okoroemeka: I don't think there was any basis for comparison in the first place sef. And if monalisa actually takes up to 40 days before harvest, then it is definitely not worth it, except for experiment purpose. The only reason I'll recommend any farmer to use a different variety from Cu999 will be for quick harvest, considering that Cu spends between 41-46 days before harvest and we have varieties with harvest in about 32days. Aside this, if a farmer will be patient enough, I'll just say go for the Cu 999. Note: I've got both Cu and Murano on my farm 1 Like |

Yampotatocarrot:we are not even interested in experimenting with any other variety again,cu 999 and . Murano 2 are the two best cucumbers a commercial farmer can plant and be sure of profits, anything else you are trying this rainy season you are on your own. 1 Like 1 Share |

We did our first harvest today on the monalisa and cu999 challenge farm and the results i think its best left for my fellow farmers to judge for themselves, the first pic is side by side comparison the bigger cuke is cu 999, while the shorter is monalisa.

The first picking has a very big heap of cu 999 fruits, while on the side we planted monalisa the small fruits by the side is the only sizeable cukes we can harvest there 2 Shares

Total monalisa, first pic and total cu999,last pic,I just pity any farmer that plants monalisa,cu 999 yielded 97% of the cucumbers we harvested today was cu 999,we got 7 bags and I doubt if it's monalisa we planted through we may not have up to 2 bags, the results surprised even us,I know that cu999 will win but I didn't forsee a comprehensive demolition 1 Like 1 Share

okoroemeka: Bro, I am not affiliated to East West, but you cannot use this experiment to rubbish Monalisa. Not fair. 1. Cross pollination is a big factor here. It happens in tomato trials too, but the effect both negative and positive is huge in cukes. 2. Same cross pollination makes your Cu999 so dark. I have not seen that variety as dark as what you gat there. Just thinking. If I can get the parents lines of Cu999 and Monalisa, looks like a good combo to me. lol 3. Monalisa may not perform well due to rain because it's tolerance to downy mildew is low, but it does not mean it is a bad variety. Maybe just not good for you. And it may infect CU999 with the disease. 4. Or Monalisa may perform woefully cos Cu999 crossing it is a wrong variety. It is not fair how you rubbish that variety cos I know farmers who love it. I do not like it too, but I will not really rubbish it. But really, looking at it from another angle, East West needs to return to the drawing board to see if they can improve on it if they really want it accepted in tropics. You know you did not accept my comment when you started. Do you know how many combos I have tried? You don't want to know. I have a section on my farms for continuous trials. But those ma.ddd boys called farm workers just made me close all up. And then, I tried to partner with so called educated people, but their aim is to get what they want and leave. lolz. Even I am sure you are experiencing it. They are friendly cos of what they want. As soon as they feel they have it, they dash off. And you need their help, they start asking for money like consultants. lolz. 2 Likes |

okoroemeka: Wow!!! I have been waiting patiently for this...Kudos @ okoroemeka. Great thread you created here. I have learnt so much. I am ready to take up the challenge. From what I gathered, I would like to work with CU999 Seeds. SAAF Fungicides. Imiforce Pesticide. Phostrogen Fertiliser. Please help me with these info Present cost for CU999 50g, SAAF and Phostrogen for 1 Plot. How can I get it immediately? Also I am already planning for the dry season farming. I would love to use the rain gun since I am farming deep in the jungle. So is the price still 50k per 1? Can I set up myself, or the company has to install? You said it covers 2 Plot at a go...can it be adjusted to face other plots? Or I need to install several of them? Finally what likely challenges will I experience while using it? Is it very Cucumber friendly? Please pardon me for bombarding you with so much questions... |

seriously that cu999 dark green color could pass as Murano and it would sell here in the West, Maybe the monalisa and cu999 is a bad combo for monalisa but the dark green color on the cu999 is just so appealing to the eyes 1 Like |

I'm preparing to plant cu999 with Murano. I hope the cu999 will yield fruits of a darker hue. I aim to harvest around 40 days, so the cucumbers can be smaller. Buyers in my area won't be keen on huge cu999 fruits! 1 Like |

DeLaRue:well it is left for you to decide how big you want it to get,in our area the bigger the better, and I don't think cross pollination contributed to the greenish colour,if you bombard cu 999 with manure and nutrients you will be surprised how dark green it can get,we have done a sack farm project that has even darker green color than the one above. |

Pistotita:we are not critical of East West seed,we just did an experiment that proves beyond any reasonable doubt the economic viability of planting monalisa in the south east, for me farming is not a hobby or passion, its my business and means of livelihood, today we transplanted 2000 Efia pepper by East West seed in our pepper megaproject alongside Cameroon habaneros,we will also order on Friday a further 4000 seeds from Mr olatian in East West, they are a good company no doubt, but I think it best for farmers to know were the pitfalls are, their habanero pepper has a good track record ,but I can't say that for the monalisa, pics of site B,Efia habaneros (East West)field transplanting. 1 Share

