SA, DRC sign Grand Inga project treaty

30 October 2013
South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Tuesday signed a crucial treaty on the Grand Inga hydropower project, which could eventually become the largest hydroelectric project in the world, with the potential to power half of the continent.

President Jacob Zuma made the announcement earlier on Tuesday while addressing the Parliament of the DRC, where is arrived, accompanied by a strong ministerial and business delegation, for a two-day state visit on Tuesday.
Zuma said that the signing treaty was a major step towards the realisation of the long-cherished dream of the people of the DRC.
"I must convey how particularly pleased and excited I am by the progress taking place towards the realisation of the Grand Inga Hydropower Project. This incredible feat of human ingenuity, when completed, will have the capacity to power Africa and indeed to export electricity beyond the continent."
The Grand Inga project will seek to harness the power potential of the Congo River, sub-Saharan Africa's greatest waterway.
"South Africa is extremely proud to be working so closely with the DRC in realising this accomplishment," Zuma said. "This represents one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken on the African continent, and one which will long be a resounding symbol of the rise of Africa and her people."

SA 'ready to share experience with DRC'

Zuma said South Africa stood ready to share its experiences and expertise in helping the DRC to further strengthen and deepen their democracy as well as to further entrench their impressive commitment to human rights.
"We look forward to extending and deepening the close relations between our two great nations. We can do this across the many areas of shared interest, and in pursuit of a better future for our two great nations and peoples.
"In the spirit of ubuntu, which means 'I am because we are', and which is a core principle underpinning the work of the South African government, we will continue to stand side by side with the DRC.
"We will work together in seeing this great nation assume its rightful place as a fellow powerhouse of the African continent."
He added that South Africa would forever be grateful for the solidarity it had received from the Congolese people during the country's liberation struggle.

Concern over conflict in eastern DRC

Zuma said it has always been South Africa's firm belief that in order to overcome poverty and to achieve prosperity through development, it was imperative that the essential preconditions of peace, security, and stability were first put in place.
He said South Africa remained deeply concerned by the enduring conflict in eastern DRC, perpetrated by local and externally supported armed groups on innocent Congolese civilians, and stood in solidarity with the DRC in overcoming this serious challenge.
"We deplore the devastating loss of life, the human suffering, the displacement of more than a million civilians and the damage to property which this intolerable situation has resulted in. I extend the deepest sympathy of the people of South Africa to the Congolese people for the hardship they continue to endure as a result of this conflict."
Zuma commended the government of the DRC on its efforts in the Kampala talks aimed at ending the conflict. "Together, we united in sending the message that for too long have the people of the DRC endured the incalculable suffering as a result of recurrent cycles of conflict.
"Enough is enough. The time for peace is now, and to those who would challenge this for their own self-interests, we stand firm in the message that your time is now up, lay down your arms, as no longer will the misery you inflict be tolerated."
Angola-DRC-SA Tripartite mechanism meets
Meanwhile, ahead of Zuma's visit, International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane joined other senior officials at the 1st Session of the Ministerial Meeting of the Angola-DRC-South Africa Tripartite Mechanism on Dialogue and Cooperation.
Nkoana-Mashabane said critical decisions had been made on the implementation of the tripartite mechanism.
"We have rededicated ourselves to make this unique mechanism a success," she said. "We have agreed to work towards the operationalisation of the permanent secretariat, and we have committed ourselves to speed up the ratification process of the MoU on the tripartite mechanism."
Established in March, the tripartite mechanism is a body designed to help consolidate peace in the Great Lakes region, and safeguard the conditions favourable to the implementation of the Framework Accord for Peace, Stability and Cooperation in the DRC, signed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in February.

Nigeria: External Reserves Drop to U.S.$46.87 Billion As Naira Hits One Year Low
30 August 2013 , By Obinna Chima, Source: This Day
Nigeria's external reserves continued its lacklustre performance since this quarter as it fell to $46.871 billion on Wednesday, its lowest value this month.

This was just as the naira also weakened to its lowest value against the United States dollar this year at the interbank segment of the forex market as it closed at N163.70 to a dollar Thursday.

Data gathered from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the current position of the reserves derived mainly from the proceeds of crude oil production and sales represented a decline by $188 million or 0.4 per cent, compared to the $47.059 billion it stood as at August 1.

The foreign reserves largely hovered around $46.8 billion and $47.1 billion this month.

Although financial market analysts had predicted that the 50 per cent Cash Reserve Requirement (CRR) that was introduced for public sector funds by the CBN would support the accretion of the foreign reserves and also support naira appreciation in the short-term, this was yet to happen.

