One thing with Nigerians is that they do not read to comprehend. This is what I have collected from the website which I provided.

"At the same briefing, to mark the graduation of the first locally qualified Gripen fighter pilots, officers told reporters the squadron mustered three locally qualified pilots and six qualified in Sweden, making for nine. Three more were expected to qualify next year".

That meant that nine pilots were already qualified as at 2010 and three more were expected to add to that number.

At the same briefing, to mark the graduation of the first(1) locally qualified Gripen fighter pilots, officers told reporters the squadron mustered three(3) locally qualified pilots and six(6)qualified in Sweden, making for nine.1+3+6=10

In response to a question by Freedom Front Plus MP Pieter Groenewald, tabled in Parliament yesterday, the military added two of the current Gripen pilot cadre are black men, one is an Indian male, one a white female and the remaining six are white males
2+1+1+6=10

The Ministry of Defence says the flying service musters 10 Gripen aircrew (eight pilots, two navigators) and 13 Hawk aircrew, all pilots.

The remaining 3 mentioned are most likely navigators, due to the imbalance.
Three more were expected to qualify next year.

Ah ! na waah o ! South African air force is getting a real bashing on nairaland this new year, no be happy new year for dem at all o !

So, South African air force has more jet fighters than pilots to fly them, and they want to be the strongest military in Africa with this shameful shortage of manpower ? For where ? Rara o, ko le possible !

So anyone able to figure out how many Gripen pilots and Hawk pilots they have (Not navigators)

I guess maximum 8 Gripen pilots and 13 Hawk pilots. Any one with any other figures ? just trying to get the 6 or 8 or 10 pilot thing clear. Thanks.

South Africa To Remain Permanently Dependent On Sweden's SAAB For Routine Maintenance Of Gripen Jets...

This huge cost may be a reason why only 12 of the 26 Gripens can be in service at one time, the rest are frozen in a cold long term storage until judgement day maybe.

Lets not forget that the article is from 2010, as at 2013, the same website states they have 6 pilots grin grin grin

At present the SAAF can only muster six qualified Gripen pilots who only have 150 flying hours available across the whole Gripen squadron this year, according to Maynier. The annual target for fighter flying hours was 250 for the 2011/2012 period, according to the Department of Defence’s most recent Annual Report.

same here;

"Currently, only about half of the remaining 14 Gripens are flyable and there are only six qualified Gripen pilots. Corruption, shrinking defense budgets, and political pressure to find more black combat pilots and technical personnel has led to the South African Air Force having fewer operational aircraft.

They are losing pilots as fast as they are training them.

dude this ranking is an old one currently Egypt is the strongest in Africa due to its large forces and the support Egypt is getting from America puts Egypt on top second place Ethopia Nigeria and S Africa are on the same rank and nigerian Army is still as strong as ever no worry yourself
if s africa was still allowed to have nukes some african countries would have been building nukes if they had help from the top three super power countries and beside Nigeria is financially capable and is richly blessed with uranium and russia was trying to help us build nuclear power plants although it was for peaceful use

Dude you're a comedian. Those other jet have canards to enable them to make tight turns. Besides your Nigerian F-7 have a radar that covers around 15km-20km.

Regarding the A-Darter it is scheduled to enter service this year. I'm sure training missiles are now delivered we are just awaiting SAAF to publicly reveal it maybe in the April-May air force demonstration. TOTAL AIR SUPERIORITY OVER NIGERIA.

first correction, nigerian F-7 jet Italian Grifo-7 radar range is 42 km, not your imaginary 15 km.

all nigerian 12 F-7 jets have qualified and competent pilots, and all our 12 jets are in perfect flying condition.

south africa can only fly 6 Gripen jets at once. nigeria out-numbers you in air superiority jets by ratio 2:1.

nigeria has double the air power of south africa in Gripen Vs F-7.

nigerian PL-9C missile has technical specification of 90% chance of bringing down the enemy when fired.

so, it does not matter south africa has A-DARTER missile, and it is NOT yet in service, your A-DARTER is being delayed every year, maybe by 2015 it will hopefully enter service.

what makes you think by that time nigeria would not have bought PL-12 missile ? nobody has monopoly of getting new weapons this new year.

south africa has total 19 jets flying with qualified pilots, 6 Gripen, 13 Hawks.

nigeria has total 53 jets flying with qualified pilots, 12 F-7, 12 MBB-339, 12 Alpha, 14, 17 L-39.

try find solution to the fact that nigeria heavily out-numbers south africa in all mixed types jet fighters by a wide gap ratio 4:1.

Now here's a little scenario that would play out if the F-7 was to meet the advanced: The Gripen detects a enemy craft at round 115km. The pilot will weigh his options whether to engage or not and other stuff like does the plane still have enough fuel for the dogfight. Then if decides to engage: At high speed enemy craft on radar screen he blasts into the F-7's 15km-20km radar covered area. The F-7 will detect an incoming enemy plane, from there the pilot will drop his tanks(Thee F-7 carries three fuel tanks in superiority roles+2 missiles) and try get a lock on the enemy. By the time he does this the Gripen will be within visual range and firing its first missile causing your pilot to take his plane into evasive manoeuvres against a 5th generation missile coupled with the Cobra HMD with no luck the F-7 will be shot down. TOTAL AIR SUPERIORITY OVER NIGERIA.

south africa has total air superiority over zimbabwe, NOT nigeria.

now let me not reply you, let a fully qualified american air force jet fighter pilot reply you below :

"Upon entering into an WVR (within visual range) combat envelope the MiG-21 Bisons armed with HMS and deadly NBVR/WVR missiles had the capability of destroying even 5th generation fighters like Stealth F-22 Raptor as assessed by high-profile Fighter Analyst Ben Lambeth of RAND Corporation. According to Lambeth "in visual combat everybody dies at the same rate." "

south africa has total air superiority over zimbabwe, NOT nigeria.
now let me not reply you, let a fully qualified american air force jet fighter pilot reply you below :

"Upon entering into an WVR (within visual range) combat envelope the MiG-21 Bisons armed with HMS and deadly NBVR/WVR missiles had the capability of destroying even 5th generation fighters like Stealth F-22 Raptor as assessed by high-profile Fighter Analyst Ben Lambeth of RAND Corporation. According to Lambeth "in visual combat everybody dies at the same rate." "
