US satellite on potential collision course

A giant US communications satellite, probably hit by a solar flare on April 5, is drifting out of control and yet still beaming its powerful signals to the Earth below. More than 150,000 telemetry messages have been sent to try and ‘wake’ the satellite up. They have had zero affect.

The satellite, Intelsat’s Galaxy 15 craft, should be operating from 133 deg West broadcasting TV programmes to cable head-ends in the USA. The problem is the satellite is not communicating with its ground controllers following an April 5 “anomaly” that its builder Orbital Sciences thinks may be related to a massive Solar Flare that erupted on April 5.

The drift is steady and the craft not in any way tumbling. However, if the drift remains uncontrolled it will enter SES World Skies ‘airspace’ at 131 deg East, and affect – and threaten – AMC-11’s C-band transmissions. SES World Skies and Intelsat officials have held regular meetings since April 5 to keep each other informed and aware of the potential threat.

Rob Bednarek, CEO at SES World Skies, told Space News, a specialist trade publication, that cooperation had been good. “We all realize that we could be in the same position tomorrow. We are neighbors in space.”

In three weeks time, according to current estimates, on May 23 the errant satellite will encroach on AMC-11’s orbital position and (if it continues on its current trajectory) exit on about June 7. SES World Skies will move its own satellite out of the way of Galaxy 15, probably to a marginally higher orbit, while allowing G-15 to slip safely by.

However, yesterday (May 3) Intelsat was scheduled to try one last attempt to regain control by sending a much more powerful signal up to the satellite. But experts say this attempt will not be repeated because of the risk of harming other craft in the vicinity.

If this attempt fails then likely the craft will continue its drift across the USA, passing other Galaxy satellites (G-13 at 127 deg W on July 13, G-14 at 125 deg W and G-18 at 123 deg W about mid-August). In time it will naturally drift towards a libration point, that position between the Earth and the Moon where the gravitational pull of both objects are equal and remain in that position for ever.

These two libration points at 105 deg West and 75 deg East contain, between them, around 160 dead satellites. G-15 will probably end up at 105 deg West, provided the other traffic in the sky gets out of the way.

DSTV has commenced shutting down their Cband services yesterday.

anyone interested in getting a WIZtec MPEG 4 decoder without a card reader for 11k should get in touch with me on the phone or email, it's great for mutliTV and any other MPEG4 package. it's full FTA and saves you about 4k on a strong 4669x.
Re: Official Thread Of Free To Air Satellite Tv (part 4) by GeorgeD1(m): 8:26am On May 05, 2010
@olofofo,
That was a great write-up there about the runaway Galaxy 15 satellite. I hope they eventually regain control of it.

Does the WIZtec MPEG 4 decoder have a blind scan?

@borderline,
Welcome back. Do all your lnbs have open covers? If yes, it is possible that spiders and creeping insects may have found a home inside their throats this few weeks that you left the dish unattended. So, try and crosscheck the lnbs, wipe them clean and the signals should improve.

As for w2a, the Chinese have finally encrypted the signals. Not that anybody here will miss them much though since 99% of what they have is easily available on other satellites, free.

@osef,
The lightning strike was a temporary setback but in FTA as in life you learn to take things in your stride.

NTA signals are still very much available on Intelsat 907/c.

Try 4083v, 2893sr. Make sure your lnb is at 2 oçlock position if your using SUPERMAX EXTENDED
c band but if your tracking with STRONG c band make sure it is at 10 oçlock. Best of luck.

@ George D,plz tell me which other sat that i track with my 1.8 dish in ibadan that will give me bbc,cnn,music station like mtv,movies channel,and sport. i used strong decoder srt 4653x DV3 mpeg2. plz explain explicitly to me.
Re: Official Thread Of Free To Air Satellite Tv (part 4) by GeorgeD1(m): 9:18am On May 05, 2010
@femdot,
I see your already missing those Nilesat packages a lot. Unfortunately, there is no other satellite you can get in Ibadan with your 1.8m which can give you all those packages in one position like you used to enjoy them in Sokoto.

What you can do however is to motorize your dish (if you really cannot afford a bigger dish like 3m now).

When motorized, your 1.8m dish can give you CNN @NSS7/c, EATV (music) @906/c, MBC3 (mauritius) @w3a, etc. In all you can receive up to 250 good stations in different positions with your 1.8m dish. In the long run however, you must consider buying a bigger dish (pan or fibre) if your really thirsty for Nilesat. Best of luck.
Re: Official Thread Of Free To Air Satellite Tv (part 4) by femdot(m): 9:56am On May 05, 2010
@George D thanxs for all explainations but will i receive bbc also if i motorise the dish.Hope if motorised the good channels will be better than that of nilesat which are arab channels.
Re: Official Thread Of Free To Air Satellite Tv (part 4) by GeorgeD1(m): 10:10am On May 05, 2010
@femdot,
Yes, you can get BBC World with your motorised 1.8m dish. Only you have to upgrade your decoder to the new 4669X MPEG4. Then you can hook up to Multi-tv @Astra 2B position where you'll be watching 24 hrs nollywood movies and BBC inclusive.

As to whether most of the channels will be better than those on Nilesat, I think it's a personal choice. What may be better for me may not be better for someone else.

Re: Official Thread Of Free To Air Satellite Tv (part 4) by GeorgeD1(m): 10:42am On May 05, 2010
@femdot,
Buy a new STRONG 4669X decoder and use it in place of the old one you have.
Price is around 17K in Lagos.

Going by what I read about these star tv people, and what I heard from a staff of disccom, I would safely conclude that not all the channels on star tv would be encrypted or let me say all the channels that would be on their decoder would not be tranmitted by star tv. The guy at disccom told me that NBC has given the local tv operators up till 2012 to upgrade to digital transmission. He said this means our regular tv would not be able to receive local stations and we would need some kind of decoder to watch our local stations. I think NTA is partnering with thes chinko people in preparation of moving into full digital transmission. while maybe some channels would be encrypted, I believe the local channels would not be though in Nigeria, things dont work the normal way. they might just encrypt everything and ask us to pay b4 we watch our own local stations. DSThieves, HiThieves and MYThieves did it. While we in 9ja pay to watch NTA and AIT, people in Europe watch it FTA. Funny isn't it?

Lest I forget! the same rule applies to DTH operators too oooo. By 2012 or after 2012, expect DSThieves, HiThieves and MYThieves to ask you to buy MPEG4 capable STB's as they are required to transmit at MPEG4 and did people using star tv notice that it is an MPEG4 capable STB.

@segunfms
Star tv is transmitting DVB-T. If anyone have the old disccom decoder, dust it, and scan. you should receive star tv. but when they encrypt, you might not be able to decrypt it.

Vickoy,
it is nice to hear from you after so many weeks of silence.i think it is better to go for the latest innovation in beating the old rogers to their game.

all,
i just had a lengthy discussion with badaru1.i learnt that the old roger is using policemen to chase sellers of the latest fta magic in the north.i am waiting for them to start entering our houses to seize it.naija go burn no be small.it is payback time.e dey pain them.what do you think?
you can get in touch with the gurus in the house at the backyard on how to hook to it as it is selling like hotcake.but be wary of people who would want to dupe you,claiming between 40 and 80K as cost!
Re: Official Thread Of Free To Air Satellite Tv (part 4) by sholasong(m): 8:40pm On May 05, 2010
@ townjuju
60cm work for sirius 4 and 90cm with srt 6953x work for w3a here in Lagos. you can start with any of the two provided you are armed with the sat position and tps, all is available just go to the child board. in my own case i used 1m dish for both sirius & w3a.
