The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, has set July 16 as deadline for stoppage of manual serving of processes and other forms of communication with legal practitioners in the country. Onnoghen gave the deadline during the formal presentation of the newly retrofitted Court and Legal Email, at the Supreme Court in Abuja yesterday. “I would like to implore judges and lawyers to join us on this quest for excellence by subscribing to, and acquiring the legal email, as manual forms of communication within the Nigerian courts will soon be phased out. “Hence, lawyers who have acquired the legal email can now communicate electronically with the courts and with each other. “However, by July 16, 2018, it becomes mandatory. The Supreme Court will only serve processes by electronic means and on all matters. “Hence, all new filling as from July 16, 2018 must bear counsel’s email address. “To ensure compliance, it is also imperative that all other heads of courts acquire the legal email addresses for their courts, especially for their litigation department staff.’’ “All courts are also encouraged to start using the email for serving lawyers. In addition, communication between the various judicial bodies will soon be through the official email system only,’’ the CJN said. According to him, the courts were bound to harness the benefits of the system in terms of confidentiality, integrity and availability. “I am delighted the email project illustrates how the justice system works better when the Bar and Bench work together to improve it. “From the inception of the email project, the committee, of which the president of Nigeria Bar Association is a member, worked in tandem with the Bar to ensure the successful completion of what we are witnessing today. “I trust that the Bar association will now drive the adoption so that the system will be fully operational within the period stipulated. “The quick adoption of the system will enable us move forward to implement and improve the other components that depend on it’’, Onnoghen said. The CJN further said the project was a milestone achieved in the quest to enhance justice delivery in the court. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/02/supreme-court-to-end-manual.html

The wife of IK Ogbonna Nigerian Nollywood actor Sonnia Ogbonna has revealed how she feels when she hears the word marriage. Sonnnia is not a Nigerian so she may hate the idea of marriage. She is originally named Sonnia Ogbonna Morales, she hails from Columbia. “Honestly, I have never liked the idea of marriage, I hated it cuz it seemed like a zone where we appreciate nothing and demand for everything just because, Even today I feel like the whole “marriage” thing is not there to serve us, but to serve society by impacting tones of norms that are meant to control us, lock us inside the box and decide what is wrong and right on our behalf. It took me time, tears, depression, endless arguments and literally madness to understand the purpose of two people coexisting together,” the DFNG ambassador wrote. She also said that her husband is the best as he has given her the freedom to be who she wants to be, she also took out time to thank him so much for baby-sitting her when she was just 23. She wrote “Many times I forgot to give credit to this man of mine for everything that he is. Do you know how difficult I am to handle? Strong minded woman with revolution on her mind 24/7. Lol, Average man’s pride can’t deal with me. Ever. I made many mistakes but the biggest one is not appreciating u every moment of my day. Thank you for babysitting me from the time I was barely 23. I know it’s not easy dealing with a savage like me that doesn’t like being tamed ”submissive” (I hate that bloody word) And freedom u gave me is the highest proof of love u have for me. Nothing is perfect about us, but at the end of the day we always remember to go back on the right track whenever we get lost. I love you Boss.” As a Nigerian woman you hate the idea of marriage then you should be ready to go to war with your parent most especially if you are the eldest child. I wonder why someone that hates the idea of marriage will be married. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/02/i-hate-marriage-says-sonnia-ogbonna.html

PUNCH Metro learned that Chigozie, also known as Akuchi, was arrested by operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and the Department of State Services on Saturday after weeks of surveillance. Senate President, Bukola Saraki’s warning to politicians not to overheat the polity and distract the government with their premature exertions on the 2019 general elections is timely and should be heeded by all patriots. Saraki issued the warning in an address to the Senate as it resumed last week. The admonition coincided with the release of the 2019 general elections timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The early release of the timetable by INEC is to help the electoral body focus on its own duties and begin early preparations for the polls. But, some of our politicians may have seen it as an invitation to begin jostling for power. Their deliberate attempts to obfuscate issues to gain political mileage may confuse the electorate, so it is good that the Senate President has issued this warning to ensure that all political office holders remain focused on the jobs for which they were elected. Every effort needs to be made to ensure that the government is