It would really be a good idea if we can have a thread for microbiology students where we discuss ideas, job opportunities and potentials of our wonderful discipline. I must get paid in $$ from this course!

I have read alot of responses which are quite ridiculous and shows that people don't really know about this course.
Yes there's hope for a microbiologist in this country.

I am a graduate of Microbiology (2. 2) and I am presently in the public health sector. I have worked for international NGOs. The pay is good and the opportunities are boundless. Take Monitoring and Evaluation specialists, Public health Admin, or programme officers for instance.

I know Colleagues who work in pharmaceuticals, Hospitals, Breweries, Food Coys, Laboratories, and even research institutes to name a few.

I think the problem OP has is being stereotyped. Please open your eyes, read more, get the right contacts and enjoy your degree.

Like someone said Dele Momodu is now a journalist. There's peops with Botany and History in banks.

Get off your lazy ass OP, believe, and redefine yourself.

Pls how can someone wu alrdy have a b.sc in microbiology end setting up his own laboratory. i mean wat are d steps to take after b.sc microbiology to get d liscence to establish a laboratory?
Re: Is There Any Hope For Microbiologist In Nigeria by Theflint1(m): 8:56pm On Jul 08, 2016
There is a one year laboratory training course available for microbiologists, chemists and biochemist, after which they would be given a licence to open a laboratory, heard the training takes place in Ibadan (UI or IITA...it's one of them).

Or...You can also open a laboratory with the license of a Medical Laboratory Scientist. You might have to pay the Lab Scientist for making use of his license though.

Well it depends on the kind of laboratory you want to open but if it is a Medical laboratory it will be difficult cos the license to open can be gotten only from B.MLS holders anything outside that will be illegal and closed down. You can't own or open a Medical laboratory with BSc Microbiology except you use a license of a Medical laboratory scientist (BMLS).

As for other laboratory you may wish to open I don't know the modalities as to opening such.

Yr advice is kindly needed, pls if u hava made it as a microbiologist kindly put down wat u have done to have a sucesful career

There is Alot of opportunity in the course Am an HND microbiology with me registered and licenced with NISLT and I am having my own company. What I will just tell you is that within you you will determine if you want to work for yield or get employed. This must have been in your mind during the period of your schooling. If I should use myself as am example. I knew within me that I love the practical aspect of the course and I don't want to work for anyone in my life with that I look for the skills that I can bring out of my course to be able to be my own boss and at the same time practising my profession. During my research for that I got closet to the lecturer that are researcher to know more from them and how they go about their research under like two years tutelage I decided to pick the laboratory technology in the aspect of the laboratory animals management which I later build myself up on different animals management which now make me to be a trainner / facilitator on various Agro allied and as well handling the patasitology area of the Agro allied. With this I decide to check myself for competency in many companies in Agro allied products such as AMO BYNG, OLAM.etc where I always applied as QC officer/QA officer with competition with many vet doctors, Animal science/Animal husbandry graduates and the result was very impressive when the performance is even excellent than those in the field. The only thing that peace me off those companies is the payment and time consuming of the job. Today am able to tell you that I trained Dr.,PGDs even graduates in my company with many consultancy services from many other companies such as schools, Pure water company and many farms. No matter how bad the patronage is in a day I can tell you money will surely comes in and not just money but one to make a man live above average Nigerian. Just think of what you can do yourself sky is the limit. Check more on Trinity Crown Science Laboratory and Entrepreneurship Center or Trinity farm and Co.Ltd Oyo.If you need more of my assistant check my signature to contact me. Stay bless

A BMLS degree (via DE) + a valid license to practice makes you a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist or a HND from school of health technology for medical laboratory technician.

Make good use of your plan, if you want to go into research (research institutes) or academics (lecturing) it'd help you but if you're thinking anything laboratory related to hospital setup then you may just take a DE cos even with a PhD in hospital setup you'll still say yes sir to a new/fresh graduate in MLS (Only in a hospital setup).
