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed announced this yesterday in Abuja.

Yesterday was the first anniversary of the widespread protests by some youths against brutality by policemen especially men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The protest snowballed into violence which led to the destruction of various government and private properties runing into over a trillion naira.

In Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan and some other cities, some youths held rallies and processions to mark the anniversary. There was no record of margin violence at any part of the country.

Speaking in Abuja, the minister, who itemized other remedial measures by the government in response to the call by the youths, said the Federal Government’s nine-reform plans for police and other security agencies.

He said “of 28 states that set up panels of inquiring on the #EndSARS protests have limited their reports to the National Executive Council (NEC).

Also yesterday, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo urged the youths to participate in politics to effect the desired changes in government.

Mohammed, who addressed reporters in Abuja, said the reforms were aimed at enhancing the efficiency of security agency.

He said the said: will insist on adhence to the rules of engagement and use of cutting edge technology in the fight against crimes.

Mohammed added: “NEC called on the leadership of the security agencies to ensure that persons recruited into arms-bearing security agencies undergo psychiatric evaluations and drug tests before enlistment and periodically after enlistment to ensure that the personal are psychologically, fit to carry live weapons and to identify behavioural tendencies that may require psycho-social intervention’s.

Other reforms are: “Persons recruited into arms-bearing security agencies undergo psychiatric evaluations and drug tests before enlistment and periodically after enlistment to ensure that the personnel are psychologically fit to carry live weapons and to identify behavioural tendencies that may require psycho-social interventions.

"Personnel of the agencies dutifully observe Rules of Engagement in the discharge of
their functions/duties around and within the civilian populace.

"While acknowledging the various initiative introduced by the Federal Government to strengthen police accountability through the Police Service Commission, sustain improved funding and budgetary allocation to the Nigeria Police Force and other securities agencies, and the lifting of the ban on recruitment of police officers, Council urged the Federal Government to give priority to the general welfare of police officers and personnel of other security agencies. In particular, it advocated the review of pension and gratuity of retired police officers and attainment of parity of remuneration by police officers with sister security agencies.

“Undertake a comprehensive assessment of all police stations across the country with a view to ensuring that they are fit for purpose.

“Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies should deploy cutting-edge technology in the fight against crimes.

“Nigeria Police Force to, in line with the mandatory training provisions of the Police Act 2020, prioritize training of Police Officers on procedures for the entrenchment of human rights provisions guaranteed by the constitution and on the professional handling of weapons.

“All those detained by the Police as a result of the EndSARS protests are expeditiously processed with due regard to the principles of fair hearing.

“The system established within the Nigeria Police Force for receipt and handling of complaints or petitions is strengthened, and all police officers on duty should be in police-approved uniform with their full names and force numbers boldly written for easy identification.

“The states should, as resolved by NEC:

– Properly utilize and support the community policing programme of the Federal Government, with active collaborative efforts and participation of traditional rulers, elders, youths, vigilante groups, etc.;

– Establish standing committees under States Ministries of Justice to address human rights violations on a continuous basis; and

– Take measures aimed at flushing out miscreants squatting in uncompleted buildings, and other blackout spots that serve as hideouts for criminals.

The minister highlighted the actions already taken by Federal and state governments to address the grievances that led to the 2020 protests, including:

the disbandment of SARS; establishment of judicial panels of inquiries to investigate allegations of human rights violations by the police and other security agencies; the setting up of Victims Compensation Funds from which many victims have received payments of sums awarded to them by the panels; and prosecution of police personnel indicted by the panels.
Mohammed said 11 of 28 states that raised panels have submitted reports to the National Economic Council (NEC).

He said all those indicted by the various judicial commissions will face trial.

The minister however, described the alleged massacre at Lekki Toll Gate as “phantom.”

He said the six soldiers and 37 policemen who died during the EndSARS protests are human beings with families lamenting that the human rights organizations ignored the casualty figures.

He said: “Out of the 28 States, 11 States (Abia, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Kwara, Nasarawa, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Plateau, and Rivers) have submitted their final reports to the National Executive Council (NEC). Governors of other States have also indicated that their reports would be submitted soon.

Osinbajo, who spoke at a virtual forum with Nigerian Fellows of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, said youths should embrace politics.

According to a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, Mr Laolu Akande, Osinbajo said the transformation of society is largely dependent on the actions and decisions of those who occupy public offices.

He said: “You need to go the extra length if you are not already involved, get involved in politics—while a lot can be achieved in civil society, government still holds the ace in terms of capacity and resources to bring social goods to the largest numbers.

