First of all, do you have hope in yourself as a microbiologist.
The rest is minor...
Msc holder of computer science once begged me to help her get a job but he made it plain it has to be something not related to computer science cos she no sabi jack. Abeg no look my msc o bros.
Today she is working in etisalat as a company secretary.
So OP, start with yourself & be truthful to yourself before doubting the availability of jobs for your field.

Goodmorning, the emphasis should not be on the course you studied, rather it should be on your person.
What skill have you acquired?
Have you done any professional training before?
Do you belong to any professional body?(as it relates to your field).
How often do you attend seminars in your field of study?
Attending Seminars, joining professional bodies etc will help you meet experienced Microbiologist who can coach and counsel you on the current trend in Microbiology field.

So take a self assessment now dear.Cheers

Oga, it's not your course of study, it's you. Course of study may help some people, but it doesn't stop anyone from achieving what he sets to achieve.

Dele Momodu studied Yoruba. He's now a successful journalist.

If you want to stay in your path, there are hundreds of successful microbiologists. The minimum is to continue studying to PhD and professorship and that's an achievement on its own. Lecturing, local and international researching.

And if you decide to try other fields, there are many bank and company EDs that studied microbiology, for example.
and GNLD Marketers as well

My friend, there's a big hope working in Nigeria as a microbiologist. You just need to find the branch of microbiology that you can fit in and go for it. There are various branches of Mcb including:
1 Medical microbiology ( the chances of working in the hispital is very low because they prefer a lab scientists to a mcblogist. But you can work in outside laboratory)

2 industrial microbiology (you can work in any food industry. You have big opportunity in this group because most employees preferred a mcbgist or a biochemistry)

3 enviromental microbiology (this is my favorite & it's very sure for microbiologist & pays well)

4 pharmaceutical microbiology (very cool branch for a mcblogist to work)

5 petrochemical microbiology ( you must be be highly connected in Nigeria)

6 researchers (to be a researcher is the best for me. In Paris where I base, researchers are so much respected. Virologist, pathologist etc fall into dis group.

7 consultant.

8 lecturer, teacher etc

BrightextBright:
As an MCB graduate, Jobs where your degree would be useful include:
Ecologist
Forensic scientist
Science writer
Water quality scientist
lecturing......

There has been hope and it continues to exist.

1. @OP,These are areas I have met Microbiologist based on my professional experience. You can add to the above I quoted. Note,Some changed/upped their qualifications:

-Environmental Scientist/Microbiologist- a lot of them practice and contribute to Impact Assessments. Met a lot of them.

-You can go further and study Toxicology

-Public/Community Health Specialist

-Go further Industrial Safety

-Laboratory Scientist/Environmental Microbiologist- There is a pretty one in Fugro kiss. Basically in all Labs that offer analysis of environmental components,we find them e.g. Searchgate, IESL,. In Medical Labs too.

-Occupational Health/Industrial Hygiene Specialist/Industrial Microbiologist. Either under HSE or as Quality Control Specialist e.g. food processing industry. They participated in HACCP study with me once.

-Go further into Paleontology/Paleobiology/petrochemical microbiologist. Useful in Petroleum industry. Met them on an offshore project.

2. When I say go further, I mean do A Masters or get further professional qualifications. Get those skill to marktet yourself.

3. Build your network. Meet with other colleagues find them via nairaland, linkedin, etc..(join professional bodies)

4. Work Freelance while looking for that job.

5. Join other guys, pool resources together and get your own Lab. Or offer services.

6. Go into supply of laboratory equipment, reagents, etc.

7. Deviate from MCB and just do other stuff you are good at or passionate about. It must not be specifically about your "paper".

I have read alot of responses which are quite ridiculous and shows that people don't really know about this course.
Yes there's hope for a microbiologist in this country.

I am a graduate of Microbiology (2. 2) and I am presently in the public health sector. I have worked for international NGOs. The pay is good and the opportunities are boundless. Take Monitoring and Evaluation specialists, Public health Admin, or programme officers for instance.

I know Colleagues who work in pharmaceuticals, Hospitals, Breweries, Food Coys, Laboratories, and even research institutes to name a few.

I think the problem OP has is being stereotyped. Please open your eyes, read more, get the right contacts and enjoy your degree.

Like someone said Dele Momodu is now a journalist. There's peops with Botany and History in banks.

Get off your lazy ass OP, believe, and redefine yourself.

I have a younger sister who is studying to become a microbiologist. Yesterday, I interviewed her on her career path. She told me she wanted to work in a research institute as a researcher. She mentioned WHO and their affiliate institutes in Nigeria. Importantly, she has this desire to pioneer cure for some intractable diseases. Needless to say, I was impressed. She told me that some of the chaps who discovered vaccines for some diseases were microbiologists. So, op, there is hope, once you decide on what to do with your degree. Make this decision early enough. Then work for it. And trust God.

Best wishes.

MrTeymee:
Critically speaking, there isn't much for us microbiologists in this country..
In the hospitals, a med lab scientist is preferred over a microbiologist
In the food industries, a food technologist is equally preferred

Teaching biology is the only field the society feels we are needed..

Correct. And also for you to work in a medical organization as a microbiologist, you have to be licensed under the association of medical lab warefa.

On graduating, had this challenge and took it upon myself to join no matter what. Made enquiries at the office in Yaba, was told they no longer allow microbiologist to obtain the license easily again. That i have to go to a school that has medical lab science as a course and register for a two year program before i can be licensed.

Guess what? That was the end of the road for anything related to microbiology in my life. Now working as an IT Expert in the telecom sector. Never regretted a bit.

If you have serious passion for it, go for it. But the sector that is a bit easier to work with as a microbiologist is the food sector. Work in the capacity of a Quality Assurance/Control.

destinkoko has even broken it down and they are facts

poultry business is one of the most lucrative in the world especially when it is setup
and managed properly. The farmers we currently have
are not even enough and will not be enough in the
next ten years! This aspect of livestock farming
presents one of the finest opportunity for
entrepreneurs to make good money within the
shortest period of time possible due to the quick
maturity of chickens.
With over 160 Million consumers in the country who
buys poultry products on daily basis, the market is
always there.
PROFIT POTENTIAL IN POULTRY BUSINESS
1. Chicken do reproduce fast and in large numbers –
Average healthy Layer lays egg almost everyday or at
least 4 times in a week. Some Breeds can lay as
much as 325 eggs in a year and take 21 days to
hatch. This means that technically a Layer is capable
of producing another chicken twice in three days.
So, if you have 500 healthy layers of good breeds
(such as California white) they are capable of
reproducing a whooping 12,000 chicks within 40 days!
2. Chicken grows very fast – Within 21 days, the egg
is hatched and within 28 weeks, they are ready for the
market. That means a farmer may start making his
money in just 34 weeks after successfully setting up
his farm and whatever returns he make could be
doubled in a year based on this calculation.
3. Chicken sells at a very good price – A fully grown
healthy chicken sells between 2,000 to 2,500 naira in
Nigeria. Therefore, if you produce 12,000 chickens in
your farm, you will be making N24 million by the time
they are completely sold.
4. Egg market in Large too – Apart from the chicken,
the egg is another money of it’s own. A crate of eggs
sells for N500 – N550 for smaller eggs and N600 –
N650 for bigger ones. Each crate contains 30 eggs.
Therefore, if you have 500 layers that produces
12,000 pullet in a month and decides to sell all, you
will be making N200,000 to N260,000 monthly.
As you can see, the profit in poultry business is mouth
watering and the turn over time is fantastic as well,
but the big question now is how to start.
