OLA AINA: CHELSEA'S NEXT NIGERIAN SUPERSTAR?

Could the 20-year-old defender emerge as a key figure in the Blues' backline?

COMMENT By Seye Omidiora

October 15 2016 was a special day for Chelsea Football Club , but it was extra special for one youngster in particular—Ola Aina—who finally made his Premier League debut for the club he’s been at since the age of 10.

Coming on as a substitute against Leicester City for the brilliant Victor Moses in the 80th minute, the London-born defender had finally fulfilled his dream of donning the royal blue jersey, and even though it was a ten-minute cameo, his mood couldn’t be dampened.

His journey through the youth ranks at Chelsea has been outstanding; following a trial, he made it into the U11s side as a boy, before progressing through the age groups and thereafter making his debut for the U18s in 2012, despite not yet being 16.

His performances for the youth side demonstrated his maturity, and suggested that the Anglo-Nigerian youngster had the potential to emerge as the long-term successor to John Terry.

Aina’s performances after he was promoted to the U21s were exemplary, as he helped them to the FA Youth Cup and Under-21 Premier League in 2013/2014.

The right-back’s displays in the first half of that season led to him signing his first professional contract on his 17th birthday and he was soon promoted to the first time while remaining a vital cog in the youth team that defended their FA Youth Cup and won the inaugural Uefa Youth League.

Aina’s reputation was burgeoning and Jose Mourinho opted to incorporate him into the senior side’s preseason ahead of the 2015-16 campaign. He may not have made an appearance, but his experience of training with the seniors surely left him in good stead as he returned to the U21s.

During his time in the academy, his performances at both full-back positions and the odd appearance at center-back won him plaudits, and his versatility has seen him likened to teammate Cesar Azpilicueta.

Praised for his assuredness in possession, incredible pace, power and high energy levels—he is able to surge forward and make an impact.

In the modern game, full-backs have dual responsibilities—besides providing defensive solidity, they are expected to be a threat in the final third of the pitch by making forays from their defensive position to provide an extra attacking outlet—and this suits Aina’s style of play.

The arrival of Antonio Conte at Chelsea and his subsequent willingness to open the door to youth saw Aina heavily involved in pre-season as he featured in all of the Blues’ six games.

Even though his displays were occasionally raw, he did enough to convince his new manager to keep him in the squad for the current season—rather than sending him out on loan—a big vote of confidence, particularly considering that Chelsea have 38 players out on loan!

He made his debut in the second round of the EFL Cup against Bristol Rovers – playing 77 minutes before injury cut short his outing, and this was then followed by his aforementioned Premier League debut against Leicester City.

Conte’s switch to a back three could ultimately pave the way for Aina’s breakthrough, and his ability to play multiple positions could see him feature more often—primarily at wing back—as he did against West Ham United in the EFL on Wednesday, or even as a central defender in a back three.

In the loss to West Ham he was deployed at left wing-back and got forward at every opportunity, spending the majority of his time camped in the Hammers’ half. He delivered an encouraging showing defensively, tracking back to help his teammates when the team had lost possession of the ball, and all in all it was a satisfactory—if not eye-catching—display.

Ola Aina is emerging as a first-team player at Chelsea, and the current situation needs to be monitored by the Nigerian Football Federation, as it would be devastating to see such another talented youngster lost to England. Could another Chelsea player be donning the green of the Super Eagles imminently?!

Hehehehe! The thing just surprise me because I had thought he was Nigerian for over 6 years because all his profiles showed he is of Nigerian heritage but to come hear say na Ugandan, I no first believe am, but wetin man pikin go do? grin

We thank God for em grace. He is the Lord. grin

If it is true then we have gotten ourselves a good coach because I can't understand why we keep inviting bench warmers and using make shift RB when we have enough RB players playing regularly for their clubs.

Now, you all can see that my arguments are not in vain. grin

The last time I saw John Ogu played, he was totally in control of the midfield against Inter Milan. In fact, I made comments on his performance the same day.

I think he can do the job even if Mikel is not playing.

At left full, e ku ku ma better make we leave Echiejile for there ooooooo else katakata go happen. grin

Joel Obi! Chai! Injury just wan finish this boy career but if he continues to play for his club then I think he deserves a call up. I don't think he should be used as a Lb because you will not be able to exploit his potentials at the midfield.

Lol this man U nogo kill me with laughter oo, katakata kwa? Am eagerly waiting for the list sha

Seriously I actually thought he was a Nigerian and I was always following his progress. Remember when he won Reading player of the year even as a full back. The guy I doubted his Nigerian link was Josh Onomah, until I saw Oghenetega as his middle name.

Please look into Josh Debayo of Leicester and brief me of his profile because I want our left back problem solved ASAP, pending when Jason Akiotu and Udochukwu Anumudu come of age.

ABRAHAM IS 'THE FUTURE FOR CHELSEA',
SAYS CONTE

The 19-year-old is impressing while on loan at
Bristol City, with 11 goals in 16 appearances, and the Blues boss hinted at a role for him next
season.

Antonio Conte says young striker Tammy Abraham is "the future for Chelsea".