not distracted from providing real governance and addressing the real issues of the day. Leaving room for distraction will be tragic, considering the myriad of challenges the country currently faces. In this regard, we notice the overt and subtle pressures already being mounted on President Muhammadu Buhari to run for another term less than three years into his first term in office. One would have expected that the pressure on him would be to rev up the machinery for the delivery of his 2015 electoral promises, instead of these unhelpful distractions with the talk of a second term in office. The build-up is real, hence the need for Saraki’s warning to legislators to focus on the legislative agenda and governance. In the last few weeks, some governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) paid a visit to the president, reportedly on the issue of his second term in office. Within the same period, a delegation of politicians from Kebbi State led by Abubakar Malami, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, was at the seat of power for the same purpose. The president has also been getting endorsements for his re-election from other people. This is definitely not an indication of our politicians’ good disposition to the electorate and their own responsibilities. The presidential election, going by the INEC timetable, is scheduled for February 2019, which is 13 months away. It is important at this juncture to remind politicians, especially public office holders, that their constitutional tenure of office is four years, and not three years or less. Nothing should be done, therefore, to abridge it. It is not only the ruling party that is guilty of attempting to beat the gun. Campaigns by political parties are only expected to commence by August this year, which is still seven months away, but already, the air is becoming thick with toxic political activities. There is no point naming parties, as most of the active ones are guilty. The bigger pain is that there may not be clear sanctions in our statute books for offenders. But, the principle here is more moral than legal. We expect all our current and aspiring political office holders to hold themselves to the highest moral and patriotic codes. This country has seen too many charlatans and free-wheelers in its long and chequered history. It is about time things changed for the better. There are still too many campaign promises unfulfilled for our leaders to distract themselves, or allow others to distract them, with 2019 electoral campaigns. The essence of Saraki’s warning is that the electors are watching and they are not fools. All politicians, especially the public office holders, are advised to concentrate on delivering on their mandates. They should demonstrate greater commitment to the discharge of the duties of their respective offices and strive to serve the collective interest of the nation. The electorate and INEC should be on the watch out for politicians who would try to jump the gun on the 2019 general election timetable. They should be sanctioned to safeguard the sanctity of the electoral timetable and ensure that the present crop of political office holders concentrate on their duties. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/01/breaking-sarakis-timely-warning-on-2019.html

Security agents have been issued presidential order to arrest and illegal bearers of arms. The directive was sequel to Thursday’s National Security Council meeting attended by President Muhammadu Buhari, Defence Minister Monsur Dan-Ali and the service chiefs. Giving an update on the meeting on his Twitter handle yesterday, Buhari said his government was “stepping up our efforts to tackle the proliferation of small arms and light weapons across the country.” “The security agencies already have standing instructions to arrest and prosecute anyone found with illegal arms,” he added. Sights of Fulani herdsmen going about with AK 47 and reports of their wanton killings of Nigerians have sparked outrage across the land. Benue State recently buried 73 victims of such attacks, followed by Taraba State where scores of people were also killed. Buhari’s government has been widely criticised for looking the other way while herdsmen went on the rampage. However, the Minister of Defence, Dan-Ali, emerging from Thursday’s NSC meeting, told reporters that the killings in parts of the country could not be blamed solely on herdsmen, because according to him, “there are also militias who also carry arms.” He added: “Some people were caught with arms and they call themselves Forest Guards or whatever with AK47. “There is nowhere in this country where arms are allowed to be carried apart from legitimate security forces. So, anybody carrying any arm is doing so illegally.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/01/buhari-orders-clamp-down-on-illegal.html

