Even if super eagles employ another coach dem go still complain

I remember france people calling for the sack of dider deschamps during the 2014 world cup saying he is too defensive, but he ended up in the euros final 2 years later and ended up winning the 2018 world cup, if they had sack deschamps they might not have won the world cup

Dozier Deschamps also had a world class squad at the time. He underperformed in 2014 given the talent at his disposal. Yet I agree with you that we shouldn't be quick to criticise Rohr. This team is improving albeit slowly.

Arsenal on Monday increased their bid for Ivorian winger Wilfried Zaha but reports in the English press indicate that the Gunners have seen their £65m plus youngster Reiss Nelson on loan improved offer rejected.

Unai Emery is hopeful of getting the deal over the line but Arsenal's bid of £55m paid upfront and £10m in add-on is still short of the Eagles' valuation.

However, The Independent is reporting that Palace could also be interested in the possibility of having Nigeria-eligible winger Bukayo Saka coming over on loan as an alternative to Nelson.

Saka's performances for Arsenal especially in last season's UEFA Europa League have always drawn the attention of some European clubs.

The winger was in action for 63 minutes in Arsenal's recent International Champions Cup match against Fiorentina along with fellow Nigerian James Olayinka.

For a record eighth time in their history, Nigeria came away from an African Nations Cup campaign brandishing bronze medals around their necks.

It is not just a record for Nigeria, but also for the tournament. No other country has more third-place finishes in the history of the competition.

When in the past this final podium place has been celebrated as a "golden bronze", this time emotions have been more varied. Nations Cup winner Segun Odegbami vehemently refused to celebrate it.

There are those, like Odegbami, who feel the Super Eagles should have done better than bronze with the quality of talent at their disposal, believing the team was held back by a conservative coach. Then there are those who argue the coach can do only so much given the broken structures in the country.

There is no "one size fits all" solution, but should Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr's position be the major issue of concern?

Calls for the German to be sacked have not exactly been muted. The major reason seems to be his perceived "lack of tactical nous" or, in other words, an "inability to read matches".

The argument here lies in an unfavourable comparison with the late Stephen Keshi, who is said to have led a more limited Super Eagles squad to the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2013.

That comparison loses some steam in the face of context. Keshi had an almost ready-made squad with just a few additions to be made. Rohr has had to build his squad from the ground up.

Keshi's knockout stage opposition in 2013 was Ivory Coast, Mali and Burkina Faso. Rohr had to battle against Cameroon, South Africa and Algeria. The Fennecs, who were described as "deserved Afcon champions" by Nick Ames reporting for ESPN, were taken within seconds of extra-time by the 2019 Super Eagles.

How Algeria's defence made the difference in AFCON final

How Algeria's defence made the difference in AFCON final
While the African Cup of Nations final may have been tough to watch, Steve Nicol says Algeria's defence deserves a lot of credit for their victory.

All of these considerations might explain why Rohr himself has told close associates that he is uncertain if he wants to carry on.

"A lot of things have been going on but he has taken it all because he does not want to cause any controversy," sources have told ESPN.

"But now, he is not sure if he will continue."

Rohr was noncommittal when asked if he would continue, simply telling ESPN with a wry smile: "I go away to rest now, and then we think about it and see what happens.

"I have a clause in my contract, I made sure I put it there, that it is possible I go any time if we agree."

Rohr is due to meet Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick this week as part of that assessment. And if both parties come to an agreement, a parting of ways might come sooner than most expect.

If that were to happen, there will be many who will celebrate. But that would mean losing sight of what should be the more important conversation, one which should go beyond Keshi, Rohr or any other coach.

No team has more Africa Cup of Nations bronze medals than Nigeria's Super Eagles.
GIUSEPPE CACACE/AFP/Getty Images
Nigeria have had six coaching changes in the past five years. Samson Siasia, Keshi, Sunday Oliseh, Siasia again in a stand-in capacity, Salisu Yusuf (also in a temporary capacity) and then Rohr.

Oliseh aside -- he resigned due to issues with the NFF -- the rest have been fired. And the same story goes back even further.

Clemens Westerhof, now acknowledged as one of Nigeria's greatest coaches, was hounded out and did not even bother to return home with the team after they were eliminated from the 1994 World Cup. His former assistant, Jo Bonfrere, who won the 1996 Olympic gold medal with the under-23 team, was fired as Super Eagles coach. Philippe Troussier was fired. Amodu Shaibu was fired multiple times, despite qualifying Nigeria for two World Cups. Christian Chukwu was fired. Austin Eguavoen was replaced by Berti Vogts, who ended up being hounded out. Same with Swede Lars Lagerback, who opted not to renew his contract with the NFF after the 2010 World Cup. It is a long, unending cycle of celebrating new appointments, then bemoaning their (in)competence before sending them on their merry way.

