Hmmmmm...... The "Oyibo" Wall...... smiley
......................................................................
Leon Balogun Okays Nickname Given To His
Central Defence Partnership With Ekong By
Nigerians

Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has placed a seal of approval on the nickname given to his formidable central defence partnership with William Troost Ekong.

The duo are the favourite central defence pair of Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, and after
another commanding display against Algeria,
most Nigerians have now endorse the duo as the main men in defence for Nigeria.

Balogun and Ekong were both born abroad to
Nigerian parents in Germany and Holland
respectively but chose to play for Nigeria ahead
of their country of birth but the colour of their
skin has earned them a nickname.

Teammates call them “Oyibo”, which is a term in the Nigeria local language, pidgin, for fair skinned people especially foreigners or half caste.

Mainz 05 defender Balogun took to twitter to
comment on a post from Ekong congratulating
his “Oyibo partner” for a job well done by terming their partnership as “Oyibo Wall”.

Watching Eagles Play Under Rohr Is Like 94
All Over Again- Celestine Babayaro

Former Nigeria international Celestine Babayaro
has praised the Super Eagles style of play under
new manager Gernot Rohr saying it is provoking
memories of the glory days of Nigerian football.

Since his employment as coach of Nigeria, the
Franco-German coach has won all three games he has handled as coach, starting from the 1-0 win over Tanzania to the 2-1 and 3-1 win over Zambia and Algeria respectively.

Babayaro in an exclusive chat with
Owngoalnigeria.com said the success of Rohr in
the three games he has handled has proven
right, the assertions that foreign coaches are the best for Nigeria.

”The performances of the team under Rohr is a
strong proof that foreign coaches work best for
Nigeria. There’s an identity to the team and how
they play. It’s like watching the 94 Eagles all over again”, he told Owngoalnigeria.com.

”It is not rocket science but the team has
evolved under him. They play with a whole lot of
confidence and above all defensively they have
the mentality of the German defence. Very mean”.

Fulham player of the month explains why
his international career is far from dead

Whites man of the moment believes he has a a golden chance to once again soar as a
Super Eagle

Sone Aluko says he still nurtures hopes of
adding to his nine caps for Nigeria.

Fulham’s player of the month for October says
he hasn’t given up on playing for the land of his
father again - even though it’s almost two years
to the day since he notched his last of
international appearance - a 2-2 draw with South Africa, in which Aluko scored both goals for the Super Eagles.

Fulham and 16 games gone - what's the verdict
so far?

As Aluko logically points out, a top international
side isn’t going to pick you if you’re not a regular with your club - as was the case at Hull for the 27-year-old.

Winner: Sone Aluko

It hardly helps the cause either if the man who
selected you in the first place has died in the
meanwhile.

Aluko said: “International career? It’s not over in my head.

“But the last coach to pick me passed away. The new coach doesn’t know me as a person or a player, so it’s only now I’ve got a chance to show what I can do,

“When you’re on the bench at Hull you aren’t
going to get picked for a national team.

“If I keep playing well then maybe my chances
will come again.

“Sure it’s been frustrating, but now I’m in a good place, my career can kick on from here.”

"It's not all about tactics"..... smiley Well, I feel it's down to both of them... A fine blend of both factors» Man-management and Tactical acumen
.......................................................................

Super Eagles Star- Better Man Management
Responsible For Recent Success Not Rohr’s Tactics

A member of the Super Eagles of Nigeria says the current success the Nigeria senior national team is enjoying under German coach Gernot Rohr is down to his man management skills and not tactics.

Since the appointment of the German coach the Super Eagles have won the three games they have played under him in convincing fashion, especially the weekend win over Algeria.

While most Nigerians are giving Rohr credit over his tactics and technical inputs in the games he has handled the team. A member of the team thinks otherwise.

”It’s not all about tactics, every other coach that I have played under in my stay in the national team is very good when it comes to tactics. Baba (Rohr) has a different approach when it comes to handling players”, he told Owngoalnigeria.com.

“The indigenous coaches who have handled the
team lord themselves our us but Baba (Rohr) has a different method. His ways of communicating with players makes one feel we are both complementing each other.

”That said he talks to almost everybody, jokes
with all and doesn’t make mockery of his players
in public. When Austin Okocha came into our
close door training, instead of ignoring him like
most local coaches would do, he addressed us in
front of him, duly giving him the respect and
praises he deserves”.

The tone of this article shows the hand of Solace Chukwu. As much as I like him, he is like goodjoe, when he likes a player he likes him, when he doesn't, he doesn't. He doesn't like Ekong and he is always criticizing him unfairly. Someone who thinks Ekong's performance in the olympics was a fluke. For the life of me, that defence was solid and if not for the lapses in DMF, Algeria would not have scored. The chances Algeria had were from the lapses in the DMF.

