Revitalised Hamilton sets F1 pace

Lewis Hamilton's hopes of recovering from his disastrous start to the 2009 Formula 1 season were lifted as he set the pace in first practice in China.

The defending world champion benefited from a revamp to his McLaren to set the fastest lap in Shanghai.

Brawn's Jenson Button, the winner of the first two races, was second quickest, 0.116 seconds adrift.

At the qualifying race for China GP Mclaren, Ferrari, & Renault made it to Q3 but Alonso surprised everyone in his Renault qualifying second on the Grid.

Red Bull Driver Vettel denied Jenson Button a spot on pole.

Ferrari Massa lost his touch and dropped in Q2 but his Kimi made it to Q3.

Heiki messed up big time dropped in Q2 but Hamilton managed a 9th spot on the grid. That is a good new for Mclaren fans.

Note: Most of the Drivers who set the fastest time in Q3 may need to spend more time tomorrow to re-fuel when they pit.

At the end of today's race in China (WET),we have another champion (RED BULL: Sebastien Vettel) and in fact it ended RED BULL 1 & 2.

An improvement for Mclaren, Heiki 5th and Hamilton 6th finish on the Grid. It would have been a better race but Hamilton made mistakes thrice in the wet. Kovaleinen went from no point in 2 races to 4 points in 5th position in China.

VETTEL became the first to give RED BULL team its first win in Formula One just like he did for the Toro Rosso, and as for Mark Webber's China second place is his biggest achievement ever in Formula One .

Another bad news for Ferrari, Kimi Raikonen finished in 10th place on the grid while Felipe Massa developed a fault (Electrical) I think.

Fernando Alonso Renault Diffuser worked quite well in qualifying but due to the WET condition of the track he finished 9th on the Grid.

There are more surprises to come because teams like Williams, BMW, Mclaren, Toro Rosso, Renault and RED BULL are beginning to get things right in their cars. But Ferrari seems to be having problems at the moment; there is little to say for now.

Note: Fernando Alonso is not Ferrari's Driver. He Drives for Renault.

Hamilton & McLaren will face the FIA, on April 29 to answer charges of breaking the international sporting code.

Lets hope Mclaren remain in Formula 1 and not suspended.

If Mclaren's purnishment is too much to bare they may decide to quit Formula One just Porsche couple years ago.

And the more Manufacturers leave the worse it gets for formula One. It is not good for Formula One History

New Teams are not joining Formula One. I know most people will say Brawn GP is a new team but those guys are just a sick Honda having a facelift.

These crazy rules are not making F1 fun anymore i miss the good old days of Schumacher,Hill,Hakkinen,Villeneuve,Prost and Senna where championships where won on drivers skills and ability and not some funny rules or misinterpretation of facts

If not for the rules Hamilton would have won in his first year in Formula One, the same rule almost cost him the trophy last season.

the rules are getting even crazier. Not sure I would be watching all the races. These stewards just need to see a doctor and examine their heads.

I think in any sport, the higher your points, the higher your position, right? in F1 its different. it sucks.
Re: Formula 1 Grandprix 2009 by FBS: 10:29am On Apr 24, 2009
Lewis Hamilton's testing season received a timely boost as he clocked the quickest lap of the first practice session in his fast-improving McLaren.

The world champion, just 10th in this year's drivers' championship, recorded a time of one minute 33.647 seconds early on in the dry heat of Bahrain.

BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica used their power boost systems to effect to finish second and third.

Brawn GP's championship leader Jenson Button came through in fifth.

Little, in truth, can be truly drawn from a session in which the dramas of the 2009 season did not flare up - and practice is rarely genuinely indicative of what will happen in qualifying or the race itself.

But Hamilton and his McLaren team will be pleased that their car is showing signs of life as they continue to recover from a disastrous start to the season.

CRASH:

F1 » Merc threatens to walk if FIA is hard on McLaren
Mercedes-Benz has dropped its clearest hint yet that a harsh penalty from the FIA over the Melbourne 'lies' scandal implicating McLaren-Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton could lead to the German manufacturer pulling out of Formula 1.

The Woking-based outfit is due to appear before the governing body's World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) in Paris on Wednesday charged with bringing the sport into disrepute by breaching Article 151c of the International Sporting Code.

The controversy arose when it was revealed that Hamilton and respected long-time McLaren sporting director Dave Ryan had 'deliberately misled' stewards following the curtain-raising Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne last month over the incident that saw the defending F1 World Champion pass and subsequently let re-pass the Toyota of Jarno Trulli under a late-race safety car period, ostensibly in an effort to get the Italian penalised and inherit third place by default.

Whilst initial punishment was limited to disqualification from the Albert Park results, both the FIA and F1 ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone have since stressed that 'further sanctions' are far from out of the question – with the most serious penalty applicable that of exclusion from the entire 2009 campaign.

Though Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Vice-President Norbert Haug has been quick to re-iterate the Stuttgart marque's continued commitment to the cause in Bahrain this weekend, the CEO of parent company Daimler AG has been anything but as certain.

“If circumstances should change, perhaps because of an unreasonable punishment by the FIA, it is possible that we could consider our engagement,” Dieter Zetsche confessed in an interview with German news magazine Focus.