This unending coaching merry-go-round seems to mask -- however unintentionally -- the real issue. That the complete grassroots development of Nigerian football has been, and continues to be, totally ignored. There are no articulated programs to scout, identify, develop and train talent from a young age. No structured tournaments for children to take part in. No playing philosophy, nothing beyond a hit-and-miss approach relying on an entitled "we have abundant talents" narrative. It's an approach that relies on said talents flocking off to Europe before being called into the Super Eagles, or, even worse, the cadet teams.

The domestic league, which should provide a conveyor belt of ready-made talent, is running on life support, as club administrators push back against much-needed reforms.

As it stands, two influential players retired after Afcon: Captain John Obi Mikel and forward Odion Ighalo; John Ogu may have been a bit part player, but he is also almost certainly looking at the door.

Goalkeeping remains a major issue. Nigeria have struggled in that department since the departure of Vincent Enyeama. Francis Uzoho showed some stability at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but was shaky after. Ikechukwu Ezenwa is in his 30s, and rarely gets playing time in the Nigerian domestic league, and Daniel Akpeyi does not inspire confidence among the fans. Some say even among the coaches.

Nigeria can sack Rohr now or hound him out. But precedent has shown they are unable to attract any real big-name coaches. The ones they do attract, they take months just to hire. When a coach is eventually hired, whoever he is, what is the guarantee he will spend more than two or three years before being hounded out like others before?

And after poppling around in a fresh hire-celebrate-hound-fire cycle, the country returns once again to blaming the coach for another campaign that fails to meet entitled expectations, expectations without a grounding in fundamentals.

Rather than debating whether or not to fire a coach who has done more than most since Westerhof in 1989 to reboot the national team, conversation should be focused instead in a different direction.

How to reset the entire national football ecosystem in a manner that begins to produce and develop talent deliberately and consistently, one that will eventually lead to a playing philosophy that takes advantage of the in-bred self-expression of the Nigerian footballer as well as their natural physical attributes.

Nice article. Dissects the roots of our problems in football.

Poor league management

Few if any chances for academy prospect to develop under a template

Age cheating at all levels

Corruption in the glass house

And so on. Sacking Rohr is simply blaming him as a scapegoat for all these maladies. Until there is a deliberate and purposeful revamp in our football, we will continue to replace coaches

And u are gonna compare the Gabonese stars of 2010-2013 to these craps that make up the Taifa stars?

Fabrice Do marcolino 20goals for Angers ligue1

Moise Apanga ligue1

Andre Poko - Bordeaux ligue1

Levy Madinda - Celta Vigo laliga

Junior Ndong - Auxerre ligue1

Eric Mouloungui - Nice ligue1

Daniel Cousin who once scored 26 goals for Lens in the ligue1

Aubemyang the best striker in the ligue1 - Ettienne

Lyod Palun - Nice ligue1

Stephane Nguema who was a forward for PSG a season before that tourney, he also was a former Rennes striker

Ecuele Manga one of the best Centre Backs in the ligue1 from 2010-14

Ekwa Ebanega - Auxerre ligue1

In Didier Ovono, they had one of the best goalkeepers in Africa then and also like many of his teams mates was plying his trade in the ligue1

So bro what took Gabon that far was individual brilliance and sheer luck bkus the squad oozed class (experienced quality players) playing at the highest level, it has little or nothing to do with Rohr's tactical prowess. In fact it was Rohr's tactical ineptitude that denied them a place in the Semis. Compare this squad to Tanzania who can only boast of Sammata in the Belgian league, then u will understand Rohr didnt do anything remarkable. In 19 games with these names in the team, Rohr could only win a paltry 8

And to that guy shouting that they beat Morroco, it was Chamakk's Morroco not Ziyech's. That Morrocan side was so poor, and player for player, they were no match for Gabon bkus Gabon paraded far better players individually. And they were not the Madagasis of 2012 thats so wrong bkus they had players, Madagascar doesn't. In fact some of our starters this year couldn't have started for that Gabonese side, at least I know that no reasonable coach would bench Auba for Ighalo or Manga of 2012 for Ekong of today grin

None of those Gabonese in their state as at that time will make the bench of this current SE. Perhaps, their defender will.

