lol, me know? na just article i saw and decided to share. what do you think about the dead count? thought that was high

SamuelAnyawu:

How are we killing ISWAP leaders? Through Soldiers on ground or Air strike.
The way our security personnel are reporting these deaths is kinda quite confusing.

Here in Borno it is claimed that Al-Barnawi was injured in an ambush by loyalists of Shekau around mandara area.

The Nigerian Army has been described as a useless organisation filled with corrupt generals and unable to protect the country from mutating violence, The Economist reported in its latest issue.

“Nigeria’s army is mighty on paper,” the London magazine said. “But many of its soldiers are “ghosts” who exist only on the payroll, and much of its equipment is stolen and sold to insurgents.”

The Economist said Nigeria has not been able to address its insecurity because military chiefs have plundered much of the country’s combat resources and the rest had stretched thin with little capacity to forestall the crisis.

“The army is also stretched thin, having been deployed to all of Nigeria’s state,” the paper said in its upcoming October 23 issued that was published on its website today.

The paper also said Nigeria police has become demoralised due to poor training and endemic corruption.

“The police are understaffed, demoralised and poorly trained. Many supplement their low pay by robbing the public they have sworn to protect,” it said.

A spokesman for the Nigerian Army did not immediately return requests seeking comments. Nigerian military chiefs have for years faced allegations of corruption and collusion with violent criminals as a way of keeping themselves enriched.

A large cache of military weapons had ended in the hands of insurgents since 2016. In July 2019, Nigerian soldiers fled with hundreds of millions of NAIRA they were asked to transport to Abuja by an army general.

The money loot was immediately traced to Hakeem Otiki, a major-general who was subsequently dismissed from service after a military trial. Anti-corruption activists said the Nigerian Army took action because the soldiers fled with the loot and the scandal became public.

Three attack jets of the Nigerian Air Force, NAF have bombarded scores of Islamic States of West Africa Province, ISWAP, terrorists in the North East.

PRNigeria gathered that the bombardments of the jets were executed at an Island in Tumbun, near Lake Chad.

A military source, said following credible intelligence that the ISWAP fighters in about 11 boats were converging for a meeting at the Tumbun Island, the NAF aircraft, under Operation Hadin Kai, were scrambled to carry out strikes on the targets.

“The aircraft scored devastating hits on the meeting, leaving some survivors scrambling for their lives,” he said.

Minister of Transportation Rt.Hon. Chibuike Amaechi has reassured Nigerians that there would be improved security on the Abuja/Kaduna train route.

Amaechi also said, plans were underway to digitalize security on the nation's railway facilities.

Amaechi spoke during an unscheduled assessment tour of the train service to ascertain the level of damage caused on the rail tracks after it was attacked by bandits who used explosives to detonate the tracks.

He said, " We want to assure the public that beyond the physical presence of Police and the Military along this track, we will get a rail bus for patrol regularly so that we can see what is happening even before the train takes off, and it will be end to end.

Apart from this, there has not been any security challenges on this track. What this has done to us is that we would fasten the procurement process of the digital security system that we planned to put in place. It has gone to the Cabinet two weeks ago and it has returned. So, we'll re-present it to Cabinet to ensure that we get approval for the installation.

"The essence of the digital security system is to enable us to know when there's an impact on the rail to forestall this kind of attack. We will get the Police involved so that they will be here before the installation of the digital facility"he said.

Amaechi said , though he may not be happy that the attack occured, fact has shown that Nigerian Engineers are now capable of constructing their own railway.

Hear him, "I am not happy that the security breach took place but what it has done is to show that we actually have the capacity to fix our rail . The essence of this is to make sure that by the time the Chinese leaves we should start the gradual process of constructing our own railway. The repair was done by our own Nigerian Engineers in record time and by tomorrow (Saturday) we will run the first train", he said.

Fencing can't work. That's a distance of over 200km. It runs through many villages bisecting them. People must cross the railway lines to get to different places or even see their next door neighbours. Cameras can't work either because of distance and remoteness. Don't bring up tracking with helicopter.

UAVs are cheap, efficient and not so man power intensive at doing surveillance missions. Even civil institutions can operate them to monitor their assets.

Nigeria’s Naval Shipyard Limited (NSL) has recorded a major milestone with the local assembly of 4 x semi-ballistics gunboats for the Defence Headquarters (DHQ).