According to data gathered from the Financial Market Dealers Association (FMDA), at its current value at the interbank market, the nation's currency has shed a total of N7.03 kobo this year as against the N156.67 to a dollar it was at the beginning of the year. However, at the central bank's regulated bi-weekly forex auction, the naira maintained its value of N155.76 to a dollar. The CBN sold a total of $563.46 million at the two auctions held this week.

When contacted on the development, the Emerging Market Strategist at Standard Bank Plc, Mr. Samir Gadio, argued that it was questionable whether the CRR on public sector funds would intrinsically result in a qualitatively stronger naira because of its muted impact on market yields.

"It will rather cap the upside for dollar/naira and signal that the CBN will continue to defend exchange rate stability via direct and indirect measures as long as Governor Lamido Sanusi remains in charge (until June 2014).

"With around $47 billion of forex reserves, the central bank also has enough ammunition to supply adequate levels of dollars to corporate and, if needed, the interbank market, for some time. Additionally, the elevated Bonny Light oil price ($113.6/bbl on 22 Aug) reduces the possibility of a disorderly shift up in the exchange rate," Gadio said in a report to THISDAY.

Also, Kunle Ezun and Kenneth Asenime of the Ecobank Group, in a joint report said the naira remained under pressure due to structural imbalance between dollar supply and demand.

However, the treasurer of a bank said the country's high dependent on imported goods was putting pressure on the naira. He also argued the demand for forex by oil marketers for importation of petroleum products for the fourth quarter would further weaken the naira in the short-term. I hope these will clear all the lie I'm talking about so please stop misleading your people don't forget we live in an information free society

The Iraqis learnt from the 1991 war how to protect their tanks against air strikes. Answer this is Angola,Cuba,SWAPO under the advice of the USSR an easy foe?......Cuba didn't need experience all they needed was troops, cause the USSR supplied them with quality latest systems. Both Cameron and Chad don't or didn't have an weapons industry or an ally to supply them with Tanks, jets,APCs and artillery...Ask the Cubans maybe what happened when they meet South Africans during the Battle of cassinga......Soon you gonna have tp ask how many rebels have the Rooivalks killed, cause as of yesterdays atleast one helo was in Goma.

Nigerian army launches air, land strikes on Boko Haram camps ail Xinhua, October 31, 2013 视频播放位置下载安装Flash播放器
The Nigerian army on Wednesday said it has commenced air and land strikes on Boko Haram camps in northeast remote villages along the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway.

Spokesman of the Army 7 Division in Borno State, Lt Col Mohammed Dole, told reporters that unlike before, the army division would now strike on Boko Haram camps so as to destabilize the insurgents from planning or executing any attack again.

"There is an on going operation around Benisheik, Kaga Local Government. Troops of the 7 Division supported by the Nigerian Air force, attacked and destroyed Boko Haram camps at Goho village in Mainok general area. Several terrorists were killed while others fled to another camps in Marguba, same Mainok area but the troops pursued them to the camp at Marguba which was also destroyed," he added.

The exact number of the insurgents that were killed in the offensive was not ready since the operation is still going, the spokesman said, promising to avail journalists with details of the operation as soon as it is completed.

"Several of them were killed while others also fled. Terrorists who escaped from the Marguba camp following troops strike on their camp, crossed the Maiduguri-Damaturu road at Benisheik heading north toward Gubio (North of Borno). Troops from 7 Division are still pursuing the terrorists. The operation is still going on," he said.

He appealed to residents not to panic especially with the movement of the fleeing insurgents toward the northern part of the state, saying troops in the area have been alerted about the development.

He also said the troops from the division were already pursuing the fleeing Boko Haram men.

Last Friday, the Nigerian military announced the killing of 95 Boko Haram fighters in Yobe and Borno States in operations against the insurgents, who were alleged to attempt coordinated attacks.

The Boko Haram sect has proved the biggest security threat in the West African country since launching the insurgency in 2009. Endi

The "killing of boko haram" fighters has been announced since the early days of the state of emergency. That tired "story" doesn't wash anymore - assuming it ever did. We all know nothing announced can be independently verified anyway. shocked

Even your announcement of Shekau's "death" has failed to prove your military competent.

Fact is you're stuck in the abyss that's an internal insurgency. A small-scale war of sorts and you can't even dream of being useful in Africa at this point.

When the thread started, your claim to glory was your "usefulness" in other African countries. Well, let's hear you try that again - after you get over the minor issue of abandoned missions in Mali and Darfur. And the minor issue of insurgents that have no fear of your military inside its own sovereign land. cry
