Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 11:10am On Jan 09, 2014 |
Fighter Pilot: Man, you are really limited in your knowledge of military promotions. A mass promotion just took place between the three services and has nothing to do with finances. If you don't pass your exams at each level, you don't get promoted and will be retired once you exceed a certain age in a rank. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 11:11am On Jan 09, 2014 |
rka1: Those are not active military personnel. If I include those in SA, the numbers would even reach above a million. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 11:14am On Jan 09, 2014 |
rka1: Promotions have a lot to do with finance my friend. If you are promoted to a rank of captain you will have to earn more than what you have been earning. You cannot just keep on promoting if you do not have enough money to do that. I have to admit that SA is also sometimes facing challenge in that respect. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 11:21am On Jan 09, 2014 |
Fighter Pilot: No my friend, it has nothing to do with it in the Nigerian military, it is purely on merit and positions available, hence the compulsory retirements to move people along. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 11:40am On Jan 09, 2014 |
rka1: My friend, use your head. Do you by any chance want to tell me that you can be promoted to the rank of a colonel from captain in Nigeria and still get the salary of a captain, that's madness. No wonder there is such a biggest exodus of combatants in your military. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 11:55am On Jan 09, 2014 |
Fighter Pilot: No, you will be promoted from a Captain to a Major and paid as a Major. It is all budgeted for. There has never been a problem with officers being paid their salaries (I am not talking about deployment expenses etc, which is always open to abuse). I think you will find the big exodus is from SANDF not Nigerian Armed Forces. In fact, you have people desperate to join |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 12:02pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
rka1: Thanks, you have now answered it. If you are a captain and you are promoted to the rank of Major, L.t colonel or even Colonel, there is money involved which you will have to be paid for assuming a new higher rank. Budget=money. SANDF pay very good salaries to avoid exodus that you are experiencing in Nigeria. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by chris365(m): 12:41pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
Fighter Pilot: guy. either you are the worst mistake of SANDF, or they don't produce intelligent personnel anymore. shame "SA pays fat salaries to avoid mass exodus". that is why you don't have money left out of billions of dollars in defence to maintain your overpriced jets. you even lose pilots faster than any country in Africa. you can't sustain a mission unless payed for by UN, your military is a mess even after getting the biggest defence budget in Africa. and you think that's something to brag about? your money goes to maintain old expired fat bellied generals that you refuse to retire. and you wish Nigeria will follow suit. nonsense. Nigerian military promotions is based on merit and retirements don't translate to mass exodus as some of the retired generals work as private contractors to the military. we may not have very big budget, but I will prefer the way Nigerian military spends to the way SANDF does in a million times. by the way. about mass exodus, I believe you know SANDF is the leader in that category in African militaries. With dwindling budgets, an exodus of highly-skilled technical staff and reduced spending on training and equipment, the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) can barely meet its constitutional obligations, according to military experts http://tia-mysoa..com/2012/09/sandf-on-verge-of-collapse-so-whats-new.html?m=1 isn't that a big shame for a military that gets so much money just to pay fat belly generals? you no get sense 3 Likes |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 12:59pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
chris365: Don't bring blogs which have been written from people's personal point of view. All pilots who are retiring from full-time military service because of salary related problems are free to pursue other opportunities at their own accord. Many of them still regard military with the highest esteem, thus have joined our reserve forces which is still part of SANDF. Nigeria also cannot sustain their peace keeping missions without the help of UN. Many of them were left stranded in Sudan where even two of their soldiers died because of depression, while SA could not wait for UN to provide transport, but charted their own plane home. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 1:17pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
Fighter Pilot: Stop lying, it is well documented about the exodus of SANDF personnel due to your policies of positive discrimination. It has already been covered in the past re peacekeepers in Sudan who were the responsibility of the UN and not the Nigerian Military. The UN eventually brought them home. It was their mistake. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 1:27pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
Fighter Pilot: It is a shame you can't get your head round anything. There is no problem paying salaries as money is not a problem or bone of contention. People only leave or are compulsorily retired when they reach the retirement age or fail their promotion exams and become too old for the post they hold if they fail to make any progress as required. It is enshrined in military law. They are not allowed to sit on fat bottoms doing nothing as in SANDF. They can take on contracts or act as advisers or do what they want when they leave, but not good enough to remain in the army. An exodus is when people flee somewhere, i.e. SANDF. Only the officers with specialist skills are kept on longer after retirement age. It doesn't affect military operations as there are plenty of officers who have merited the promotion waiting to progress. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 1:33pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
rka1: So, why didn't your military exercise their own discretion just like we did other than waiting for UN. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by chris365(m): 1:48pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
Fighter Pilot: Oh, you couldn't site any better example but a UN blunder? What about Nigerian missions in Liberia, SL, Ivory coast, Mali, Bissau,? Did the UN pay before we embarked on those missions? Mind you. That story was no one's personal opinion but the general problem the current SANDF faces. You have lost professionals faster than in any war zone. Your promotions are marred by racial discrimination, and your fat useless generals eat up more than half of your budget. What's the pride in that? Huh? |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 1:59pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
chris365: You are accusing SA for being over-dependent on UN aid, but you failed to airlift your troops in Sudan out of your own expense. We did it, but we are always relying on UN for help. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 3:02pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
Fighter Pilot: Because it was a UN mission and their responsibility. We have airlfted troops and equipment to missions in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mali etc and even been evacuating Nigerians from CAR with a C-130 and chartered flights, so airlifting in not a problem. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 3:11pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
rka1: So, why is it a problem if we let UN to take reaponsibility of every cost that we incur. Why is it a problem if we SA do so? Why is it a problem when we do it? |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 3:33pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
Fighter Pilot: Have I told you it is a problem? I think the UN should incur the costs if it is their operation because Nigeria has learnt lessons from the past and understand no one will reimburse you if you bear the costs upfront. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by chris365(m): 4:21pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
rka1: But some situations require that we do. Take for instance in Liberia and SL, what would have happened if we hadn't gone in while waiting for UN? Look at how we waited for Mali. Imagine if France didn't intervene independently when they did. When it concerns your national interest and security, you don't have to wait for UN pocket money before taking actions. SA touts itself as a leader on the continent and should therefor understand the cost. I don't think Nigeria made any mistake in funding those missions. It is such leadership qualities that has continued to place us higher than SA on the continent. No matter how developed there are than us. Look at the status Kenya achieved after they intervened in Somalia before joining the AMISOM. Bros, he dey important. Just look at how SA sissied out of CAR and chose to play back seat in DRC. Who would respect such military? |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 4:37pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
chris365: I don't disagree with you in an urgent situation to go it alone knowing there will be no reinbursements (we know that now). What i am against is a routine UN mission (like Sudan), which I think should lie solely with the UN unless the situation is dire. What else do you expect from the SANDF? 1 Like |