The boats were conceptualized, designed and built by NSL. The boats have carrying capacity of 7 persons and endurance of 6 hours as well as cruising speed of over 35 knots.

This achievement will reduce the Nigerian Navy’s dependency on external vendors as well help advance the Federal Government’s local content vision, as captured in the Presidential Executive Order 5.

The National Security Adviser, General Babagana Monguno (retd), yesterday, revealed that the new leader of the Islamic State of West African Province, ISWAP, Mallam Bako was two days ago killed by the military.

Recall that the Chief of Defense Staff, CDS, Lucky Irabor had told State House correspondents last week Thursday that the ISWAP leader, Abu Musab Al-barnawi was eliminated by the military.

Briefing journalists after the meeting of security chiefs presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the NSA, said that in the last two months, the military has recorded a lot of successes in the fight against insurgency in the North-East zone of the country which put pressure on on the ISWAP and the Boko Haram Islamic terrorists.

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin asked a court to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a Nigerian separatist group over the sale of aircraft the plaintiffs say will be used to persecute its supporters.

The two officials, who are the defendants in the case, said a federal court in Washington has no jurisdiction to address the claim brought by the Indigenous People of Biafra, or IPOB, according to their motion submitted Oct. 18.

IPOB filed a complaint against the senior members of President Joe Biden’s cabinet in August, asking a judge to compel them to reverse the recently completed sale of a dozen A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to Nigeria’s air force. The secessionist movement’s complaint argued that the planes will be deployed against their sympathizers.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, which proscribed IPOB as a terrorist organization in 2017, accuses the group of waging a violent campaign against state personnel and assets. IPOB says it’s a peaceful movement working to establish an independent nation in southeastern Nigeria that will defend the Igbo ethnic group against discrimination by the federal government.

IPOB’s complaint said Blinken and Austin violated laws intended to protect civilians from harm caused by U.S. weapons in the possession of foreign security forces.

“It would be inappropriate for the court to weigh in on a sensitive foreign affairs matter,” the U.S. officials said in their response requesting the dismissal of the case.

The United States Government says the Federal Government is expected to deploy the Super Tucano aircraft only in the northern part of the country where Boko Haram terrorists have engaged the Nigerian state in a decade-long insurgency killing thousands and displacing millions.

This, therefore, precludes the possibility of the Federal Government deploying the security equipment in the South-East despite the designation of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra as a terrorist organisation and the setting up of the armed Eastern Security Network by IPOB.

The South-East has been the epicentre of a secessionist agitation threatening to break up the country.
Briefing journalists earlier in the week, the US Principal Deputy National Security Advisor, Jonathan Finer, at an event attended by the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, said the terms of the agreement during the sale of the 12 Tucano aircraft were explicit.

Reacting to a question on whether the Tucano fighter planes might be deployed against secessionists in the South-East, Finer said the planes were an important platform for security, particularly in the North, expressing pleasure over the conclusion of the deal.

Finer said, “We are pleased to deepen our security cooperation with the Nigerian government. I think we made it very clear our expectations about this platform where it would be used and in the right way and we are always raising concerns when we have them and that it’s true with all our security partners around the world.
“This is an important platform for security, particularly in the North and we are pleased the transaction is finally concluded.”

The PUNCH reported on Wednesday that the military had not been able to deploy the Tucano planes to crush the bandits in the North-West because the agreement signed with the United States was that the aircraft, bought from the US, would be deployed against terrorists and not bandits. This implies that the fighter planes have only been deployed to fight Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East.

It was gathered that the complaints by the service chiefs led to the recent recommendation to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), by the Senate and the House of Representatives that bandits should be designated as terrorists, so the planes could be deployed against the bandits.
The President has yet to speak on the matter. His Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, also told The PUNCH to direct enquiries to the Ministry of Defence.

The Federal Government had ordered 12 A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to aid its war against Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East. The aircraft were said to have cost $423m.

On July 22, 2021, the Nigerian Air Force said in a statement by its spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, that the first batch of six of the Tucano aircraft arrived at Kano at about 12:34pm.
Those who received the aircraft were the Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi; Chief of Air Staff, Oladayo Amao and the Chief of Army Staff, Farouk Yahaya, among others.

