It may seem to you that they are iredeemable. Brother, all is not lost. Before the Southerns had education, I am sure some missionaries propably thought the same of us.
Today, we have scientists, doctors, physcists etc, we even manage to produce a Nobel winner.
How can an uneducated man realize that he has a problem? From which angle would he diagnose his problem?

Would you discuss Keynesian theory with Suya man? Or genetics with the Mei guard?
These are far too complex for him to understand for now, but subject the same man to an academic environment, stimulate his mind.
Voila! The same man will now be discussing space technology with you. Such is the mind of man.
Help must come to the dying man because he cannot help himself.

Can you discuss these with an illiterate onitsha or aba trader yet he makes sure his children go to school.

If you read thru all i said, i never said all hope is lost . . . however, till the northerners wanna be helped, no one can help.
You can only force a horse to the river, but cant force the horse to drink the water.
Ihave never been an advocate of "divide Nigeria" cos i truly believe, we can find a way forward.

better go and face the reality that there is a long way to go before anybody starts helping anybody in Nigeria.

@eyesonyou,
good points, i must add that our biggest problem is leadership. i cant imagine why the northern governors fail to have a 3 point agenda focusing on education, agriculture and solid minerals.

Because, they are too busy decieving thier own people, stealing money and praying that JTF will wipe out everybody in the ND. To hell with them, as they say, God fends for the tailess cow. The Northern leaders are running their ship aground without outside help.

I wonder why myself. The Northern governors are part of the elite that want to subjugate their people.  The more people are repressed the more the
governors can cart away.
You know a lowly subject innately believes that elites are superior in some form?
Take slavery for instance, it was perpetuated for 400 years or more because Africans were uneducated at that time.
And education was forbidden for African slaves in the US; so, slave masters continue to perpetuate his evil ways with impunity.

We must all join hands together. North South to free fellow Nigerians from bondage.

No you cannot discuss those topics with an illiterate in the South as well.  Most illiterates in the South are illiterates not because there
is an oppressive system in place to keep him that way but due to some unforeseen circumstances.

The illiterates in the South longs to read but regretfully cannot do so because of events beyond his control.
He values education and want to ensuire that his offsprings do not suffer the same fate, so he sends them to school like you rightly said.

While the two illiterates (North, South) appear to be similar but they are so disparate in thought process.

^ then what is the point of trying i guess , why not dump them behind ?
@asha and eyesonyou, you seem to understand what i'm driving at. While a poor illiterate from another part of Nigeria is hustling hard so he can realise his dream of becoming a doctor or lawyer through his son or daughter, hausa man is bringing more illiterates worse than himself into the world and sending them to islamic school. Come and see mai guards and kolanut sellers with 3 wives and 13 children with plans to divorce the eldest wife and marry another 12 year old, how can you develop such an entity ?
See how every one was quick to condemn the evil treatment the so called witch children of Akwaibom faced, now compare that to how their governors and even the present minister of state of education are defending almajiri culture and tell me if they have a functioning society ?
Re: Is It Possible For Hausa People To Advance ? by heilige(m): 8:25am On Jan 18, 2010
They can only if and only if we re-intergrate them, educate them on relation with people from other tribes and relegion.
I borrow a quote from baba iyabo. "U cannot bend a crayfish". That is to say. Hausa man can not advance.
Re: Is It Possible For Hausa People To Advance ? by edoyad(m): 8:38am On Jan 18, 2010
We should not let this matter die like that. There must be a reform- i believe they are the ones also reforming banks at the moment- to ensure that there are no more almajiris and that they must also go to school. Imagine after investing hundreds of thousands and millions in training your children for them to be killed by one stark illiterate, religiously bigoted person who your dog lives better than. I cannot accept that.
Re: Is It Possible For Hausa People To Advance ? by citizenY(m): 9:44am On Jan 18, 2010
Mr. Edoyad,

Facts are sacred and there is no point belabouring the issue of low education in the north. In the same vein,
as i have always believed, the fault is entirely that of our elite in all domains. While efforts are being made, I
am not satisfied with the speed and depth/spread. Ditto for other social aspects of northern society which ,whether
we like it or not ,must be reformed and you must admit that these fundamental changes take time and it is also a fact
that our society is not what it was 20 years ago.I want to suppose that your post is aimed at correction. Please continue
with your crusade as it will make our leaders sit up and do the right thing.

