Foreign Affairs / Indian Gang-rape Victim Dies by 2million1(m): 7:33pm On Dec 29, 2012 |
SINGAPORE (AFP) – Indian gang-rape victim has died Saturday in Singapore after suffering severe organ failure, the hospital treating her said, in a case that sparked widespread street protests over violence against women. Authorities in India have been preparing for the possibility her death could ignite more protests after riot police were deployed on the capital’s streets in the wake of the attack amid simmering anger at the daily dangers women face. The 23-year-old was airlifted to Singapore on Thursday after she was attacked by six men on a bus in New Delhi on December 16, and hit with an iron bar. Some Indian medics had criticised the decision to move her. “We are very sad to report that the patient passed away peacefully at 4.45 am (2045 GMT) on 29 Dec 2012,” Kelvin Loh, the chief executive of Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital, said in a statement. “Her family and officials from the High Commission of India were by her side. The Mount Elizabeth Hospital team of doctors, nurses and staff join her family in mourning her loss.” She had remained in an extremely critical condition since being admitted to the hospital, Loh said, with doctors mounting a last- ditch battle overnight to save her life. “Despite all efforts by a team of eight specialists in Mount Elizabeth Hospital to keep her stable, her condition continued to deteriorate over these two days,” Loh said. “She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome. File Photo: Abia gang rape saga “We are humbled by the privilege of being tasked to care for her in her final struggle.” The victim was treated in Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital after the attack. The decision to fly her out of the country by air ambulance was taken at a meeting of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s cabinet on Wednesday and the government had promised to pay all her medical bills. Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said the government’s only concern was to ensure the victim received “the best treatment possible”. But Indian newspapers suggested the authorities, who have struggled to contain the nationwide protests over the attack, were keen to have her transferred out of the country. An unnamed doctor who was part of a team of experts consulted about the transfer told The Hindu newspaper they had only been asked whether it was safe to move her and not whether it was the best course of action. “The question was not whether there were any deficiencies in treatment that would be met by moving her… She was being given the best possible care,” the doctor was quoted as saying. Samiran Nundy, chairman of the organ transplant and gastro-surgery department of Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, told the paper the transfer made little sense. “I just can’t understand why a critically ill patient with infection in blood and body, high grade fever and on the ventilator is being transferred,” he said. Singh has ordered an official inquiry into the gang-rape and new laws to protect women as well as stiffer penalties for the worst sex crimes. The government has also announced plans to post the photos, names and addresses of convicted rapists on official websites to publicly shame them. The campaign will begin in Delhi, which has been dubbed India’s “rape capital”. Shinde also said Delhi police would soon launch a drive to recruit more female officers as a confidence-building measure. India was rocked by a wave of protests in the week after the attack, prompting authorities to seal off large parts of the capital and to deploy riot police with water cannons tear gas. The Delhi gang-rape has shone the spotlight on a crime that occurs on a daily basis in India, with most such assaults taking place in rural areas. Police said on Friday that a 15-year-old schoolgirl had had her throat slit after being gang-raped in the Pali Muqimpure area of Uttar Pradesh state. A hunt has been launched for three youths after the attack the previous day.http://vanguardngr.com |
Politics / Army Foils Suicide Attack In Abuja by 2million1(m): 6:16am On Dec 28, 2012 |
By Kingsley Omonobi ABUJA—Indications emerged, yesterday, that authorities of the Nigerian Army Garrison Headquarters in Abuja, foiled a suicidal plot by members of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram, to carry out a Christmas and New Year celebrations’ bombing in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. Vanguard gathered that two drums loaded with explosives, several sizes of cans, including those of vegetable oils and palm oil converted to Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs; about six AK-47 rifles and timing devices were recovered. Landlord, middleman nabbed Sources told Vanguard that two persons, the landlord of the house where the high caliber explosives were recovered, and another man described as the middle man who facilitated the movement of the plotters and IEDS to the house, where the attack was to be coordinated, have been arrested by operatives of the Army Garrison Headquarters. A manhunt is also said to have been activated for the persons scheduled to carry out the bombings. Vanguard was told that the operatives, made up of Military Intelligence and counter-terrorism personnel, stormed the house located in Suleja area, following a tip off at the dead of the night, but were unable to apprehend the two suicide bombers, who did not return from wherever they went on that day. It was gathered that both the landlord and middleman were being detained in a military facility in Abuja, while the Police and SSS have been co-opted into the plan to get the two runaway plotters apprehended. Security agents on red alert Vanguard gathered that since the two have not been apprehended, security had been beefed up in and around Abuja, with all exit and entry points receiving special security attention. Also, areas of national importance, including the National Assembly; Central Bank of Nigeria; NNPC Towers; diplomatic missions; Ministries of Defence, Finance, Foreign Affairs; ECOWAS Secretariat; service headquarters of Army, Navy and Airforce; Radio House; prominent hotels and recreations centres, are being heavily secured. Furthermore, patrol teams of the Army Garrison Headquarters, Guards Brigade, SSS and the Police are moving round the city, even as mobile detectors have been activated to intercept any planned movement of explosives or IEDs around the FCT. |

