The Oyo State Government is to generate 1,000 megawatts from wastes following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with some power-generating firms.

The state government on Wednesday in Ibadan signed an MoU with Siemens International, MRF1 and West African Energy on conversion of waste to energy.

Gov. Abiola Ajimobi said that the project would promote industrialisation and generate employment opportunities.

He said that the project was anchored on his administration’s developmental tripod of restoration, transformation and repositioning.

Ajimobi stated that the objective of the present effort was to uplift the state from its civil service status to an industrialised one.

“As part of our development agenda of restoration, transformation and repositioning, we have come up with an agreement with these power-generating firms which had culminated into today’s signing of MOU.

“These companies, Siemens, MRF1 and West African Energy, are well-known companies in electronics, energy and ICT.

“ The objectives of the project is to industrialise the state and create employment for the youths. “The power will be distributed across the zones in the state. We really want to take our youths off the street and get them fully employed,” he said.

Mr Nasir Giwa, the representative of Siemens International, said that the state on completion of the project would be the first to sell or export power to the national grid.

Giwa stated that the moment power was being generated in the state, many other developmental activities would naturally follow.

“We believe that power generation is a fulcrum of commercial growth. “ Once it is achieved, other things would naturally follow and Oyo State will be the first State to export power to the national grid,” he said. Also, Mrs Lolade Oresanwo, the representative of West African Energy, said that the project would create employment opportunities in the excess of 10,000.

“The success of this project is the importance of power to industrialisation. When there is power, there are more employment opportunities,” Oresanwo said.

Very ambitious but they should look at the feasibility. To generate 25MW of electricity from waste; you will need 400,000 tonnes of waste an hour to be fed into the system and This is using fluidized bed technology. Other technologies are less efficient and you get less energy. So imagine the amount of waste needed to generate 1000 MW. There is also competition for the suitable waste( waste with high calorific content) that the system needs. Plastics already being collected by pickers and used tyres. All they have left is organic waste and household waste which i doubt would be enough. Anyway lets watch and see

Is this true? If it is thats pretty surprising. I thought Egbin would been export all this time. Other than that seems like good news if these companies execute on this MOU. Fashola will be closer to his goals of 10k MW without much sweat.

I want to think that those involved in the project have done the requisite feasibility studies before arriving at the stated capacity. Also, bear in mind that in the last released report by an international organization, Waste Atlas (
http://www.atlas.d-waste.com/Documents/Waste-Atlas-report-2014-webEdition.pdf ), Ibadan alone was found to have two out of the largest waste dump sites in Africa (top 5), and also featured amongst the top 50 largest in the world -- for sometime now the city has produced increasing number of millionaires from amongst individuals operating within the waste management space. So it may indeed be feasible to generate that much energy from all that waste.

375,000 tonnes in place just enough for a hour's operation. Note that I said to generate 25 MW you need 400,000 tonnes an hour. Now compute what you need to keep the system working for a day.
They may need to import waste. They need to lower there generation projection. Even of you combine the Lapite site, it will still not be sufficient. Now if they bring in waste from Lagos then you'll be talking about something feasible!

Ekiti state can generate more than that if the waste coming out of Fayose's mouth can be judiciously utilised!