Also, on October 18, 2021, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the remaining six had been received and had been deployed to the North-East.
Speaking on a TVC News programme, ‘This Morning’, the minister said, “All the 12 Super Tucano fighter jets have been received. As at this morning, all the 12 were here and they have been deployed to the North-East.

“We can see that the Tucano jets are actually game changers. Most of the successes we have recorded in recent times is because of the acquisition of new platforms, not limited to the super Tucano.”

While the jets were being awaited, some members of the National Assembly visited the United States in May to inspect the aircraft. The lawmakers include Senator Michael Nnachi, Representatives Abass Adigun, Babajimi Benson, Shehu Koko and Abubakar Maki.
They were received by United States officials from Embraer Defence Security Incorporated and the Nigerian Defence Attaché to the US, Air Commodore Jibrin Usman, the Lead Foreign Liaison Office on the A-29, Air Vice Marshal Sule Lawal, among others.

The US officials pointed out that the aircraft were designed in accordance with NAF’s specific operational configuration.

Also, a total of 64 pilots and maintainers from the Nigerian Air Force were trained to the US standards with the US Air Force’s 81st Fighter Squadron at Moody Air Base in Georgia, United States.
MASSOB expresses worry over fighter planes

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra says it fears the Federal Government will deploy the Tucano planes to attack Igbo youths agitating to secede from Nigeria.
It said the worry of its members was triggered by the killings and burning of houses in Igbo communities by the personnel of the Nigerian Army in Imo State in the name of reprisals.

The spokesperson for MASSOB, Samuel Edeson, told one of our correspondents in a telephone interview that many innocent Igbo youths had been killed by security agents.

He added, “The Fulani herdsmen have been terrorising the entire Southern and Middle Belt region but the Federal Government has not tagged them terrorists or send soldiers after them. Their agenda is to annihilate Ndigbo and take over our God-given land but one thing is sure, evil will never overcome good.”

Do you know how much it cost to operate an Agusta, for just an hour? This is not sustainable at all... We should imploy an all encompassing security strategy and that starts with identifying and attacking the bandits/ cum terrorists and their camps head-on, unrelentlessly. The gov't is still playing politics with banditry otherwise I don't see why they haven't been declared terrorist even though Lai Mohammed came on air to tell us that they can't be declared terrorists because they don't have flags and don't threaten the existence of Nigeria. El-Rufai have been begging FG to declare these guys as terrorists to no avail that's by the way sha the attack on the train was not surprising to me what was surprising is that it took them this long to begin to attack the trains, all the big men abandoned Kad - Abj road for the trains and you think the bad guys won't change strategy?
It will take a while before train services will be restored on that route as it is impossible to monitor the tracks for that distance.
Politicians and high ranking individuals will abandon the trains for the air till Bandits acquire Manpads.. oooo! I even forgot the road leading to the Kaduna airport is even worse in terms of insecurity than the Kad-Abj highway... State/community policing still remains the best way to go an El-Rufai would have taken very decisive decisions if had control of the Police.

I think you do not get that part. The aircraft will only be used for quick response when cameras or drones detect threats on the rail tracks.
You know there's an Airforce base in KD and I believe some Aw109s are stationed there, so the aircraft will be called upon if there's a need to neutralise any threat detected.

We've had just one case of attack since the rail was commissioned in 2016. so let's assume we encounter 10 threats in a year, deploying an Augusta 10 times in a year isn't going to cost anything.
And if bandits plan attack 10 times in a year without success, they most likely will ditch the plan

Bandits Abduct Three Travellers In Ekiti After Gun Battle With Soldiers

Those kidnapped were said to have been held at Ayedun-Ekiti, a town located along the same axis, after the soldiers succeeded in botching the kidnapping attempts at Ayebode.

Three travellers have been abducted in Ayedun-Ekiti, in the Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State following a gun duel between gunmen and soldiers in the area.

The police spokesman, Sunday Abutu, who confirmed the incident to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti on Friday, said the gunmen abducted three persons during the confrontation.

Abutu stated that the combined forces of the military and the police rescued six other captives from the gunmen.

The statement read, “The information we heard was that four persons were abducted. Security operatives responded swiftly to the situation and rescued six persons.

“We have begun investigation and we will try and ensure that the abductees are brought back safe and sound.”

It was gathered that though the solders foiled kidnap attempts in the two communities, three commuters were later picked up by the gunmen as they escaped into the bush.