Politics / Army Retires 51 Officers by 2million1(m): 6:09am On Dec 28, 2012 |
By Kingsley Omonobi ABUJA—Nigerian Army, yesterday, retired 51 senior officers, with their retirement letters stipulating that they proceed on terminal leave with effect from December 31, 2012. Vanguard gathered that many of the officers protested to the Presidency and National Assembly over the retirement, claiming it did not follow the terms and conditions of service of the Armed Forces. Affected officers A breakdown of the retired officers shows that 12 Major-Generals, 24 Brigadier-Generals and 15 Colonels were served letters. Among those retired is the former UN Force Commander in South Sudan, Major-General Moses Obi; Commander Infantry Centre Corps, Jaji, Major- General M. D. Isah, who also doubled as Cantonment Commander of Jaji Cantonment that was recently breached by suicide bombers. File Photo: Army Officers However, Army Spokesman, newly-promoted Major- General Mobolaji Koleoso, said the retirement of General Isa had nothing to do with the Jaji bomb blast as he was already due to go. He said the board of inquiry report on the Jaji incident was being studied and that Nigerians will be informed of the outcome at the appropriate time. Reacting to the anonymous text message making rounds in the public domain alleging forceful retirements of some officers, Koleoso, Director of Army Public Relations, noted that it was not common for the Army to respond to such insinuations, but noted it was necessary to exercise the right of response in this case to put the facts before the public. We followed rules, regulations— Army According to him, the administration of the Nigerian Army, NA, as in any organisation, is governed by rules and regulations. He said the 51 officers retired had been notified earlier in the year of their retirement, adding that most of them had voluntarily written regarding same. Subsequently, the Army Council approved their retirement from service having attained the mandatory age ceiling for each rank. He said retirement from any noble profession, especially the Army, was considered a noble exit, which every officer hoped and prayed for. “To turn around to give such a milestone exercise a negative flavour is, to say the least, mischievous,” he said. Among those who put in paper for voluntary retirement is Major-General Olayinka Akinyemi, Chief of Policy and Plans, Army Headquarters. He added that the present leadership will continue to uphold its core values. He said in line with the Chief of Army Staff, COAS’s vision of transforming the NA into a force better able to meet contemporary challenges and President Jonathan’s transformation agenda, the NA will continue to abide by extant rules and regulations. Koleoso said: “The NA uses this medium to advise anybody aggrieved over the decisions of the Army Council to take advantage of the relevant provisions in the Harmonised Terms and Condition of Services Officers, 2012 (Revised) to appeal to the C-in-C through the Chief of Defence Staff and stop banking on ethnic and religious sentiments to pursue personal ambitions. “Also, Nigerian Army under the leadership of Lt.-Gen. O. Ihejirika, is a united, cohesive and focused institution and will remain steadfast in the discharge of its national responsibilities, especially in its present fight against terrorism.” On terrorists attacks Speaking on terrorist attacks, the Army Spokesman said terrorists wanted to create problems by attacking churches and killing Christians, adding that if Christians had not held back, it would have ignited a religious war, which no country ever survived. He said there had been cordon and search operations everywhere in the north and the south. According to him, it is why Nigerians have had a peaceful Christmas and will equally have a peaceful New Year. General Koleoso added that though the cordon and search and roadblocks were not intended to harass or intimidate civilians, the measure put in place had recorded a lot of successes. He urged Nigerians to be patient as the measures might cause some delays, but that it was for the safety of all. |

Politics / Ex-us President George H.W Bush In Intensive Care Unit by 2million1(m): 4:50pm On Dec 27, 2012 |
Austin (Texas) Former President George H.W. Bush is in the intensive care unit of a Houston hospital and is in “guarded condition,’’ family spokesman Jim McGrath has said. “The president is alert and conversing with medical staff, and is surrounded by family,’’ McGrath said in a statement. “Following a series of setbacks including a persistent fever, President Bush was admitted to the intensive care unit at Methodist Hospital on Sunday where he remains in guarded condition,’’ McGrath said. “Doctors at Methodist continue to be cautiously optimistic about the current course of treatment.’’ The 88-year-old was admitted to the hospital on Nov. 23 for bronchitis. A hospital spokesman said in mid-December that the former president was expected to be home from the hospital in time for Christmas, but the spokesman later said doctors felt that the former president should build up his energy before going home. Bush has lower body Parkinsonism, which causes a loss of balance, and has used wheelchairs for more than a year, McGrath said in an e-mail on Wednesday. Bush, the 41st U.S. president and a Republican, took office in 1989 and served one term in the White House. The father of former President George W. Bush, he also served as a congressman, ambassador to the UN, envoy to China, CIA director and vice president for two terms under Ronald Reagan. (Reuters/NAN) |