Describing his encounter with the operatives, Muiz said: “I was pulling the generator’s starter when the policemen grabbed my trousers and asked me to enter the bus. Before I knew what was going on, two of the officers started slapping me. They took me away with some other people I didn’t know. They were moving round the area, picking up people. They wore black shirts with ‘FSARS’ boldly written on them.” There was wailing on Ajenifuja Street yesterday when Mrs Adeyanju’s body was brought back home. Sympathisers rained curses on the operatives, describing FSARS as “evil organisation”. Some residents complained that the operatives had been coming to the area for “illegal raids and indiscriminate arrests”. At her wife’s funeral performed by some Islamic clerics, Mr Adeyanju, 43, was all tears. He described his wife’s death as “devastating agony”, wondering what his son’s offence was to warrant his arrest by the FSARS. Mr Adeyanju said: “I returned from work around 9pm, after which my wife served my food. After the dinner, I performed ablution to observe the prayers I missed. I was in the middle of the prayers when there was power outage. My wife instructed Muiz to start the generator in front of the house. “The boy was arrested by FSARS when he was about to put on the set. I overheard one of my neighbours, Mr Emmanuel, telling the policemen that the boy lives in the house. I had to break the prayers to attend to the situation. Before I got to the scene, the police van had left the spot. We ran after them but we didn’t see them. “I was returning home to take my car and search for the police van when I saw my wife at the street junction, gasping. People around rushed her to a hospital. I joined neighbours in search for the police van. We met the FSARS officers at a junction in Ilupeju and I explained to them my wife had collapsed because of my son’s arrest. That was when they released the boy to us. We had barely left that scene when I got a call that my wife had died.” The deceased’s elder sister, Mrs Fausat Usman, described her as ‘’a quiet and cool-headed woman”. She confirmed that the late Mrs Adeyanju was hypertensive. Police spokesman Chike Oti, a Superintendent (SP), did not pick this reporter’s calls. He cut the call after his phone persistently rang last night. He did not also respond to messages sent to his phone. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/01/woman-slumps-to-death-after-sars.html

Human rights Lawyer, Femi Falana has reacted to ex-president, Olusegun Obasanjo’s lengthy letter to President Buhari on Tuesday. Obasanjo, in a 13-page statement, criticized Buhari and urged him to bury any plans of recontesting in 2019. Falana believes that the letter is a Clarion Call to the president, advising him to act promptly against the influence of the Cabal. He pointed out; “President Olusegun Obasanjo’s intervention is a vivid expression of the frustration of the Nigerian people with the Buhari administration. The statement is a clarion call on President Buhari to remove the incompetent and corrupt cabal of power mongers that has hijacked political power from him. Through sheer nepotism and cronyism, the regime has lost the massive goodwill that heralded it to power. The success recorded in the fight against insurgency in the northeast zone has been eroded in the wave of kidnapping and reckless killing of unarmed Nigerians by AK47-bearing herdsmen. The success of the fight against corruption and impunity has been rubbished by the inability of the regime to remove corrupt public officers. President Obasanjo’s challenge has been taken up by many Nigerians who have already formed a coalition of genuine progressive forces to liberate Nigeria from internal colonialism and imperialist control.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/01/shocker-femi-falana-reacts-to-obasanjos.html

Catholic Archbishop of Abuja diocese, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, on Tuesday called on government at all levels to strive to eliminate impunity in the handling of its affairs. This, he said, would be a pragmatic way of encouraging the teaching and practice of ethical values in the country. Onaiyekan made the call while addressing the media on the issue of “Peace, Attitudinal Change, and Change Agenda” in Abuja on Tuesday. The clergyman said the teaching of ethics will be extremely difficult in a society where evil-doing was not only ignored but seemed to be encouraged by political leaders. He also said religious institutions had a role to play but lamented the situation where the government abdicates its responsibility in the guise of maintaining religious neutral when certain ills are plaguing the society. He said: “There is a role for the state to play (in the teaching of ethics). If the state does not play its role, it becomes very difficult for others to do so. A situation where not only evil-doing is not only ignored but seems to be even encouraged makes teaching of ethics extremely difficult. “As a religious leader, we have often heard the young ones saying ‘All they are saying is very good, very right; but out there, a different rule is operating.’ When I was a young boy, we were told honesty is the best policy, and we believed it because we saw it. We saw that honest people went well and we also saw dishonest people disgraced. But, when I look at my nephews now, they are seeing dishonest people just getting on, and they are seeing honest people just left where they are. This leaves us with an amoral set-up, a kind of situation where morality does not seem attractive again.” “The religious institutions and the state have equal roles to play. What makes it a bit more complicated in Nigeria is that; we are, generally, Christians and Muslims in this country. Therefore, when government comes into the picture it does wants to abdicate its responsibility in the name of neutrality. “But I tell anybody in government, ‘Listen, what is not good is not good it has nothing to do with religion. We all know it is bad to be dishonest, we all know it is bad to be deceiving people.’ This we must work on. If there is a little bit more in that regard, it is that the structures of state should work in such a way that impunity is reduced to the minimum and good rules are made and enforced. Then it is easier for religious bodies to play their part.” Please Read More Here: http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/01/why-government-must-operate-without.html