Not sure how feeding well a variety will change its genetical skin color. How possible is that? Not just right to discard that variety cos of your experiments which I have shown you the flaws in it before they even start flowering. I already know the result. Also, it is wrong to cultivate a variety without mildew resistant during rainy season and expect it to yield high. You don't just cross pollinate all cucumbers or pairs anyhow. It does not work like that. Cucumber is a different kind of crop. Still surprised high feeding rate or high organic matters can alter genetic composition of a crop. First time I heard such. That's a theory I frown at. Likely false. 2 Likes 1 Share |

FMCASH: Magnesium change a light green cucumber to darker green? Are you kidding me? I need to try it. Very light green to dark green? Are you for real? Cos it is simple to test. We just feed cu999 only well, and we see if it can produce such dark green color. Nutrition change the genetics of a variety? FMCASH:This is new. It is going to open a new approach I am working if this is true. Please, I want to know more about it. I am always opened to new ideas. My apologies to @okoroemeka if this is true. Cos if there is a witness, there is an element of truth. I have to really test it. There must be something about manure. Just thinking....can it be Magnesium? Can it be the nutrients inside? Or what exactly is in manure that alters the gene? It is why I say that I use compost more for organic matters cos what is in that stuff and with microbes cannot be underestimated. This should be really investigated well. The more I study microorganisms activities, the more I just say "There is a supreme being somewhere". Not that I have accepted your theory, but it's worth looking into. And with a practical farmer like @okoroemeka put it here, then, I should check it well. 2 Likes |

We have done a site mostly with npk and pig manure as basal application, the end result was big cucumbers with olive green skin, some even has ,50%almost white colour covering the fruits,we discovered that chicken manure applied at 28-30 days gives dark green cukes, pig manure don't do that,I digged deeper into the case and found out that chicken manure contains all the 13 major/micro and trace elements required for good cucumber production, and I personally suspect it may contain more unknown elements that has eluded science over the years. |

FMCASH: Interesting. My downy mildew-infected Tokyo seems to produce much darker fruit than normal. I wonder if it's to do with the magnesium sulphate I applied when I initially mis-diagnosed the yellowing leaves as possible magnesium deficiency. 1 Like |

Re: 500,000 Naira From One Plot Of Land In 90 Days. by Nobody: 9:43am On Jun 19, 2019 |
okoroemeka: Not really that science overlooked it sir. The bolded phrase is what science called organic matters. That's the living organisms and nutrients in it. And some can be deadly and poisonous. Sir, if you do not mind, let me break it down very well. To test your well being and state of your health, doctors test not only your organs, fluid, but your waste products - urine, stool, sweat, etc. It was funny how my doctor was reading my blood tests and stool. And we usually have good discussion everytime because be knows I always have questions. Doctor at a time was monitoring the amount of urea not in my urine but in my blood. I was on antibiotics to treat a certain infection some years ago, and after the test showed negative, I was relieved. But that doctor kept sending me back to do blood test. I was like...."doctor, why are you making me waste money on doing blood test for some things I don't understand while the main test had shown consistently 3 times that I am free for good six months". The dude laughed (he is Mexican). And he said he noticed that my white blood cell range is higher than normal which means, it is fighting something inside, and some other points he showed me. But he stopped prescribing antibiotics and changed to enzymes, and immune builders to help my white blood cells fight whatever they were confronting which tests did not bring out. Until it was normalized consistently for 1 year, that guy kept telling me to return. This is how I got the idea of immune booster, and Enzymes importance in every living organism. What you eat is what you pass out Chicken are fed more with well nutritious diets, as well with antibiotics. So, it is normal that poultry waste products are more nutritious than other kinds. Except you find a pig farm that uses good feed formular for the pigs. But in.Nigeria, I doubt it. lol. Rabbit waste is better You do not need to even compost it. The best liquid manure. Instead of using micro nutrients, I will opt for rabbit, but fortify it with microbes to make it more potent. Not just any microbe, but special microbes. (Presently, I am writing about this topic which I will post on my thread so farmers don't think all those expensive organic sprays imported from Indian and Thailand are exceptionally good). And the best of all is Vermicompost. When that manure passes the gut of worms, they bring out quality enzymes good for plants which science has not looked into in details, but definitely recognised the positive impact. We are on the same track which is that farmers should bombard their land with compost. If my aim is to produce manure for my crops by producing animals, it does not matter which one I choose. All I have to do is formulate quality feed for the animals so that their waste can be highly nutritious. Be it pig, chicken, cattle, sheep, etc. And if I want to take it to another level, I will decompose it with worms. But it is easier said than done. It is a tough task that needs the attention of a professional to formulate it well for you. The feed I will give my animals if doing trees, will be different from the ones producing veggie fruits, and also different from green leaves. And the specie of worms to use is another different ball game. Otherwise, one can easily mess the whole process up, and possible start breeding staph, ecoli, streptococcus, etc. That can be really nas.ty and deadly. Kopi Luwak This is the most disgusting thing I experienced in Europe some years ago. After having Kopi Luwak (name of the coffee drink) from Starbucks, I had to tell my friend that there was a distinct flavor in it. That was when he told me how the coffee was made. I wanted to vomit it. They fed some certain cats coffee beans, and since the cats cannot digest them well, they always pass the whole beans out almost intact, but with refined enzymes. And that was how I drank "cat po.ops" during my stay there. hahahahhahahahha. 3 Likes |
