A Ghanaian -American A&E doctor told a patient suffering from multiple sclerosis that having sex would help her condition, telling her, ‘trust me, I’m a doctor’, a tribunal heard.

Married Dr Kwame Somuah-Boateng began an affair with the woman after telling her sex would help her ‘regain the feelings in her vagina’, the medical tribunal was told.

The 43-year-old urologist even told the patient, aged in her 30s, he wanted to marry her and have a son with her – before she discovered he already had a wife and two daughters, she said.

At the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service, the woman, identified only as Patient A, opened up about the six-month affair, which started in July 2012 when he comforted her at Croydon University Hospital.

She said: ‘If I had known that what was happening to me was something dreadful, that something dreadful had happened to me I would have had the police at my door.

‘He told me sex was good for my condition numerous times. Initially I thought that it was going to help me get my feelings back, I just wanted to be normal again.

‘I thought, ‘wow isn’t it great to have your own personal doctor looking after you’. Now I feel like I was groomed into a relationship with this man.’

Patient A said she wanted to have sex with him while falsely believing it helped her condition, and they slept together in the hospital’s sleeping quarters.
She added: ‘He said that having sex would help my MS in terms of getting feeling back so it was the right think to do.

‘The first time I had sex with Kwame he said to me, “trust me I’m a doctor – it will help you to get your sensitivity back”.
‘I felt dependent on him. He began to tell me, “I love you, I want to marry you, I want to have children with you”.’

When the woman thought she was pregnant, the doctor warned her his wife would kill the baby, she claimed.
She added that she discovered he had been lying to her at a subsequent appointment for her MS.

Somuah-Boetang of Mitcham, Surrey, denies initiating contact with her, claiming she contacted him and asked for the sexual contact.

In 2015 he stood trial for attempted rape and assault by penetration at Croydon Crown Court, but was cleared by a jury.