“Besides, being deciders instead of pressure group at the table in policy formulation are hugely different positions. The consummation of our great ideas to transform our societies ultimately will depend on “those politicians” as we sometimes derisively describe them.”

Osinbajo added: “African nations and especially our country, cannot afford to have its best minds and most committed social activists remain only in the civil space. No, we simply can’t afford it, you have to get involved in politics. You have to be in the position to make the difference on the scale that is required.

“Of course, there are many who will not be involved in politics but those that are inclined should, and there will be many challenges even in the winning or getting heard in politics. But I want to say to you that it should be an objective that you should set for yourselves, to get involved at whatever level of politics so that you can make the difference on the scale that is required.”

This is kindergarten thinking.
It is like I invite my state governor for a chess game and he wins three games in a row. He has a kindergarten mind if he does not realize I made him win out of respect.

Nigeria has to respect its S. Eastern Co-founding tribe that gave us our first president and some of the most creative and hardworking people so this idiot Kanu is probably being given legal avenues to wriggle.. but of course if he was destined to die like a fowl or rot in prison, it will still happen.

A foreign TV channel tried to show GMB a video of unarmed IPOB members that were been shot dead by soldiers and policemen just because they are holding a meeting.

GMB no even agree to watch the video not to talk of caring about people shot dead for no sensible reason.

He had all the time in the world to negotiate with IPOB, instead of negotiating, his Government went on to proscribe the group as a terrorist group.

They had the chance of negotiating with Nnamdi Kanu after he appeared in Israel, they didn't, someone now wants me to believe Government is now interested in negotiating from the comfort of his room grin

A Government that spent our scarce dollars paying people that kidnapped Nnamdi Kanu in Kenya, just to have a negotiation with him grin

Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr Nnamdi Kanu has arrived the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, venue of his trial over allegations of terrorism and treasonable felony.

Although his visuals could not be gotten, he was however believed to be among a convoy of about six vehicles that drove into the court premises around 8am on Thursday morning by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS).

The convoy was led by a black Prado jeep, followed by two Hilux, two buses and other two other Hilux.

Before his arrival, security operatives including DSS, Nigerian Army, Police and the NSCDC had condoned off all enterances leading to the headquarters of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Even staff of the Federal High Court had to alight from their staff bus to be screened before they were allowed to go in.

Nnamdi Kanu was arraigned alongside four others on six count criminal trial charge bordering on alleged terrorism and treasonable felony in 2016.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was admitted to bail in the sum of N100 million with three sureties in like sum, one of which was a serving Senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe.

However, he had jumped his bail in 2017 after his family house in Afarukwu, Abia State was invaded by personnel of the Nigerian Army.

Following the jumping of his bail, trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako had voided the bail and issued a warrant for his arrest.

After nearly four years of being a fugitive, he was re-arrested by security agents in collaboration with interpol and brought to Nigeria in late June to face his trial.

At the proceedings in July, his trial could not go on because of the failure of the DSS to produce him in court.

Justice Nyako had held that the court could not try him in absentia now that he has been re-arrest and in the custody of the federal government.

She accordingly adjourned to today for his rearaignment.

Only few days ago, the federal government had amended the charge to seven.

It would be recalled that the court had in 2019 separated Kanu’s trial from the others after he jumped bail and ordered his trial in absentia.

Armed bandits on Wednesday reportedly bombed a train travelling between Abuja and Kaduna, inflicting technical damages on the country’s major rail infrastructure.

Former Senator Shehu Sani said a train he rode between Kaduna and Abuja on Thursday morning nearly derailed because of an explosive that damaged a section of the tracks.

Mr Sani, in a telephone exchange with Peoples Gazette over the incident, said the bandits were targeting the trains in order to dispose of passengers of their cash and other valuable possessions. He also said the attackers opened fire on the train driver.

A spokesman for the Nigerian Railway in Abuja did not immediately return a request seeking comments on Thursday morning.

Bandits have repeatedly targeted the railway between the nation’s capital and the key northern city, which has become the preferred route for passengers seeking to avoid the perilous three-hour journey by road.

The deadly gangs have raided military bases and shot down at least one reconnaissance jet of the Nigerian Air Force. Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that the military paid a ransom to the bandits to prevent President Muhammadu Buhari’s plane from being shot down.

The president has repeatedly vowed to be ruthless against the attackers largely responsible for widespread abduction and plunder of communities across Nigeria’s northwestern region.

But security agencies are warning that the gangs are becoming more armed with sophisticated combat equipment that would make it more difficult to defeat them.
