I'm breaking my self imposed exile from Politicas Section of Nairaland, to save myself the embarrassment of a ban just because I hold a different view from Moderators and Almighty Seun, but this is my candid opinion, my 2 kobo.

Its time Nigerians ( Nairalanders) start facing reality, yes coups maybe unfashionable but do you really think that the market woman would lock up her shop and go naked, the unemployed graduates call on holy ghost fire to come down  because some khaki boys kicked PDP out of office? Do you think that the man who spends days waithing at fuel stations for diesel and kerozine would protest? I don't think so! I spending a lot more time in Port Harcourt, I know for sure that there is so much apathy ( Anger, Hate) towards PDP, Yar Adua, Amaechi and politicians in general.

I say this with all sincerity, that there would celebration on the streets of Port Harcourt if PDP (Yar Adua + Jonathan+ Amaechi) are kicked out, its easy to stay in London, New York or Paris and declare that Nigerians would not welcome a Coup. Yar Adua, PDP and coups were up for discussion on Wednesday night after Chelsea vs Inter, believe if you want to but most "Pitakwa" residents would not march protesting Khaki boys.

24 FEBRUARY COUP REHEARSALS: SACK THE SERVICE CHIEFS NOW.

“The powers of the President as the Commissioner-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federation shall include power to determine the operational use of the armed forces of the Federation” Section 218(1) 1999 Constitution.

It is no longer news that Alhaji Umaru Yaradua has been smuggled into Nigeria in the middle of the night like some contraband goods. A lot has also been said on the unceremonious arrival of his entourage without the knowledge of the Acting President and Commander in Chief of the armed forces of Nigeria, Jonathan Goodluck.

However, some Nigerians have missed the crux of the matter in this perfidious soap opera currently playing out in the country. Despite all the rumours about possible military coup in late January this year, the night of Febuary 24 was the day; the armed forces actually executed a flawless dress rehearsal for any future coup.

According to a Newspaper report, “Two army units, the 4th battalion and Guards brigade, were deployed to secure the road leading to the airport and escort the presidential convoy back to Aso Rock. 300 carefully selected officers were secretly deployed and conveyed in 25 vehicles for the operation. Even the weapons were released to them at night. The directive for this deployment was not issued by the Acting President who is also the present commander in chief of the armed forces of Nigeria. This caused a little pandemonium among the ruling class who wondered who deployed the men. The Acting President did not give orders for the deployment of the troops”.

This surprise move against the Acting President has also been confirmed by his aide, Oronto Douglas, who stated that the Acting President was not briefed about Yaradua’s nocturnal arrival.

A necessary question that follows then is “if the president did not authorise the operation, who did?  What would have happened if these nocturnal soldiers changed their mind from rallying behind an unconscious Yaradua and decided to take power for themselves? Would that have been the end of the fifteen year struggle by heroic Nigerians like the Kutis, Gani, Kaltho, Kudirat, Ubani, Anyanwu and others, to rescue Nigeria from the jackboot of military dictatorship?

The foregoing should worry every Nigerian, because it boldly exemplifies an insubordinate and partisan military that lack respect to our democratic ethos and institutions. The constitution subjected the armed forces to the command of the president, who has the final say on their operational use, as could be read from Section 218. The supremacy of the presidential command is further buttressed in Paragraph1, part 1 of the third Schedule of the 1999 constitution, which created the national defence council chaired by the President, other members of the council includes the Vice president, Minister of defence, chief of defence staff, chief of army staff, chief of naval staff and the chief of air staff. The constitution made it clear that the council had only advisory powers to the president in matters relating to the defence of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria.

More so, Section 8 of the Armed Forces Act in consonance with the constitution equally vests solely on the president power to determine the operational use of the armed forces.

It is clear from this provisions that the acts of the armed forces on 24 February amounted to a lethal disrespect to the constitution. Since the volatile nature of the armed forces may not permit immediate investigation into what actually happened on 24 of February, the Acting President will do our democracy a favour by ordering their compulsory retirement as a first step in returning public confidence in the political neutrality of our armed forces.

