Good morning my people. I saw a video of a remodeled kitchen where the tiles were removed and the walls were screeded and painted. Can someone help with how well to protect the WALLS especially with respect to the area of the kitchen sink where the walls come in contact with water regularly. I am thinking of using SATIN PAINT for the kitchen walls. Thanks |

Royruky:Understandably, you have your reasons for wanting to substitute tiles for paint, it's best you use oil based paint for that part of the wall. oil based gloss paint hold up well to regular contact with water. 1 Like |

Polyvinyl chloride commonly known by its abbreviation PVC is a synthetic plastic polymer. It is available two basic forms- rigid and flexible. Polyvinyl chloride is used in many industries especially in construction. Its application in this industry ranges from pipes to doors, windows and flooring. In flooring they come in the form of tiles. Benefits of PVC Tiles PVC tiles are commonly used floor finishes. The tiles are made of a composite of PVC and fiber. This produces a very thin and reasonably hard tile. Flexible PVC Flooring is used in homes, offices, schools and hospitals. Here are top five benefits of polyvinyl chloride flooring: Low cost: The biggest benefit of PVC tiles is that they are inexpensive. They are the most pocket-friendly type of flooring material when compared to other forms such as wood, marble, ceramic, etc. Even luxury polyvinyl flooring is affordable when compared to other materials. When it comes to style and durability, you wouldn’t regret choosing PVC tiles. It is not only an affordable option but the installation cost of PVC tiles is also low. This type of flooring can be put together without incurring professional installation costs. Easy installation: As mentioned earlier, this type of flooring installation does not require professional help. Firstly, the tiles are very light in weight as compared to the other forms of flooring and can be easily moved around. There are various installation options depending on the vinyl floor you have chosen. DIY experts can install these tiles easily by following the right instructions. However, it is recommended to seek professional help when installing PVC or any other type of flooring. Easy to install PVC tiles let you create beautiful patterns on you floor. Make use of the variety of textures, patterns and designs that come printed on these tiles to enhance the look of your home or office space. Small size: PVC tiles come in small sizes (150mm, 225mm and 305mm). The benefit of having small sized tiles is that individual tiles can be easily replaced. This means the replacement cost of these tiles is also low. Ease of maintenance: PVC floors are the easiest to clean. No other type of flooring comes close to PVC when it comes to ease of cleaning. All you need is a damp cloth or mop to clean these tiles. Mostly, these tiles come with various coatings which provide the required protection from stains, moisture and fading. Polyvinyl floors are naturally resistant to scratches and dents unlike hardwood flooring. To keep these floors clean and sparkling just sweep or vacuum regularly. Anti-static: as we all know, the human body attracts static energy. There are variants of Polyvinyl chloride flooring that are anti-static. anti static flooring made from polyvinyl chloride can keep you and your family safe from static energy. This means that you can easily pass cables below the tiles without worrying about the safety of your family from static current passing from the floor. gbadexy: Good day sir. I've followed your inputs keenly and I finally have an issue that requires your expertise. I have a few water soaked walls that have resulted in the walls "peeling". I hope that's the right description. The plaster is coming off and the walls are kinda shedding. Now, is there a way to curb this soaking and shedding by painting? Or am I heading for wallpaper usage? P.S: I unfortunately don't intend to screed. Thanks in advance. |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by gbadexy(m): 6:01pm On Jul 12, 2019 |
HeedrizDepearl:Wall paper is the last thing you would want to apply on the wall sir. With the issue of damp walls, one has to identify and understand the source of water. For the plaster to be coming off shows that it has been on for some time and it's significant. If it's from across the wall, you may use paints that allows water to ran off the surface fast for the external. If it's from the ground, the ideal prevention would have been using waterproof membrane at the foundation stage but in the absence of that, you may landscape the floor in a manner that water runs off easily to the drainage. It may also help if there are no garden or growth close to the building that would retain water. If all that fails, then you may apply undercoat inside to seal the wall. preferably up to the ceiling level so that the damp mark and peeling doesn't appear above it if applied halfway. With the undercoat, water would still look for other weak spot to escape, so it may reappear elsewhere which is why the best option is to identify the source first and deal with it. 1 Like |

gbadexy: This is opening a new chapter to me. I thought the undercoat will suffice but it would appear that the undercoat MAY just prevent the water from coming out from a particular spot. HOW CAN ONE DEAL WITH IT FINALLY |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by HeedrizDepearl(m): 6:48pm On Jul 12, 2019 |
gbadexy: Thanks for this, kind sir. I think its either from the ground or water being retained across the wall. The surrounding grounds have not been floored, so, I'd be sure to do the landscaping. It's a first, and I wish I joined here sooner. I'm sure I would have known about the membrane at foundation. Unfortunately, my bricklayer is not informed either. Thanks again, sir. I'd prolly contact you for the paint when I'm ready. |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by HeedrizDepearl(m): 6:49pm On Jul 12, 2019 |
Royruky: Yeah, I've actually read here before that it merely sends the water somewhere else, same as tiling the external walls. |

Btw, the guy that did my POP actually said screeding would curb the damp walls. Is this a myth? |

Royruky:First identify where the water is coming from sir to know the best suited approach to take. There are many sources with different solutions. It could even be from broken pipe within the wall, from adjoining bathroom or from the water collector up |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by gbadexy(m): 7:08pm On Jul 12, 2019 |
HeedrizDepearl:Alright sir, may God make it easy. Screeding on a damp wall is even worse. It would perpetually be soggy with growth on it and paint would still peel off together with it. 1 Like |

gbadexy: How does one solve it if it is just a DAMP? Will the undercoat take care of DAMPNESS? |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by gbadexy(m): 7:54pm On Jul 12, 2019 |
Royruky:Dampness is simply a state of water being present on a wall, the water could originate from various means, so there can't be a one approach fix all method. |