Having said that, we all know the cave from whence we came and when the chips are down, we will realise that the distance
from there to where we are to day is not that far. The foundation of where we are today was laid by institutions and persons,
whose level of enlightenment is a far cry from ours and that is progress. You know what I mean? If you do not know, go home
and ask your chefs who are wearing turbans.

Please say hello to your dog.

It's absolutely impossible, it's not part of their make up. The North is basically lucky to be part of Nigeria. Without Nigeria, the North is nothing but another Chad or Niger republic.

^ atleast we know Niger is poor because of adversity as a landlocked and being virtually a desert. But what excuse does the hausa man have ? Abacha ruled till he died between the thighs of a ho.oker and now Yaradua is in power but still the poverty and illiteracy level keep increasing at a frightening rate. Every year thousands of corps members are sent to these areas but the story is still the same, the level of literacy keeps dropping while population is increasing. The one annoying thing i can't understand is why a baby who should be with his mother is sent out with plastic cups to beg for alms to survive in the name of religion, are they the only muslims in the world ? Don't Tunisia and Ghana have muslims too ? And then their elite still have the gall to come out and defend the crap that keeps churning out a myriad of futureless, illiterate bigots.
@citizen Y i don't understand the crap you're saying but i nobody even slightly related to me has ever and will ever grow up on the street begging , can you say so of yourself ?
Re: Is It Possible For Hausa People To Advance ? by sjeezy8: 8:42pm On Jan 18, 2010

edoyad or whatever your name is, you really have serious ego problems and i feel sorry for you. You have been trying for the past two days to portray yourself as better, more educated and richer than hausa people. Why do you have to try so hard to paint yourself as anything else but the skunk you are. Sadly for you, that bad smell you are trying so hard to wash off yourself is not going anywhere, it is natural so learn to live with it.

If by any chance, you happen to be better than anybody, then why try so hard to prove your point? it should be the other person trying to show he is better than you. So you think hausa cannot develop? Okay fine then let them live in their misery afterall you hate them so much.

By the way are you chongai or what? so you honestly think you can fit or be accepted by your "saviours" if you help them conquer the hausa people? well goodluck to you mr man, but please take a break and do some soul searching and take a long look at yourself in the mirror.

Why would you apologise to your natural enemies, you as well as i know There's no where on earth you can find a man who detests the hausa man as much southern kaduna. I was in school when your people tried the rubbish they're doing now jos around some southern kaduna towns which ended in General Lekwot and his people slaughtering you people like dogs you are- the only language you understand isn't it ?
To us you're just like the swine you profess not to eat(i guess it would be cannibalism for you to do so), we pork well in my place so you're no problem for us.

you are even worse than i thought, so you can defame your people just to achieve a personal objective. once again i have to ask you to search your soul (or what is left of it) and try to forgive yourself for wasting your life.

I have so many friends from southern kaduna and they are not like you, that is why i apologized.

If those southern kaduna "friends" of yours are stu.p¡d then i'm not. A relative of mine in 2000 thought his gateman who had been in that position for years was his friend until the riots came, i'm sure He's regretting that decision now in the heavens.
But don't get me wrong, there might be hope for your people if you choose to abandon ignorance and move into the modernity and I hope the tots in your extended family have been immunized against polio.

Again instead of answering questions asked, you choose to abuse your fellow citizens  to show the world you are better than everyone else.

edoyad you are right,

News flash: Wily Wily your brothers have released your hostages while you are busy making noise on nairaland. Have they paid you?

Abducted Britons and Colombian freed in Nigeria

Three Britons and a Colombian kidnapped a week ago in Nigeria's Delta region have been freed, police have said.

Gunmen snatched the group, who were working for oil giant Shell, near the city of Port Harcourt last Tuesday, killing a Nigerian guard.

A police spokeswoman told AFP news agency all four had been released and were "looking ok".

The oil-producing region is notorious for kidnappings by militants, who demand a greater share of its wealth.

But the Delta has been relatively calm since most major militant groups agreed to lay down their arms last year after the government offered an amnesty.

Shot dead

This is the first violent attack on foreigners in the region for many months.

The Nigerian gunmen snatched the four workers last Tuesday morning as they made their way to work at a power plant, police said.

Their police escort was shot dead and the driver was also believed to have been shot.
A police search in and around the town of Aba, some 30 miles (50km) north-east of Port Harcourt, followed.

At the time, Shell expressed concern for the safety of its contractor staff.

The Foreign Office said it was aware of the reports the men had been freed and it was making inquiries.
