Hmm, my brother you are indeed at a crossroad, I want to believe that the final decision is on your hand, leaving your present job for a new offer in lagos is a very big risk, there is a saying that, "no risk no gain," calculate the expenses associated with the new job and evaluate it with the gain on it, there are limitless opportunity in lagos likewise in Ibadan, if I will advice stick to the present job and talk to your boss about increase on your pay, but if it is one man job Pls leave and grab the new opportunity.
Pls evaluate well.
May God guide you.
A little words is enough for the wise.
Thanks.

The only reason he's having this dilemma is that he's focusing on the cost of the opportunity. I would have expected him to carry out a better analysis. SWOT comes to mind.

Better still he's better off focusing on his gain than the price he has to pay for it. His analysis is likened to a child who doesn't want to grow simply because he will outgrow his current clothes, will need more clothes and will probably consume more food. Doesn't make sense.

Hope you get my drift.

If he loves his job, why was he looking for another?

It's actually possible to love what you're doing (job) but may not love the pay

All humans on earth would love to be happy, close to family and, live a contented and fulfilled life. Most times, we erroneously thinks more money will translate into more happiness. Most times, after all the money acquired, we find emptiness and depression.
You got your family, a laid back life, a fair salary package, and free house. All these are what a lot of people will give a leg and arm to get, there in Lagos.
You're about to give up to chase the golden goose.
The grass is not always greener at the other side.
If doubtful, start searching for housing and check the distance to your place of work. Compare and contrast your perceived expenses, family wise and individual wise.
N50k difference may not be worth the regret.
Best of luck.
Life is not about being daring, I believe, but taking calculated and well researched decisions.

Perhaps you are right but I think that is a short term analysis. This dude has to leave his comfort zone if he's going to maximize his potential. Focus on the big pictures. With more responsibilities and experience comes more opportunities.

Question is, where is the work located and where is he intending to rent a house?
If the job is on the mainland he is lucky, but if it is on the island, forget it.

Hi nairalanders,

A brother, who is currently working with a company in ibadan and also stays in ibadan, has got himself in a condition which he needs nairalanders to be of help.

The issue is;

where he's working nw, he's been paid something above 80k sha which is obviously not the worth of the job and his kind of person cuz he has his ph.D. But because of the situation in the country, he decided to stick to the job till he gets another one.
His hustle paid off last week friday when he got another job in Lagos and the pay is above 130k with other monthly allowances. According to him, he loves his current job as it's less stressful and makes him closer to his family. He considers Lagos as a place that is very stressful and will probably cause him to relocate. But the pay is higher.

Now, he's thinking of threatening his current boss with his new job nd pay, maybe the boss might increase his salary and beg him to stay. He is staying with his younger brother in one of the houses his father built before he died. So he doesnt pay house rent with his salary. All that will change when he get to Lagos.

What he wants Nairalanders to do for him is to advice him whether;

-to go for the new job since the pay is high and try to get used to Lagos situation and since he is a ph.D holder, he might higher opportunities from there.

-to stay and continue with his current job since his expenditures are far low.

-to threaten his boss to increase his salary. What if the boss dismisses him? He might end up being in where his mind doesn't.

Thanks in advance.

1. Considering the wage difference, I will advise you to stay where you are. Don't come to Lagos. The pay is not worth the stress and cost of living here in lagos?
2. You/your friend has a PhD and he/she is collecting 80k is another question entirely. It is either you/your friend is a dummy or you/your friend is not saying the truth. So many higher institutions of learning are begging PhD holders to join them with a good pay and you/your friend is jumping from 80k to 130k jobs. Something is missing here. If you/your friend doesn't like teaching/research while embarking on PhD programme in the first place. Somebody is not saying the truth abeg.

Your friend has serious issues

That aside, N130k is not worth it. That money will keep him hungry in Lagos, especially now that he has more issues to think about, one of which is Rent.

Besides, is your friend married? PhD holder? Single? Confuse?

Smh, I'm sure your friend is close to his forties. It takes about 5-6 years, in Nigeria, to earn a PhD.

If i were ur friend i will grab the opportunity,Tho earning 80k in ibadan > 130k in lagos, like you said there are other perks involved,so i'd take it bsides getting bigger opportunity is more likely than gettin any in ibadan...concernin his family he can always move them anytime he wants.

Those of you saying 80k in Ibadan is more than 150k/200k in Lagos are just scared of leaving your comfort zone. His new job also has other allowances. Lagos is also a land of opportunities. He can rent a mini flat while his family still stays in IB. With time he would find his way round Lagos and hopefully if he is smart, would open up a side hustle. Even if you spend 1k a day on transport, you would still have enough if you are prudent. He can even open a biz in IB with what he makes in lag and go over there to oversee it on weekends.

But seriously, a PhD holder should be doing research, lecturing or own his business and not running after jobs. This over dependence on certificate sef.
Re: Should He Leave His Current Job? Help by Jobabori(m): 7:56pm On Nov 19, 2015
PhD is a teaching certificate. You work for it when you have passion to contribute to knowledge in your area of specialisation. If his Phd is not honorary, he should seek for job in a tertiary institution or research centre rather than settling for 80 or 130 k job which is a peanut when compared with what his mates are earning in academics.

Bro lagos is one of the most expensive cities in lagos,u will eventually try to bring in ur family, hv u considered things like school fees, school bus, miscellaneous expenses, electricity in lagos is poor, the stress in lagos can make u look 10 years older within a short period of time..security nko(yh na everywhere no secure, but lagos own na elele).

Difference of 50k might sound or seem alot but by the time u get to lagos u'd know dat Wat u can achieve with 80k in ibadan might be much than what you can afford for 150k in lagos..

Even if u're going to rent an apartment in ibadan it can never be like dat of lagos and also instead of moving to lagos u can already start saving even if it's 25k a month towards having Urr own property..

Been contended is the watch key in life..my dad usually say dat if u aint achieve nothin with millions u might not achieve with billions.

Alot of ppl will leave naija for Yankee only to get there and realize dat they are living a very comfy life in naija..

In context not everywhere is green out there..

But wait first o, 80k for Ph.D? shocked Even 130k no go at all. I hope that Ph.D is not from all those Extra mural kind of universities? undecided If you're sure it's not, then something spiritual must be wrong with that Ph.D you have.
Shey you all that are about entering school or that are in school can see this? Please, know that school is not a guarantee for wealth. It only broadens one's thinking or reasoning horizon.