The 19-year-old is drawing plaudits while on loan at Championship outfit Bristol City, scoring 11 goals in 16 appearances, to earn a first call-up to the England Under-21 squad in September.

Conte gave Michy Batshuayi a chance to impress up front as Chelsea were knocked out of the EFL Cup by West Ham on Wednesday and hinted at a role at Stamford Bridge for Abraham next season.

"Abraham is another young player, he's the
future for Chelsea, for sure," said Conte.

"He's very young I saw him only one week during the pre-season in America, there we decided to send him to play every game, to get experience, and then come back with us.

"Abraham has a great potential. I think the
academy is working very well.

"Next season, I think now it's important to look to the present."

Thank God he[Abraham] is not playing for Arsenal, otherwise Arsene Wenger would have started making moves to ensure that he is posited to play for England and ditch Nigeria.

Conte has not been honest with Mikel.

Period....

If Conte hard been sincere with Mikel, he wouldn't not have lied that Mikel had injury prior to the game against Zambia.

The fact is Mikel just doesn't want to paint the Coach black any more.

"He has been open and honest with me. I respect him for that. He has explained the situation and I totally understand.
"When you have been at a club for a long time, these things happen where a club wants to move forward.
"I just have to be professional, work as hard as I can to try and get into the team. I work twice as hard every day and it’s because I appreciate this club.
"I have been here a long time, have a lot of trophies and memories that will never go away. If I don’t get back in the side, I will respect it.
"I always respect the football club’s decision. The club is more important than me."

Mikel said Conte has been honest with him and he respects him for that. You tell me conte has been dishonest with mikel. Is Mikel such a baby who can't speak for himself?
Why not get rid of sentiments and
judge the issue on ground?

We are not talking Fabregas. You keep talking Fabregas. I showed you a link. Conte clearly stated he needed Mikel to win games. Now he does not want Mikel near his team. It is so simple.
Fabregas and Mikel have been frozen out by the manager.

The corner stone of your argument why Mikel was dropped was that he went to the Olympics. Fabregas on the other hand had a solid pre season and didn't go to the Olympics, yet he can't get in the side, purely for footballing reasons not because of injury or incompetence.
Don't be creative by trying isolate the two cases because it doesn't suit your argument.

For his age he showed so much confidence. Not shy of taking on the position. And he has this excellent ball holding capabilities. Very skillful and creative. He did better than most of those Arsenal Ajebos that played against Reading.

Due to the formation Chelsea played he played more as LMF than as a LB.

Liverpool Next Big Hope Ejaria Admits He
Was Shocked To Be Shown The Exit Door By
Arsenal

Nigerian midfielder Ovie Ejaria has talked about
his feelings after he was released by Arsenal in
the summer of 2014 after spending nine years at the Emirates outfit.

The Londoner was not lacking suitors after he was discarded by the Gunners, with the likes of
Manchester United and Chelsea approaching him to play for their academy team but chose to join Liverpool instead.

“It was tough. And it came as a bit of a shock, to be honest, ” Ejaria said to Liverpool Echo.

“But I was fortunate enough to have offers from a number of clubs at different levels, some others in the London area and some up north too.

“I chose Liverpool and I’m pleased that I did.”

The 18-year-old made his full debut for Liverpool in their 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup on Tuesday night.

Nobody lied to Mikel. Mikel have been briefed by the club management his services are no longer needed and he is free to leave in January.
Chelsea have been upfront to Mikel and he has accepted the situation.
It's quite childish to assume Chelsea came to this decision because of the Olympics, its not like he came back from the Olympics injured.

Injury-hit Aaron Samuel returns in January - agent

Eagles striker Aaron Samuel

Super Eagles forward Aaron Samuel will return from a long-term knee injury in January, his agent has disclosed.

“Everything is going well with Aaron’s rehabilitation and he is expected back in action in January,” the player’s agent Atta Aneke said.

The 22-year-old Samuel suffered a meniscus injury while playing for CSKA Moscow in the Russian Cup final against Zenit St Petersburg in late April, but only went under the knife in June at a specialist hospital in Germany.

The former Shooting Stars forward has been recovering at his former base of Norway, but has now returned to Nigeria on holidays.

He played last season for CSKA Moscow on loan from Chinese club Guangzhou R&F.

Nigeria/Algeria: Shorunmu Cautions Eagles Against Algeria's Tricks
[/size]
By Alex Monye

Super Eagles former goalkeeper trainer, Ike Shorunmu, has warned the team to beware of the tricks usually employed by North African teams, advising that they should not allow the Algerians to put them under pressure in the build up to next month's Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier slated for Uyo.

He predicted that the Algerians would come to Nigeria full of anxiety, owing to the Super Eagles' victory over Zambia in the opening group game.

According to Shorunmu, the Algerians would try to disorganise the Super Eagles, who have now shown that they can take on any team in Africa, and therefore, advised the players to maintain the standard of play displayed in the game against Zambia.

The Super Eagles' former goalkeeper said, "The Super Eagles have all it takes to beat Algeria.
Winning in Zambia and topping the group is enough to scare the North Africans.