Deserve some accolades, not celebrating it like we did something special. For that to have been the target from the onset displays vividly the narrow mindedness of those in the corridor of power of our football.

We did not strive to be the best we can be. That is what happens every time we set up in a conservative manner.

the biggest problems we super eagles fans have are:

we over hype our players which tend to attract too much expectations whereas in the real sense we just have above average/decent young players who will get better with time.

we love dwelling in the past:

our past exploits in football especially in the African terrain have imbibed this mentality of believing that we are the best and will remain the same till the end of time which makes so many to undermine the strength of other nations in the football world and are left disappointed when reality hits us on the face.

we always want quick fix without putting into consideration how messy the foundation is/was.

we failed to make it to back to back afcon and when we eventually qualified our young team made it to the semis losing to algeria who later won the trophy with a good defensive record of conceding 2 goals and went unbeating throughout the competition. it took westahoff 5 years to build a team that went on to win the afcon which eluded the team since its first triumph in 1982, qualified for its first world cup in 1994 and took the world by surprise by making it to the 2nd round in a group that had argentina, bulgaria which as of then was one of the best european teams then and greece but unlucky to lose to eventual finalist italy. westahof laid a foundation that went on to last for a long time and the result was immerse,40% of that team if not more went on to win the olympics and also made it to the nation 2nd world cup appearance.

i think letting rohr go will disrupt the work and foundation he as built which in my opinion is commendable judging by how messy the team was before he came in and in the space of 3 years qualified the team for the world from a group that majority of us never believed we had a chance to pull through let alone qualifying without losing a single game, qualified for the afcon which the team failed to achieve after its last outing in 2013,made it to the semis and won a bronze. he has not been the best tactics wise but his input so far is commendable which is evident by our latest ranking in world football and how strong the team have grown as they play and understand each other better.

So we will blame our local league and grassroot football for Rohr’s lack of tactical depth.

Our problem in the Afcon lies on Rohr for lacking bravery to go on the offensive.

We can try to build our football but that is no excuse for a coach lacking tactically.

GBS Academy has started a new partnership with FK Senica after a fallout with AS Trencin.

Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that AS Trencin defaulted on payments that were due to GBS Academy which led to GBS immediately cancelling the transfers of two big talents in Tenton Yenne and Peter Eneji who were both on the verge of joining AS Trencin and had almost completed their transfers.

GBS has already initiated court proceedings against AS Trencin.

FK Senica president Ton Cannen who had connections to Tony Harris had successful meetings with him in the Netherlands and a cooperation has been agreed with Eneji and Tenton being the first set of players to join FK Senica while other young talents are expected to also join the Slovakian side soon.

This will come as a big blow for AS Trencin who had successfully cooperated with GBS over several years to land top talents like Kalu Samuel (Bordeaux), Moses Simon (Levante) and Hilary Gong (Vitesse), while Rabiu Ibrahim, Philip Azango and Reuben Yem also all completed transfers to Belgium club KAA Gent from AS Trencin

To rub salt into the wound, debutants Peter Eneji will go on to score two goals against Trencin in their first league match of the season with Tenton Yenne also providing two assists which helped to bring down the former lively side that just managed to survive relegation last season through relegation play off against following the teams poor run of results.

A representative of GBS Mr Kobi told this website Mr Caanen and Mr Harris had a successful meeting and I believe it is the start of a good cooperation.

''Senica is a very good professional and ambitious side with good modern training facilities, our talents will now be going to FK Senica,'' Kobi stated.

GBS is one of the top ranked and most consistent academies in Africa and is responsible for producing the finest pacy wingers and talents in the continent e.g Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon, Samuel Kalu et al.

In 2017 the Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung personally visited the academy to observe the pool of talents in the academy after hearing so much about the academy’s U15 team renowned to be the best in Nigeria.

The Nigerian problem can be expressed in the proposition as follows, " The acceptance of Failure is the beginning of SUCCESS "

We refuse to accept failure as the antidote for finding the solution for success. We instead enthrone MEDIOCRITY and then our in depth cancer CORRUPTION is being treated with paracetamol.

According to reports in the German media, Bundesliga side RB Leipzig are yet to meet Everton's asking price for young Nigeria-eligible winger Ademola Lookman.

Sport Witness citing the print edition of Bild claims both clubs are still far apart in their valuations.

Everton have demanded more than €20 million for Lookman, a fee that the German club are unwilling to match.