I have followed closely most postings here and see the typical "Nigerianess" running through. Everytime someone throws up an idea, the usual response is "It can't happen here". Please spare me.
If anyone had said Turai would run this country 2 years ago, the response would have been the usual Nigerian reply "It can't happen here".
In Anambra, the government house was burned down and a sitting Governor removed by an erstwhile unknown God Father. If someone had postulated that thought before the incident, we would have heard "It can't happen here".
Fellow countrymen, we live in a society where everyone is looking for opportunities to increase their daily food intake.
If a coup should happen now, the first thing is for individuals / groups to weigh the options. If they are favoured, they will support the coup. If they feel marginalised, they will complain.
A coup can happen in Nigeria. Who will stop it? Our defenceless civilians?
Do we expect a 2001 graduate who is still unemployed to go and defend democracy?
Just this week, some military leaders were picked up in Turkey.
Anything can happen anywhere.
We lack a unified spirit of patrotism needed to counter any threat to our democractic structures.
As it has always been in Nigeria, it has always been Everyman for himself, God for us all.
Until that changes, we remain open and vulnerable.

Just my thoughts

I think the silence of the poster really means something and for him to tell us about an impending coup, that means he probably wants the right authority to wake up and fight for democracy, *my personal opinion*

Judging from recent events in Nigeria and other WEST AFRICAN countries, i don't think a coup is off the cards.
Goodluck jonathan can save Nigeria in 7 days or destroy it if he choose to.
This is NAIJA. I keep my fingaz crossed.

Wow, I lost my train of thought lol. Saw your avatar  wink anyway, why all the anger and lust for war/bloodshed? Just oppose peacefully. Africa doesn't need the killing/ bickering anymore it's time for you all to elevate and set the example, Africa is far too blessed and beautiful to be waging war all of the time.  undecided

I have a dream that one day, down in the North, with its vicious racists, with her governors having lips dripping with the words of "interposition" and "nullification" -- one day right there in the North little Yoruba boys and Hausa girls will be able to join hands with little Igbo boys and South South girls as sisters and brothers.

Go back to Imo, go back to Lagos, go back to Abuja, go back to Jos, go back to Rivers State go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed.

There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" We can never be satisfied as long as the average Nigerian is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality and Politician's day light robbery of their rights and future.

I call upon Nigerians to stand up, take arms, swords and whatever they can lay hands on and fight for their lives, fight for your children and fight for your future. Kill every corrupt senator, members of the house of representative and most especially the Kitchen cabinet and Executives and Northern Cabal. angry angry angry angry angry

GOD BLESS NIGERIA

Re: Military Coup In Nigeria [[Attempted Rumor]] by Nobody: 9:25pm On Feb 27, 2010
Nairalanders, seriously the topic of disucssion seems like a joke, its sort of unacceptable but if you'll take several factors into consideration then you'll probably sense its possibility in a country like Nigeria. Firstly, the situation of Nigeria's administration/politics is nothing to be happy with because it doesn't portray the PROPAGANDA of one Nigeria. Its as if a political class is clinging onto power and that class is mainly the Northerners, they have been dominating the politics and people from the EAST are not even allowed into seat of power and now that a person from the SOUTH is there, they seem bothered about it. In a nutshell people, Nigeria isn't practising TRUE democracy and nothing is working,  the constitution isn't being respected, no rule of law, nothing,  And you all will agree with me that Military intervention in African politics is re-surfacing, E.G Niger, Guinea, Madagascar, Mauritania, Central African Republic etc. And according to Claude Ake in his book, the reason for military intervention in African politics are /over-valuing of office and personalization of power (for personal gains)/ which are eminent in Africa/Nigeria's politics. Conclusively, it seems impossible for Nigeria to escape from the COUP wateva,  sooner or later it will happen except there is a quick change in the way things are done.

On point (in bold), I totally agree with you.  That is the issue that no one will address.

If the beating of a civilian that took place by navy officers two years ago is anything to go by,  do any of you seriously think that the military in Nigeria have the best interests of the nation at heart?
