Men, have you ever pretended to be in a relationship with someone else in order to attract a woman? My friend thinks that this is what the guy she is seeing is doing, but we can't understand why?

unfotuntaely human beings like the 'taste of the forbiden' and the thrill of the chase - and it feels like some sort of trophy if you do succeed - for some ppl you become more attractive when you are taken.

its like other want to taste what your partner is enjoying.

It's less hurtful to say "I'm already with someone," than to say "NO." If a guy says a straight no, the girl would think she's not good enough, it may affect her self-esteem.
