As regards Universities forcing Staff to read their work; my advice would always be to delete the visibility indicator on webometrics and not use 'Reads' as an indicator. Citation is already a good indicator of research impact. I currently like Times Higher out of the four reputable ranking organizations because it is more holistic and ensures you can't 'buy' the good ranking by just going ahead to buy Nobel Laureates(e.g shanghai rankings). Times Higher uses a combination of teaching, citation, international outlook, industry support and so far only UI could meet the conditions for rankings. However I have good info Covenant university would be included soon(provided they get to d 200 journals/year treshold)

You have a good point but that's not the best. The best is making the ranking procedure and sanctions more transparent. These visibility are visible across countries. For example if you check research gate and the likes; for every, both the country and institution from which your work is read is duly recorded, and the visibility indicator extrapolates this (also international outlook) and scores you high for it. If 90% of a school's work is got read by the same school, any further read from the same source should have a negative impact - and universities should be made aware of the negative impact.

@ bizme: talking about universities making their community read their work, it is more common in "federal unis" because the population favor them. Hence big schools in Nigeria have big reads from their institution!

The picture is beginning to be displayed in HD...why is it that luxurious expensive schools are owned by churches dat their members sow tirelessly..yet its only a handful of their members are entitled to the benefit....the puzzle is beginning to unravel...

Tithes cannot sustain those schools. Don't deceive yourself about that.

An example is the pepper seller paying a tithe of 10K per month with 4 children that want to go to the university. The 120K she pays as tithe per year, is it enough to pay the school fees of one child talkless of the four of them?
So why do you think tithes can sustain these schools? Let us be realistic and logical about these things please.
Some of the churches give scholarships to indigent deserving students. That is brilliant children who are poor. That is the way of scholarships everywhere anyway, except for few who get scholarships for their sporting prowess.
Education is expensive. Don't be deceived by the public schools who are subsidised by the govt. They don't pay running costs of labour, and still get funding from the govt despite the businesses owned by the schools.

RECEIVE BRAIN IN JESUS NAME.................. CHECK AGAIN. THE OWNERS PASS THRU FREE EDUCATION

Since you dont pay tithe your opinion is senselessly irrelevant. The folks who pay the tithe dont need you to tell them garbage.
So because its managed by churches it should be free, because the Profs and staff of those Universities are volunteering.Right?
Oral Robert University founded by a church in the USA.Is it free?
You want to tax church managed schools, you should also say they should tax churches too, because the church is owing the Govt.Smh..

nt that would be incurred in providing 24/7 power supply, pay salaries of thousands of workers, building ultramodern buildings fitted with world class labs, well stocked libraries, large hostels to accommodate all the students in the school. if u only u could reason like someone who values quality u wont be talking like this. so u expect the car you bought 10 years ago to cost the same today? i swear u are daft and low in intellect.
today students need constant electricity in their hostels to do assignments, iron clothes etc. they also need internet access. but ur stupid brain wont tell u that those things dont come cheaply.
Students also need labs to conduct experiments with the right tools, ur daft brain wont also tell u that its expensive.
students need functional libraries with power supply and updated reading materials. to u its a cheap thing.
the lecturers wont work for free, they wont live in free houses and be telling their landlord they are teaching for free.
i seriously shouldnt be arguing with someone like u who has a low iq who cant imagine the cost of running a university.
u know wat, why dont u open ur own university and make it free and lets see ow far ur daft intellect will take u in rumning it

Nobody is disputing the fact that govt of the day has failed many, but that was not the basis of argument

The issue on ground was about how Universities owned by churches are expensive, so don't deviate from the topic

All educational institutions requires huge money for funding, and that is the fact

Your justification holds no water, ask your self this question, what is the essence of religion involving its self in education?, to maximized profit or to assist the mankind to achieve heavenly race by providing basic education in affordable price to the common man. it is an abomination for the church to indulge herself in this type of hurdle, a shame and disgrace, Christ come for the common man not for the rich, church should stick that into their respective brain, if the lecturers employed are not ready for that missionary sacrifices , then, they are not supposed to be there in the first instance, missionary work has to be be almost free for all common man, I went thru missionary school in those days and they were almost free, what is happening now is a show of shame and disgrace, the real value of churches, Christianity has been thrown to dogs. Please stop supporting evil , when the whitemen and women came here to teach us this religion we are practicing today, they were not charging us money, they establish schools, churches for almost free and you are here to support evil,

Finally here is someone that understands perfectly what is going on.
@The bold. I was involved in students recruitment for Medicine and Health Sciences at this particular university, traveling around the country for the open days. Students with no more than 200 in UTME are routinely given admission into Medicine and Surgery, even those below 190, once you are well connected. In fact, Obasanjo had once pushed for the admission of student who never offered Chemistry into Medicine and Surgery. And the student was almost admitted if reason had not eventually prevailed.

With 270 in UTME you are not likely to get a spot in Medicine and Surgery in schools like OAU, UI, UNILAG, etc.... Compare the gap in implied intelligence quotient... a school that admits 200 and below for Medicine and the ones that take nothing below 280, and some still believe you can compare the quality of products for the two sets of school! Some of you guys amaze me the way you think.

You simply cannot compare the products. Plus, most students in private universities have no motivation to study. They are in school because daddy and mummy refused to send them abroad, and they continue sulking all day long. Class attendance isn't their thing, while they love to party, do drugs and have sex in gutters and in open fields. ... You can only understand what I'm saying if you have worked or schooled in these institutions.

In summary, big money does not buy you quality education, it only gives your folks and you something to gloat about. At the end of the day, most of the products are so ill-trained that they have little to offer to national development.

I didn't say this out of spite, but as honestly as I have observed things. And yes, I have had running battles trying to encourage the management of the school to prioritize merit and discipline instead of celebrating insignificant and spurious achievements like a student graduating with CGPA 5.0 in Geology. Geology, 5.0??! Can you believe that?
you sound so pained. If you are not satisfied, go and study medicine again. Seems you feel sad you studied basic medical sciences and ended up a lecturer

You're a child. And ignorant too. I did not study basic medical sciences, but then you're too ignorant to realize that.