Red Bull boss Oliver Mintzlaff has insisted that they will not overpay to sign the England U20 World Cup-winning winger.

Lookman, who has two years on his contract with the Toffees, is believed to pushing for an exit due to a lack of first-team opportunities, with the former Charlton Athletic wonderkid making only three Premier League starts over the course of last season.

He was loaned to RB Leipzig for the second half of the 2017-2018 season, scoring 5 goals in 11 matches in the German top flight.

Cup of Nations (AFCON) came to a thrilling end on Friday, 19th of July after the Desert Foxes of Algeria claimed the title by defeating the Teranga Lions of Senegal. The Super Eagles of Nigeria claimed the bronze medal after beating Tunisia in the third-place playoff.

While the celebrations are still ongoing in Algeria, Daily Advent highlights the players that did not perform up to the standards expected of them at the tournament:

The goalkeeper was part of the history-making Taifa Stars who qualified for the first AFCON Finals in the country’s history under the management of Emmanuel Amuneke. However, the Simba FC star had a tournament to forget as a poor defensive record saw the East Africans exit the tournament at the first round. Aishi conceded five goals in the first two games, both of which ended in defeat.

Manula was the commander of the defence which turned out to be the worst in the tournament. He might have been a bit unlucky with the quality of the opposition he faced while he was let down by his defenders. However, he did not look threatening in goal and attackers were not afraid to try shots from long range.

The Santa Clara defender had enjoyed a decent season in the Portuguese Premier Division but his hype was dulled at the tournament as he was part of a defence that did not perform excellently in Egypt. Cande failed to help his team whenever they moved forward in attack and his few runs forward left them vulnerable at the back.

He committed several unnecessary fouls in the tournament and picked up a yellow card in their final game against the Black Stars of Ghana. Guinea Bissau conceded four goals in three games and failed to score a single goal. It is no surprise that they were eliminated from the tournament after the group stage and he featured in all their games.

The FC Metz defender let his teammates down in the opening fixture of the Black Stars when they faced the Benin Republic. Boye, who had been tipped to be the rock on which Ghana could rest their title challenge was sent off following two bookable offences. The second yellow card was absolutely unnecessary and proved costly as Benin equalized a few moments later.

His recklessness also ensured that he missed out on the important clash with Cameroon. Boye was present in the final games of the Black Stars while they were in Egypt. He was also in trouble in the round of 16 tie against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia and was unable to prevent the North-Africans from progressing to the last 8. He was lucky not to be sent off in the game.

The 30-year-old experienced defender was the core of what turned out to be the worst defence in the AFCON 2019. Mwantika featured in all three games as the Taifa stars let in eight goals in three games in Egypt. It is not surprising that the Taifa Stars were eliminated in the first round of the tournament.

(SP)EGYPT-CAIRO-FOOTBALL-AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS-ALGERIA VS TANZANIA
Mwantika would feel more disappointed because he was the captain of his side. He also committed fouls in dangerous areas to put his team at risk during the tournament picking up a yellow card in the first half against Kenya. He got subbed off by the coach in Tanzania’s final game even with his side chasing the game. This might have been to give the younger players a chance or to limit the damage.

The Barcelona defender had been in the limelight ahead of the tournament because of his performances with the Barcelona juvenile team in the course of the football season. He has even been touted to break into the first team and rival Nelson Semedo and Sergi Roberto for a starting shirt.

Wague had also scored for the Teranga Lions in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia so it was a bit shocking to find him dropped to the bench after a woeful display on his first two appearances at the tournament. He was washed, rinsed, and turned inside out against the Desert Foxes of Algeria and Aliou Cisse had no choice but to drop the underperforming La Liga star to the bench for the rest of AFCON.

Gael Bigirimana | Burundi | Midfielder

The former Premier League midfielder was the anchor of the Burundi midfield but was almost always missing during all the games he featured in at the tournament.

Bigirimana might not have been helped by the fact that the coach needed him to play in different positions in the midfield during the tournament and he struggled throughout. Burundi were eliminated at the group stage of the tournament after losing all three games at the group stages where they conceded four goals and scored none.

Naby Keita| Guinea | Midfielder

Keita was a part of the incredible Liverpool side that won the UEFA Champions League in June before he was judged fit enough to represent his nation at the AFCON Finals. However, his performances in Egypt were nothing to write home about and he might have been better off at home.

He was bullied off the park by Oghenekaro Etebo who plays for Championship side Stoke City when the Super Eagles of Nigeria played with Guinea in the second game of the tournament.