•Ex-president writes off APC, PDP •PDP rejects third force Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday advised President Muhammadu Buhari not to run for a second term. He accused the President of nepotism, having a poor understanding of politics and engaging in blame games rather than accepting responsibility for his failure. Obasanjo said he worked against his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to help the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Buhari win the last presidential election. But, the situation that made Nigerians to vote massively for Buhari, he said, is playing itself out again. The former President, who recently bagged a doctorate degree in Christian Theology from the National Open University (NOUN), issued a “Special Press Statement”, titled: The way out: A clarion call for Coalition for Nigeria Movement, which he gave the media in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. Obasanjo said: “The lice of poor performance in government – poverty, insecurity, poor economic management, nepotism, gross dereliction of duty, condoning of misdeed – If not outright encouragement of it; lack of progress and hope for the future, lack of national cohesion and poor management of internal political dynamics and widening inequality – are very much with us today.” “With such lice of general and specific poor performance and crying poverty with us, our fingers will not be dry of ‘blood’,” Obasanjo said. The former President urged Buhari not to run for a second term, saying the President needs “a dignified dismount from the horse”. “Whatever may be the state of President Buhari’s health today, he should neither over-push his luck nor over-tax the patience and tolerance of Nigerians for him, no matter what his self-serving, so-called advisers, who would claim that they love him more than God loves him and that without him, there would be no Nigeria say. “President Buhari needs a dignified and honourable dismount from the horse. He needs to have time to reflect, refurbish physically and recoup and after appropriate rest, once again, join the stock of Nigerian leaders whose experience, influence, wisdom and outreach can be deployed on the side line for the good of the country.” Obasanjo said Buhari should consider taking a deserved rest, considering his age. “His place in history is already assured. Without impaired health and strain of age, running the affairs of Nigeria is a 25/7 affair, not 24/7…I only appeal to brother Buhari to consider a deserved rest at this point in time and at this age. I continue to wish him robust health to enjoy his retirement from active public service. “President Buhari does not necessarily need to heed my advice. But whether or not he heeds it, Nigeria needs to move on and move forward,” he said. Obasanjo believes neither the APC nor the PDP can rescue Nigeria, adding that both parties were “wobbling”. “I have had occasion in the past to say that the two main political parties – APC and PDP – were wobbling. I must reiterate that nothing has happened to convince me otherwise. If anything, I am reinforced in my conviction. “If neither APC nor PDP is a worthy horse to ride to lead Nigeria at this crucial and critical time, what then do we do? “We cannot just sit down lamenting and wringing our hands desperately and hopelessly,” he said. Obasanjo slammed the PDP, saying it was nothing to “write home about”. He proposed what he called a Coalition for Nigeria (CN), which he described as a movement that would “drive Nigeria up and forward” and give hope and future to all youth and dignity and full participation to all women. “We need a Coalition for Nigeria, CN. Such a movement at this juncture needs not be a political party but one to which all well-meaning Nigerians can belong. That movement must be a coalition for democracy, good governance, social and economic well-being and progress; a coalition to salvage and redeem our country,” he said. Obasanjo dismissed PDP as a better alternative. “What has emerged from the opposition has shown no better promise from their antecedents. As the leader of that party for eight years as President of Nigeria, I can categorically say there is nothing to write home about in their new team. “We have only one choice left to take us out of Egypt to the Promised Land. And that is the coalition of the concerned and the willing – ready for positive and drastic change, progress and involvement,” he said. ”You can count me with such a Movement. Last time, we asked, prayed and worked for change and God granted our request. This time, we must ask, pray and work for change with unity, security and progress. And God will again grant us,” he said. Obasanjo said having quit partisan politics, he would not support any candidate should the coalition eventually decide to back someone. “Of course, nothing should stop such a Movement from satisfying conditions for fielding candidates for elections. But if at any stage the Movement wishes to metamorphose into candidate-sponsoring Movement for elections, I