I say that this nairaland thread is perhaps the best source of information about the Super Eagles on the net.
I am also of the opinion that some articles in some sports dailies come up just because of arguments we have had here.

Thanks for this accolades, this is an ex international giving kudos to the team but football analysts here are telling us different story.

If i may ask who among us here believe Eagles we have it easy in this group, beating Zambia at home and No 1 ranking team Algeria 3goals to 1,pls we need to take it softly when commenting on our players.

Some are saying Iheanacho should be bench,Moses minus two goals a flop,Iwobi not in d game,Ekong average,Onazi not good as DM,Omeruo not ok as RB,Akpeyi should not smell eagle's jersey again and Mikel had an average game, then who are d players that executed d match for God sake,we should be appreciative for once coz having 6 points in this dead group is not easy.

Kudos to d boys for doing us proud and to d house pls be objective when analyzing d team. This is a promising team going places even 94 squad didn't find it easy in W/C qualifying coz it took them d last match against Algeria b4 qualification was guaranteed.

AF Nigeria 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers - Africa Cameroon
How Algeria will qualify for World Cup at expense of Nigeria - Captain

Algeria captain Carl Medjani has said he believes his team could still qualify for the 2018 World Cup at the expense of Nigeria.

The Desert Foxes are one of the leading teams in Africa and were widely tipped to win a “Group of Death”, which also has Cameroon and Zambia.

However, after two rounds of matches, they are bottom of the standings on a point.

“We can still qualify for the World Cup,” declared the 31-year-old Leganes midfielder.

“We need to win our remaining four matches and hope the Super Eagles lose a game before their final match in Algeria.”

Nigeria are runaway leaders of Group B with six points after two rounds of matches.

In August 2017, they will first play host to Cameroon, before they travel for the reverse fixture four days later.

Algeria, on the other hand, are bottom of the standings and they will face Zambia in Ndola in August and welcome the Chipolopolo days later.

In October, Nigeria host Zambia and Algeria will be away in Cameroon, before the qualifying series are rounded up on November 6 with the Eagles away in Algeria and Cameroon out in Zambia.

AF Nigeria 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers - Africa Zambia
Cameroon next and they will be tougher warns coach Salisu Yusuf

High-flying Nigeria will welcome closest rivals Cameroon in the next round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers in August 2017 and coach Salisu Yusuf has warned they will be tougher than Algeria.

Saturday’s 3-1 over Algeria in Uyo has consolidated Nigeria’s lead in Group B with six points, while Cameroon are second on the table with two points after they forced Zambia to a 1-1 draw at home.

In August 2017, Nigeria will first host the Indomitable Lions and four days play the reverse tie in Cameroon.

However, Salisu Yusuf said he expects the robust-playing Cameroonians to pose a tougher challenge to the Super Eagles.

“We have to look at Cameroon now because they are a good team defensively, they are not conceding goals, they are not losing games,” he said.

“When they played against Algeria (last month), they had 10 men behind the ball. To penetrate such a team will be difficult.

“They will be even tougher than Algeria were against us in Uyo.

“They are as physical as we are, they will match us power for power. They also have young players like us and they are physical.

“When we beat Cameroon, we could then say we are 60% to the World Cup.

“It’s not done yet. For now we are leading our group. We need to take all our home points, that’s very crucial. We therefore have to remain focused because a football game is not over until it is.

Yusuf was part of the squad when Nigeria beat Cameroon 3-0 in a friendly in Belgium in October 2015, but the Eagles chief coach insisted it will be a different ball game when both teams clash again.

“Times and circumstances have changed since that match,” he said.

“But with the way we are going and the form of our players at their various clubs, we can beat them again.”

Please I oblige you to get an answer from them, concerning the players that executed the game for us. All players in a team cannot have a perfect performance in a match. We can't outrightly condemn any of our player in such a match of that magnitude, considering the result. It is fine to point out one or two of their lapses when analysing, for them to correct and improve on their game. But outright condemnation, not good, not good at all.

If he thinks they can comfortably win Cameroon in Yaoundé and walk over Zambia, he must not be very sharp.

They better forget about the World Cup and focus on next year's AFCON that they stand a chance with, at least Nigeria won't be there to ruin their chances grin

So, I just had time to go through the match again.

Iheanacho's first touch was really average against Algeria, think that part of his game will improve as he gets more game time at his club side.6
Moses kiss was my MOTM, His Energy won us the match IMO. 10
Mikel Played really well In the first half but the game passed him by in the second half.8
Etebo looked out of place in the team for the first 25mins but marshalled the game from there On.8
Akpeyi wasn't to blame for their goal but looked shaky at times. The save he made from the free kick was a turning point in the match.7
Iwobi few glimpse of the player we know but wasn't his day 7
Balogun was caught out of position a few times but was the difference between a win and a draw.9
Onazi, the one time he was drawn out of position by mahrez we conceded that goal. His positioning was excellent prior that goal. 8
Omeruo made the RB position his own despite being a makeshift his interplay with Moses in the early part of the first half was like watching Alves and Messi play.8
Ekong was caught ball watching in second half when Algeria should have gone ahead.