rka1: Yes, NCDC as nigerian gendarme version like Cameroon has. I posted here before photos of Nigerian civil defence with military training under Nigerian army and fighting boko haram at the local level. Then add Nigerian navy and air force to the number. .

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by agaugust: 10:28pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
Fighter Pilot: The only advanced reserve forces in Africa are those from South Africa, comprising of professional doctors, nurses, technicians, engineers, pilots, scientists, combat soldiers, etc. If you want to count that, Nigeria has the largest number in Africa for such class of trained reserves. every 3 years Nigeria trains new batches totaling about one million NYSC corp members under Nigerian Army special camps. we can mobilize 3 million of them to join our army any time any day. they already have all the army drills, we add firearm drills, they are all university graduates.

Thiza: Increased levels of fighting in South Sudan have apparently led to the SA Army being asked to send a mounted infantry battalion to the continent’s newest state in an effort to restore order. why is it that south africa never wants to help the poor and weak africa countries without getting a financial reward like mineral mining contracts in return ? why ? when the rest of africa was helping you guys escape the chains of apartheid did you promise us anything as reward ? a brother is a brother ! .

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 3:17am On Jan 10, 2014 |
agaugust: Those are not properly organised reserves chief!!! I told you to go and learn. They do not have units and as such you cannot reduce them as reserves simply because they received military training. You have zero reserves. Fact!! South Africa has properly organised reserves who are working full time with their units. Structures which are properly equipped with heavy weapons. http://www.rfdiv.mil.za/ |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by agaugust: 3:49am On Jan 10, 2014 |
Fighter Pilot: there are different levels of training for reserve force according to each country's policy, and therefore different levels of combat readiness of the reserves. some are 100% combat ready like in Israel, some are 25% as in Nigeria. South Africa i dont know what percentage readiness they have until i see details. it is easy to provide the remaining part of training for nigerian NYSC with AK-47 rifles. they already have army camp regimental training. 3 million nigerian NYSC members with AK-47 rifles will make even Egypt to think twice. Fighter Pilot: the heavy weapons you have in south africa are not even enough to share round for your full time active soldiers. your 50,000 man army having only 120 artillery guns is a big joke anywhere in the world. there are NO heavy weapons for south african reserves to carry, they will only carry rifles. its very hard to fool me bros ! Lol ! meanwhile, show us source to prove numbers of south africa military combatant reserves that you claim is 30,000....show us proof. . |

agaugust: Why are we helping Nigeria now to industrialise by investing more in your economy? |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 4:49am On Jan 10, 2014 |
agaugust: You should have first provided the source for your claim of your so called NYSC You are dreaming!! Nigeria has zero reserve forces. Our reserve force has many bases across the country and they even deploy to UN missions. They carry heavy weapons which are part of their inventory separate from those of SANDF The strength of SANDF= ±75 000 The strength of SA Reserve Forces= ±35 000. In SA, the minister of defence heads the following. Military Veterans SANDF SA Military Reserves Special Forces (President of the RSA) |