will bow out of the Movement because I will continue to maintain my non-partisan position. Coalition for Nigeria must have its headquarters in Abuja,” he said. Obasanjo criticised the APC government over what he called serious allegations of round-tripping against some “inner caucus” of the Presidency “which would seem to have been condoned”. “I wonder if such actions do not amount to corruption and financial crime, then what is it? Culture of condonation (sic) and turning blind eye will cover up rather than clean up. And going to justice must be with clean hands,” he said. He said while Buhari must be given “some credit” for his successes in his fight against corruption and insurgency, “it is not yet uhuru!” Obasanjo spanked some governors endorsing Buhari for second term on the day that victims of Benue State killings were buried. “The herdsmen/crop farmers issue is being wittingly or unwittingly allowed to turn sour and messy. It is no credit to the Federal Government that the herdsmen rampage continues with careless abandon and without finding an effective solution to it. “And it is a sad symptom of insensitivity and callousness that some governors, a day after 73 victims were being buried in a mass grave in Benue State without condolence, were jubilantly endorsing President Buhari for a second term! The timing was most unfortunate. “The issue of herdsmen/crop farmers dichotomy should not be left on the political platform of blame game; the Federal Government must take the lead in bringing about solution that protects life and properties of herdsmen and crop farmers alike and for them to live amicably in the same community,” he said. The former President highlighted three areas he thinks Buhari has failed, including the reinstatement of former chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina. “One is nepotic (sic) deployment bordering on clannishness and inability to bring discipline to bear on errant members of his nepotic court. This has grave consequences on performance of his government to the detriment of the nation. It would appear that national interest was being sacrificed on the altar of nepotic interest. “What does one make of a case like that of Maina: collusion, condonation, ineptitude, and incompetence, dereliction of responsibility or kinship and friendship on the part of those who should have taken visible and deterrent disciplinary action? How many similar cases are buried, ignored or covered up and not yet in the glare of the media and the public? “The second is his poor understanding of the dynamics of internal politics. This has led to wittingly or unwittingly making the nation more divided and inequality has widened and become more pronounced. It also has effect on general national security. “The third is passing the buck. For instance, blaming the Governor of the Central Bank for devaluation of the naira by 70 per cent or so and blaming past governments for it is to say the least, not accepting one’s own responsibility. “Let nobody deceive us, economy feeds on politics and because our politics is depressing, our economy is even more depressing today. If things were good, President Buhari would not need to come in. He was voted to fix things that were bad and not engage in the blame game. “Our Constitution is very clear; one of the cardinal responsibilities of the President is the management of the economy of which the value of the naira forms an integral part. Kinship and friendship that place responsibility for governance in the hands of the unelected can only be deleterious to good government and to the nation,” Obasanjo said. The former president said his intervention was in Nigeria’s interest. “Some may ask, what does Obasanjo want again? Obasanjo has wanted nothing other than the best for Nigeria and Nigerians and he will continue to want nothing less,” he said. UBS believes that bitcoin is a speculative investment and is not advising its clients to invest in the digital currency, the bank’s chairman told CNBC Tuesday. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, UBS Chairman Axel Weber said the bank makes a clear distinction between institutional and retail clients when it comes to investing in bitcoin. “We do make that distinction, there’s institutional clients and if they want to invest in (bitcoin) — they are grown-ups, I mean they know what they are doing, they have the capability of judging this risk — and if they ask us to help them access, to enter these markets, we need to look at that differently than retail clients,” Weber told CNBC. “Retail clients, who don’t fully understand these products should be protected from going into these products, because if there is a retail client affected in the future, the question will be again who was the bank that sold them these products and then banks will be blamed again for what has happened,” Weber said in reference to some banks being criticized for selling complicated financial products prior to the global financial crisis without explaining them in full. Weber warned that “clearly with bitcoin, this is a speculative investment; I don’t call it currency and retail clients do not have the risk bearing capacity nor the knowledge to invest in that.” Though UBS allows institutional clients to trade bitcoin, Weber made it clear that “this is not an investment we would advise.” Please Read More Here: http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/01/bitcoin-is-speculative-investment-ubs.html
