68. COUNTLESS


The road I headed to was a deserted one and the few drivers passingby in their cars were probably thinking we were catching fun as they sped past us

I maintained the Usain Bolt speed on the sparsed road thinking that none of the Gatlin thugs behind me could outrun me but I was wrong because after 30meters of the pursuit, the real Usain Bolt among us emerged infront of me and that brought the race to a stop

The others joined him barely secs later and circled around me panting and gasping for breath

I don't have to be told to know that with the level of fury and anger in their eyes, am a walking dead

'Shango if you don't let me faint right now or do something just forget that am your son ooo'.

"you know how to run right?" The Usain bolt guy said after catching his breath "you are so dead today"

I turned around and glanced at the other two guys and saw that they were getting ready to beat me to stupor

"guys am not scared of you!" I said trying to sound courageous "I just pity how your folks will take what will happen to you if you don't let me go right now!!" I managed to threaten them and conceived my fear striken voice

"you even have the guts to threaten us?" The 3rd guy countered and moved closer to me with a scornful look

I took a step backward and colided with the Usain bolt guy at my back

"you better contact your ancesstors because you are dead already". The 2nd guy said

I was still rotating on the same spot when a tricky idea logged into my head

"I suggest you back off now that am still being nice. There's something in my pocket, no one has ever survived its effect." There was a look of confusion on the faces of the two guys staring at me

Confident that the trick is working, I continued "if I used it on any of you, you won't live to tell the tale" I ended with a confident smile. They all bore a look of confusion and that made me ease up the more

In a flash, the guy behind me rushed at me from behind and pinned my arms to my back very tight. The other two joined him quickly in apprehending me. I struggled and scuffled but I was overpowered and outmuscled by them

The first guy thrusted his left hand in my chinos right pockets and drew out my white handkerchief

He scrutinized it and grinned mischieviously

I was still apprehended tightly by the two guys when the first guy holding the hanky waved it across my face

"is this your charm? Eh? Is this what you plan to beat us with? Eh?"

I scoffed at him, "you don't even know that any other hand except mine that touches that hanky is even more dangerous than me beating you with it, you better drop......"

"shut up!" One of the guys holding me barked and I kept quiet instantly

"Dan, abeg wipe his head with the hanky and lets see what will happen to him"

"thats exactly what I plan to do....release him!"

They released their grip on me and the guy holding the hanky quickly swiped it on my head three times.
They kept their gaze locked on me perhaps anticipating what will happen next, but my brain failed to communicate to me that I should pretend as if the charm is working on me and that nearly cost me a serious beating

5secs, 6secs, 7secs, nothing happened, we were just staring at each other

"I knew it, you are lying....you are so dead today" the 1st guy dropped the hanky angrily and just when they were about to pounce on me, we heard a siren sound coming from afar

Thinking its the police, their faces and body became alerted instantly, they spoke to each other in their local dialect and ran towards the direction of the bush

I mentally thank the gawd of thunder for that siren miracle and headed back hurriedly towards where Jide had fainted

"Jide wake up!" I shook him vigorously for the upteenth time but he wasn't waking up. I was totally confused on what to do. A part of his head was bleeding out small quantity of blood

The siren was now approaching very fast. It came into view and an ambulance zoomed past us at an emergency acceleration

I remembered the tactics Hadampson, the security guy at Richton Hotel said he used at reviving me when I was in a similar situation weeks ago and decided to try it on Jide

I reached for my bag and got hold of my own plastic Coke. I poured all of it on his face and followed it with a heavy slap on his cheek

He regained consciousness and started coughing

"you this pathetic fainter!"

He sat upright and surveyed the area

"what happened? Where are those guys?" He enquired wiping the Coke off his face

"you have me to thank for saving your fainted ass idiot" I replied smiling

"you? What! How?"

