According to international law, there are two principal ways in which citizenship of a country is obtained, namely - jus soli, and jus sanguinis.

Jus soli is a Latin term that means "right to the soil". It is citizenship earned by virtue of being born in the territory of a country. Thus, regardless of the citizenship of the parents, a child born in some countries is automatically a citizen of that country. Most countries in the Americas (North, Central, and South America) offer unconditional jus soli citizenship.

On the other hand, jus sanguinis means "right to blood". It means that a child earns citizenship of a country "by birth" if either parent or grandparent is a citizen of the country in question. Unlike the jus soli countries, no one becomes a citizen of a jus sanguinis country by being born in the country. Most countries outside the Americas are jus sanguinis jurisdictions. For instance, to be considered as a Nigerian citizen, apart from naturalization and registration, at least one parent or grandparent must be a Nigerian citizen.

Some nations (e.g. the United States) offer citizenship by both jus soli and jus sanguinis.

A baby born in the United Kingdom also does not earn automatic citizenship. The baby would have to be born to at least one British parent, grandparent, or a parent that is a legal British resident.

International law also grants citizenship to babies born over the airspace or on the territorial waters of a country. However, most countries have enacted varying qualifications to this rule. For example, a child born in a US-registered aircraft or ship only acquires jus soli citizenship if the birth took place above US airspace or within it's territorial waters. Moreover, a baby born on a Nigerian-registered aircraft over American airspace is deemed to be a U.S. citizen, by virtue of the 14th amendment (section 1) to the U.S. constitution.

If a baby is born in a Nigerian-registered plane to 2 non-Nigerians, over international airspace, the baby would be a citizen of the parents original country.

Do you know how much they made in Nigeria? A friend who worked in one of their firms told me they would have been richer than Dangote if they Nigerians by birth. Very shrewd businessmen.