The Daimler executive committee are understood to be due to meet on Monday – two days before the WMSC reunion – to discuss a possible exit from the top flight. Mercedes was known to have been extremely unimpressed at having had its name dragged through the mud over the infamous espionage row into which McLaren plunged only two years ago.

@ FBS
If you guys take a step back and look at the battle for the championship title last year abd a year before. McLarena and Ferrari were hot on each others tails putting all their enery and research into improving the car week in week out.  During this space of time however, teams like HONDA (now Brawn GP), BMW and Force India were putting more into researching their 2009 F1 cars.  If you all notice that Braan (the Principal owner of Brwan GP) pointed out during their F1 Overtaking Steering Committee (the committee that proposed the radical changes like adjustable wings, KERS battery, etc) that the rules guiding the rear column behid the cars are subject to various interpretation as the rules are not clear.  I can recall in that he was shouted down several times (according to one of the reports I read) by a few teams chief among which is the BMW Saubau team. The report goes to say that BMW think that they are far ahead of other teams with their innovative designs and KERS system thus it will be foolhardy to derails their advantage over other teams hence the reason for goign against the issues raised by Brawn.

Brawn on the hand having worked for Ferrari knows how to put his strategy in to play.   Although he got a bulk of starting investment from the departing HONDA management he was able to hit the ground running with his innovative rear double diffuser by exploiting the loopholes in the rules to his advantage while other teams were sulking.  And all along during the reasearch and developmtent phase he got the nod from FIA that his clever rear difuser design were within the stipulation of the rules. I am not surprised that his team are in front, what I am however surprised at his that BRAWN GP supposedly think that they can gain another six-tenth of a second, with further improvement, over other cars.  That's gona be interesting to see how things develop over the course of the year.

Unfortunately for big-spending teams like Ferrari and McClaren, their wings have been clipped by the new 2009 rules. They cannot spend their way out of trouble by including other clever bits and bob to their car during the course of the year.  No wing appendages, no modification of any sort that could signiifcantly change the aerodynamic package of their cars.  Hmm, To add to the woes to Ferrari for example, their unreliability issues have continueed to hunt them.

Before I am torn into pieces, I must add here that I am an adherent McLaren fan. But I wana see how good they are in crisis management and how they can react to such an uphil task playing catch-up with a supposedly newbie in F1. Should be very interesting to see how other teams also react. Somene was suggesting earlier on that other teams will take Brawn to the cleaners when they develop their own rear diffuser. Need I remind you that as soon as you add nayting or remove any bit of the car then you have successfuly compromised the aerodynamic balance of the car. Branwn have succeeded in designing its 2009 package botton-up taking into account of the diffuser and designing the air-flow around the car such that the diffuser collums allows airflow through it thus giving a powerful downforce. I am not in any way suggesting that other teams can't design a better diffuser, all I want to pointout however is that each team will have do spend more time in getting their heads round re-designing the car aerodynamics - that means more reasearch and test in their respective reasearch wind tunnels. That is definitely equivalent to more time and investment while the season is ongoing. As it may eventually play out, while others are embroiled in re-desinging to get their diffuser up-to-date, Brawn on the other hand is busy researching into finding that extra six tenth of a second they have predicted. Do not forget that aside the rear diffuser, teams like Ferrari and BMW Saubu (who happen to be the proponents of the KERS system) are still dinign it exremely hard to get their KERS system to work properly thus compromising their already stunted pace. Bring it on Brawn.

My other quetion for NLanders, what will happen if Ferrari, BMW and Renault pull out of F1. The 3 teams have threatened to pull out from 2010 championship if the FIA go ahead with its proposed £40m budget cap for each team
Re: Formula 1 Grandprix 2009 by Phony200(m): 9:27am On May 17, 2009
Ferrari is fighting tooth and nail to get the budget cap removed. It won't happen. Every other team is just reeling from the shock of seeing the Brawn rear diffusers work so well considering that it was not really a secret but no one just paid it any mind. Methinks after all is said and done, a compromise will be reached with all the teams but F1 will never be the same again.

Its definitely becoming crap these days to be honest they are not that many good drivers anymore and the stupid rules and regulations are making the sport boring

@Aderoy
Your analysis na baba!! you do know your F1 the thing is even if other teams are able to get their rear diffuser working it might be a little too late in the season for them to catch up with Brawn

Ferrari are F1's equivalent of Brazil in Soccer i just don't know how that sport would look without Ferrari in it losing McClaren would be another big blow i think those two teams actually have the biggest fans in the sport so it would be in the FIA's best interest to appease these guys and work something out
Re: Formula 1 Grandprix 2009 by FBS: 7:33am On May 19, 2009
but the F1 chief says no back down on the budget cap. What happens then?

@Aderoy, going by your analysis, are we to say conclude that it is not JB that is a good driver but rather the car he is driving? Formula 1 is about cars and drivers and you cannot seperate the 2 but the moment one single car has an advantage over others then it is no longer a competition. Where is the leverage? All that is left is for them to do the catch up.

F1 is degrading itself and honestly, I think a lot of people are getting really annoyed not only by the way things are currently going. . .the stupid rules dont even help matters.

Everyone wants to see competitive cars driven by competitive drivers and not what we are seeing now. One good look at how these Brawn Mercedes cars perform at the curves and turns and you will see what I'm saying.

No, this is no fault of BM (they simply took advantage of what other ignored) but then, this is a sport and there should be a leverage.