"So the Eagles should use the advantage they have now to maintain their leadership of the group. We have enough stars in the senior national team that can deliver the World Cup ticket. All they need is total support from Nigerians," he said.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles' Skipper, John Obi Mikel, has held a clear-the-air talks with manager Antonio Conte over his lack of playing opportunities, and wants to continue to work hard towards retaining his place in the starting XI.

Mikel told London Evening Standard that Conte "has been open and honest with me. I respect him for that. He has explained the situation and I totally understand.

"When you have been at a club for a long time, these things happen where a club wants to move forward."I just have to be professional, work as hard as I can to try and get into the team. I work twice as hard every day and it's because I appreciate this club."Mikel, 29, has played nonstop at Chelsea for more than ten years following his transfer from Lyn Oslo, Norway.

You have no reason why Conte is not playing Fabregas regularly. There might be a personal reason we do not know. As for Mikel, no matter how you try to avoid it, Conte said he needs him to win games. Simple.

After the Olympics, not even bench.

How can someone compare a player that started three games to a player that has not smelt bench beats my imagination.

The difference is chelsea plan on letting Mikel go for free while they intend to sell Fabregas for money.

EXCLUSIVE: Russian Born Nigerian Defender
Brian Idowu Gate Crash Super Eagles List
For Algeria Tie

As Nigerians await the release of the list of players for the Super Eagles tie against Algeria,
Owngoalnigeria.com can confirm the inclusion of
some players in the list by manager Gernot Rohr.

Rohr confirmed to Owngoalnigeria.com that
changes will be made to the squad that defeated Zambia 2-1 in Ndola, as some fresh faces will be brought in for the November 12th tie against Algeria.

One of the names we gathered is on the list is
Russian born former Zenith St. Petersburg
Nigerian defender Brian Idowu who plays for
Amkar Perm in the Russian top division league.

24 year old Idowu is a full back who can play
either on the left or right side of defence, and he
will challenge the likes of Elderson Echiejile and
Wilfred Ndidi for the full back position.

He was born and raised in Russia and has only
once visited Nigeria in his life time, as report has
it that he was in Owerri when he was about 3-6
year old.

This season he has made 11 appearances for
Amkar Perm, where he has been since the
2011/2012 season when he left Zenith St.
Petersburg.

That means Fabregas and Mikel are not in the same category under Conte. Conte does not want Mikel near his bench. Yet, he can give Fabregas some starts.

GERNOT ROHR SPEAKS ON WATFORD FC
STRIKER’S INJURY

Rumors and false claims often go side by side and though they could persist in Sports there effects more often than not can hurt deeply and in the case of a Sportsman it likely brings frustration and disinterest.

That perhaps would have been the thoughts of
Watford FC new buy, Isaac Success when a
section of the Sports Media criticized him for
snubbing his first call up to the senior National
team.

Gernot Rohr invited the 20-year-old for Nigeria’s
World Cup qualifier against Zambia , but , just
days before he was expected in camp the player
failed to make the trip and he was accused of
feigning injury.

Success and Chelsea FC Player, Victor Moses were both ruled out of the cracker in Ndola for the same reasons. Moses had posted on his twitter handle about his injury.

✔ @VictorMoses
Unfortunately I'm feeling my hamstring and
so the club medical team will be reviewing
me. Will be working hard to get fit asap #CFC

On his Visit to England where he met up with
some of his players and their club officials,
Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles, Gernot
Rohr held discussions – which neither the
Federation nor the Tactician are willing to
disclose.

However though, a recent post per Tunde
Adelakun suggests the German handler is
convinced that Isaac Success was genuinely
injured – though Moses did not get that
endorsement , since he’s returned to action with Chelsea.

”I met @SuccessIsaac and confirm that he was injured and still is. Committed to the @thenff and @NGSuperEagles cause. Unfairly criticised.”

SHOCKER: Rohr Calls Up Victor Osimhen,
Drops Esiti And Igiebor, Obaboana On Standby For Algeria Tie

Ahead of Nigeria’s Russia World Cup 2018
qualifiers game against Algeria, Owngoalnigeria.com can reveal more shock
names included by manager Gernot Rohr for the
November 12 tie in Uyo.

Once again, the ever reliable Muyiwa Lawal,
whose twitter handle goes by the name @muyiwalawal, revealed to Owngoalnigeria.com the changes made to the list by the German coach.

Gent of Belgium powerhouse Anderson Esiti and
Maccabi Tel Aviv midfielder Nosa Igiebor have
both been dropped with the manager handing a
recall to John Ogu, who has been in fine form for
Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

”Apparently Rohr wasn’t satisfied by Esiti in the
game against Zambia and Nosa has not truly lived up to expectation, the two times he has been called up. They are both not in the list but I can confirm to you that John Ogu made the list” @muyiwalawal said in a chat.

He also revealed that Wolfsburg super teen Victor Osimhen was handed a shock recall by the coach after missing out on selection for the previous tie against Zambia in Ndola.

Meanwhile Godfrey Obaboana has been placed on standby as Rohr is yet to decide between the
Turkish based central defender and Granada of
Spain Uche Agbo.