With the pedigree of a European Champion, a lot was expected of Keita as his presence in the middle of the park should have put the fear of God in the minds of his opponents. His Liverpool teammates; Mane, and Salah were impressive for their respective nations with the Senegalese reaching the finals but Keita would probably regret making the trip to Egypt as his injuries might have worsened.

Hakim Ziyech | Morroco | Midfielder

The Ajax winger was one of the best players in the last European season as he helped the Dutch side win the League and Cup double and his strong performances helped them reach the UEFA Champions League semi-final where they lost narrowly to Tottenham. He would have been hoping to bring that hot form to Egypt but he was one of the most disappointing stars at AFCON.

Ziyech had a chance to put the Atlas Lions into the quarter-finals but his missed stoppage-time penalty against Benin hurt Herve Renard’s team dearly as they eventually succumbed to the Squirrels in a shootout in the last 16. While penalties might be a game of luck, he did not hit the target in the last minute of regular time and Morrocans may find it hard to forgive him for his performance.

Nicholas Pepe| Cote d’Ivoire | Forward

Pepe arrived in Egypt amid so much hype as one of the best talents from the tournament. His performances in the French Ligue 1 was so impressive that he was linked with a potential move to European giants Barcelona before the start of the AFCON tournament. The Ivorian forward failed to find the net throughout the tournament.

His performances upfront were not particularly impressive as Jonathan Kodija and Wilfred Zaha were the focal points of the Ivorian attack despite the fact that Pepe had a better season in Europe. His quality is still amazing as Manchester United are reportedly desperate to secure his services despite his poor performance at the AFCON tournament.

Niang was supposed to be the focal point of attack for the Teranga Lions of Senegal, a side heavily tipped to win this edition of the tournament. However, the former AC Milan striker failed to hit the back of the net throughout the tournament as Senegal reached the final of the tournament.

Ahmed Musa | Nigeria | Forward

The Super Eagles Vice Captain featured in all games of the tournament and he was one of the most experienced players in the squad of the three-time AFCON champions. Although the West Africans reached the semi-finals of the tournament and claimed the Bronze medal, the former Leicester City man did not perform to the high standards expected of him.

Musa did not score a single goal throughout his stay in Egypt and he provided only one goal after the ball came off his chest for Ighalo to score the equalizer against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. The pacy winger failed to unlock defences with his trademark runs in the latter stages of the tournament and his delivery was poor on the few occasions that he did.

Clarence Seedorf | Cameroon | Coach

The former AC Milan player was handed the project of defending Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations title but the Indomitable Lions saw themselves knocked out in the Last 16 by bitter rivals, Super Eagles of Nigeria. Seedorf’s coaching credentials took another hit as the former midfielder had already experienced disappointment at the helm of AC Milan, Deportivo La Coruna. He was sacked barely a week after Cameroon’s exit from AFCON.

Fabrice Do marcolino never played in Ligue 1. He scored only 1 goal in Ligue 2 prior to the AFCON.

Moïse Brou Apanga didn't play a single match in Ligue 1 prior to the AFCON.

Levy Madinda played only one match prior to the AFCON and Celta Vigo was in La Liga 2.

Junior Ndong never played a single professional match.

Stéphane N'Guéma didn't play a single Ligue 1 game for 6 seasons prior to the AFCON.

Daniel Cousin didn't play a single match that season.

Aubemyang was an average player prior to the AFCON. He scored 6 goals prior to the AFCON.

Lyod Palun was a bench warmer prior to the AFCON.

This is contrary to your false claims, Rohr's Gabonese team were average players.

Fabrice Do marcolino played 99matches for Angers scoring 20goals a season before

Moise Apanga played 83matches for Brest from 2009-2012 scoring 5 goals as a DMF.

Ligue 1: 1979–80, 1981–88, 1989–91, 2010–
13, 2019— present

Levy Madinda helped Celta return to the Laliga in 2012

Loyd Palun played over 25 matches for Nice in the ligue1 prior the Afcon

The so called average Aubameyang scored 35goals in 73matches, in the ligue1 for Ettienne 2011-13,

In the 2011/12 season, Le Mans had their best run and Ovono featured in more than 30 games and they narrowly missed out on promotion to the ligue1. The following season he joined Soachux.

Remember this is about Tanzania, so tell me, besides Samatta, who else can u mention in the Tanzanian team with a resume as good as what that Gabonese squad of 2012 boasted of?