"well, I gave them the fight you offered them before you fainted. Its hard to believe but Jide," I stopped and dragged him up to his feet "I beat the 3 of them single handedly." I stated with emphasis on the last two words

He was sceptical at first but easily believed when I showed him the blood stains on my hand and shirt. But oblivious to him was the fact that It was his own blood

We trekked down to a nearby pharmacy where Jide's bleeding head was stopped with a styptic bandage

I paid the pharmacist and we headed down the road

We were both tired and hungry but we managed to hobble down the tarred road to a T.junction where we took a bike to our destination

According to the bikeman that took us to my daddy's uncle house, he was generally known as Mr Ifa (Mr Oracle) throughout the whole of suburb of Lanlate

We alighted at the front of Mr Ifa's house at exactly 5pm in the evening feeling very tired and exhausted

We met his absence but his youngest daughter and 2nd wife was around to welcome us

With the hospitality we received from his petite daughter, I was able to have the surmise that they were quite happy to see me and my friend

Bukky the youngest daughter showed us to the guest room where Jide and I stayed throughout our visit

"bro Darous, what should we prepare for you and your friend?" Bukky asked me after handing the key of the room to me

"hmmmm, you can prepare Eba and vegetable soup for me," I paused and glanced at Jide who seems to still be surveying the room. "and get my friend here a bowl of hot pap and slice bread".

Jide turned swiftly. "what! Don't mind him o, get me whatever he's taking". He said with a serious tone

"thought you said you are allergic to heavy foods". I said teasingly

"you dey craze, when did I tell you that? Please no mind him o, prepare the same thing for us". He said sitting down on the bed

Bukky smiled and exited the room

I glanced at Jide and saw him licking his lips at the teenage body of my cousin

"hey guy! Eyes off! What are you staring at? Idiot...you dey eye my cousin? Take time o".

We rambled on for some moments before we got tired

An hour and a half later a sumptuous meal of eba and vegetable soup with plenty of bush meat was prepared for us

We escorted the delicious food down to the secondary grinding department of our digestive factory with a sweet, fresh and chilled palm wine

I was relaxing on the bed and playing Dream league on my phone while Jide was already asleep when my phone rang

I minimize the game and picked it
"how you dear?" I spoke softly into the mouthpiece after checking the caller I.d to be Joke

"my love, what happen? Have been calling your number since morning and it was switched off. Everything alright?" She said with a strained voice

I lied to her that my phone was dead since the last time she called me in the car and just got to charge it when we arrived. We ended the call after a prolonged amorous conversation

Mr Ifa arrived very hammered around 10pm on that Tuesday. After the consentual greetings, I escorted him to his room and after seeing the teeming charms of tortoise shells and cowrie in the room, I explained to him in full details of my reason for coming to seek his help

He promised to solve the situation as soon as thursday

On wednesday, he gave me a small bottle containing honey and some mixed concortions, with the instruction that I should be licking it 3times every 7hours till friday

I repeated the same process on thursday and nothing happened. Jide and I spent most of the evening of each day under a mango tree playing draught with elderly people

Friday arrived in its typical way. I was seriously worried about what might happen to me if the jinx with Adedoyin was not broken.

Around 6pm, Mr Ifa gave me another talisman of luck to wear around my neck. He assured me that nothing will happen to me

What was now left for me was to confirm whether the jinx of death has been broken or not

At 8pm, without informing Jide or anybody, I asked a bikeman to take me to the nearest brothel in the city of Lanlate

The bikeman dropped me at the very hub of the city where the big brothel was situated. I paid him off and headed inside. I went straight to the barman and ordered for 3 Goldbergs. I told him to find me the hottest olosho among their ladies and gave him some tips for that. He promised to get the best for me

I located a seat adjacent the plasma T.v that was showing a porn video and settled in it

I was on the 3rd bottle of goldberg when the barman came to me and gave me the room number of my request. ROOM 5

I quickly gulped down the remaining drinks and marched straight towards the coloured lit passage and located Room 5

I pushed the door slightly without knocking and it opened slowly

I stepped inside the dimly lit room with nak3d wallpapers hanging across the wall and was totally astounded by the lady lying on the bed at one corner of the small room