All in All, it was a great game of football. grin

KAYODE GETS EAGLES CALL-UP FOR EGYPT
FRIENDLY

Kayode

Austria-based striker Olanrewaju Kayode will be
invited by Nigeria for a friendly against Egypt on
January 9 in Dubai.

The 23-year-old Kayode, who has played for the
U17, U20 and Olympic teams, has scored four
goals in the league, two in the cup and three in
the Europa League this season for Austria Wien.

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr said they have been
monitoring Kayode and will invite him for the
Egypt friendly.

“We know him, we will invite him for the game in January because normally in January Austria don't play because it is winter and Austria don't play during winter,” the coach said.

"We have a lot of good strikers, we'll follow him up and we'll see him in when he's invited in

I get both side of the divide concerning Kelechi's performance. Ok, A -side wasn't satisfied with is performance, they want to see him perform just as he did for the U17. The B-side was satisfied with his performance because, the match went according to plan. He was able to attract some players to him, there by giving other of our players room to do the damage. But I belief we would all agree that we want to see him score and mesmerize his opponent, for him to be rated as one of the world best and be able to win awards. We know the Algerian defence are strong, but he is going to face a stronger defence in the league and world cup, so it would be good for us if he can improve. Going forward, if we are going to keep using him as our top 9, then he has to be more physical and imposing on his opponent. But sometimes the style of play the team adopts can determine how much he gets the ball.

Team strategy. That is what matters. If Rohr wanted a mesmerizing performance from Nacho, he could easily ask him to drop deeper. That was not the plan. The plan was to keep the defenders of Algeria engaged and give room to the other players.

It worked. That is what matters. Mesmerizing is easy for Nacho. Done it for too long. Rohr knew what he was doing and it worked well.

As for Nacho, Guardiola is trying to make a Messi out of him. Give him time. We will prefer a false 9 scoring loads of goals than a trick pony receiving verbal accolades.

Just asking as I feel this will provide competitive matches for the Eagles to further "gel" before the WC qualifiers begin again in August, since our opponents have the 2017 AFCON matches to do this and we dont. I was wondering if it will start around June 2017 like the last one started in 2015 (remember beating Chad in Kaduna in June last year)

Mickael2:

so you have never seen Iniesta in the defensive 3rd before? Is he a box to box or an Amf?

See, there is this classico, in Luis Enrique's first classico, Iniesta was the second to the last man, he lost possession there and they conceded, that does not mean that he was a box to box but he was the person defending then. This is football for God's sake not basketball, rigidity isn't another name for football. Just because you saw Mikel in our defensive third does not mean he wasn't playing as an AMF, he is the captain and he felt that we were under undue pressure and that was why he came back to offer support. Good captains do that a lot, some who are even strikers might be seen in such positions trying to offer guidiance and motivation, that's not rocket science but how can you even argue that Mikel was a box to box? Ok so your point now is that we were not playing with an AMF? then what's the point of playing a 4-2-3-1? Haba, the formation should have already told you what we are doing na. Go and watch that Germany vs Brazil match again, even Ozil was found in defensive 3rd sometimes, that's the meaning of GERMAN TOTAL FOOTBALL, and we have a german coach too. Onazi was the sitting DMF, except if you know better than Mikel who once said that Luiz was told to sit while he could roam forward.

When Iheanacho is playing as a striker for City and he tracks back close to the defence, he is playing box-to-box. Lol.

Help me teach him because wa Lai, I am tired.

Well not yet.... CAF havent even done the draws for Afcon 2019 qualification series as Afcon 2017 is yet to be played. smiley

But I'm guessing It may start in the international break of september 2018 after the World Cup in Russia (VERY UNLIKELY) OR may start in June next year and continue after Russia 2018 in the international windows of September, October and November.

2017 Will be the year of WHAT IF? For Nigeria. What if we were in Afcon? What if we were in ywc? Fact is we could have done a double and won both. Chai na U20 no wan let me sleep well.

Nacho the super hybrid forward (a no.10 with the instincts of a no.9... A no.10/9 hybrid.... An AMF/SS/ST super combo)..... Hehehehe...

This is the only thing I know that is cooking for Our boy as a 9..... He will only get deadlier in his other abilities a the super hybrid that he is...

The bolded is tantalising and makes my mouth water........... False 9/Raumdeuter extraordinaire/10-9-8 hybrid...

Hehehehehe..... Makes me smile....

We will prefer a false 9 scoring loads of goal than a trick pony receiving verbal accolades.
