My first Dissecting session didn't meet my expectations. The cadavers made available for us were so... Don't know how to describe but I will say they have lost all human features. So stiff and dried up. We were not able to appreciate any structure. I don't know if it's the norm in medicine school or its just a case of bad circumstance

I am sorry guys for not showing up for a while, it wasn't intentional, Apologies accepted?
As we all know the good news that ASUU strike has been suspended, School activities would continue asap and I would be able to keep this thread very active
Today, I'm going to do a review of the textbooks used for ANATOMY. Note that this might vary from University to University, So whatever I say here is based on my own university (OOU), but however it is similar in most Nigerian Universities
Let's get started
CLINICALLY ORIENTED ANATOMY by KEITH MOORE
Well, this was the first book I purchased when I got to Medical school, So large a book, probably the largest Anatomy textbook you'll use, It is from an English author, hence, the use of English is superb, Over here, it is the most popular book, cause it is very detailed, I call it Almighty Keith Moore. A lot of information reside in this book that you might spend close to an hour reading just 10 pages (not to scare you), it also has good use of diagrams but it has a fault most people noticed, it doesn't place emphasis on any information, so you just read without knowing what to put more attention to and what to read lightly, that's why some people in my school prefer the next book I'm about to talk about. This book sells for around 8,000 over here

BD CHAURASIA HUMAN ANATOMY
well, this is a very nice and precise book, of an Indian Author, so the English used is moderate and average, the difference between this book and Keith Moore is that while Keith Moore could write a paragraph about a topic, this book would write it as bullet points and explain it briefly. Keith Moore would give you everything about a topic, but this would give you all you need to know, And it is very effective as there is limited time to study as a Medical Student and it's not only Anatomy you're doing. But personally, I only use Chaurasia when I've read it on Keith Moore first. The textbook sells for around 13,000 naira

LAST ANATOMY
well, this is a book for bosses, if you try to read this book without prior knowledge, you'll feel Anatomy is very hard, But an amazing thing about this book is that it has a lot of 'stuffs', things that they ommited in other textbooks seem to be here, in my own opinion, this book is for Professionals in the field or for students that wants to revise before the Examination. The textbook sells for around 5,000 naira

GRAYS ANATOMY
I personally haven't used this book so much, and I didn't even purchase it, I use the PDF, but with the little I've used, it has amazing graphics, Nice stuffs, overall it is a very nice book.

But, you know, you might run into problem when you're combining a lot of textbooks, cause there is limited time and using multiple is like time wasting and information might just begin to become confusing to you as most textbook have varying information, A textbook can call a value 1.0 and another can call it 1.01, so when you have like 4 values in your head and you're asked during Incourse, you get confused. But it is advisable to use the textbook your lecturer prefers

You could also get a nice ATLAS for diagrams and over here I use Netter's Atlas and my experience with the book has been so wonderful.
How are you guys doing? And How is preparation for resumption

Well I've been in school since January irrespective of the strike, you know as medical students, you need to read a lot and we had some tutorials throughout the strike

Hoping to hear from you guys

Olumide.

So guys, As expected, I'm in 300L now, My MB exam is in July cry cry
A lot of things have happened mehn, It hasn't really been easy, but I wouldn't describe it as tough, cause it has been relatively easy.
.
Permit me to brief you guys about my progress in different subjects

ANATOMY
Anatomy is a very vast subject, and we're almost done with the curriculum, that means we've done
Upper Limbs
Lower Limbs
Thorax
Abdomen
Head and Neck
General Histology
Systemic Histology
Systemic Embryology
.
For some complicated reasons, we couldn't do General embryology, even though we're still going to do it

So the major work remaining under anatomy is Neuroanatomy

Well, my journey in Anatomy hasn't been really bad at all, Most of my scores have been really OK,
i feel Anatomy is the course I enjoy the most, cause I'm a visual learner, and anatomy deals mostly with the structure of things

I almost forgot to talk about dissection, well, so far so good, we've dissected the whole human body, and the only thing remaining is to break the skull and remove the brain

The fact that I am expected to be able to name any structure in the cadaver still SCARES me, but we go dey all right

I'll talk about the other two courses soon
BTW My MB exam is soon, and I need prayers wink

Wow, I'm surprised that some people see 'Keith Moore' as more complex than 'Last'

To me, Last Anatomy is like my Last resort, In my opinion, it's for surgeons cause they squeeze so much details into few words

Thank you OP for such a wonderful platform. I just gained admission to study Medicine and Surgery in UNIJOS. I am currently a 200 level student of Biochemistry in one of the state universities.
I had been contemplating whether to switch over to MBBS or obtain the Biochemistry degree first. What is your take on this?

Secondly, please I'd like to know how expensive studying MBBS really is, in terms of the textbooks and all. Thanks mam
I know it's been a while since you post this but can you pls let us chat on WhatsApp. My number is 08130284420 if you can't drop yours sir. I am an aspirant of the school with 305 in jamb

Na so so guys full this thread undecided

Most of those voluminous textbooks with the ambiguous words in it scare me at times.
I don't even know how I'll do it when I get to 200level.
My bosses in the house, how do you go about reading?
Re: Medical School: The Journey by Damson22: 11:33pm On Apr 17
OlumhideGold:
So, this thread is for anybody that would simply like to know what's up in the medical school
I study in the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Here, Medicine is a 6 years course in which the first year is a compulsory year for basic sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)in Ago Iwoye. It is however compulsory for you to scale above the minimum score which is 50% per course or else, the the person would be 'dropped' to another course which they feel seems lesser to Medicine. But no need to fear, scoring above 50 is not so hard for the basic science courses
The students who pass therefore move to Sagamu, which is the real deal. Sagamu houses the Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences(Our Medical College) and Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital. This Sagamu is known as the home of reading, Yunno, Medical students and hyperstuffs.
The Medical College doesn't run a similar calender to the normal school calender
After your resumption in 200L, you'll spend 18 months learning about three courses (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry) which I would talk about later, After this 18months, you'll be required to face the ALMIGHTY MB exam which you must pass (50%) in other to move to the next level. I'm tired rn, I'll update you guys later, let me know what you feel about this thread in the comments

You mean OOU and OAU mbbs students are in sagamu?
Re: Medical School: The Journey by Odiaze(m): 5:05pm On Apr 18
Nice thread though, but why is it only Medical students thread i see mostly on Nairaland, is it that there are not any Engineering students or students from other courses in Nairaland to post details of things happening in their departments. Mehn am fraustrated with all these, everywhere u go its medicine, medical school, medical journey etc. U medical students should give other departments breathing space na at least this forum was created for all disciplines and not only for you medical students. Well all these would soon stop when i finally gain admission.
Am a Chemical Engineering aspirant of UNIPORT and when i gain finally admission i will create alot of diaries and threads talking about everything and anything Engineering and life in ENGINEERING SCHOOL. Then at least all these threads of only medical stuffs will reduce a bit in Nairaland.

Is it the medical students you should be talking to or your colleagues, nairaland is big for anyone who wants to make a thread. Don't speak like you have an hatred for medical students.

Re: Medical School: The Journey by sanchex1: 11:10pm On May 23
So I'm actually new here ..im a 200 level medical student too of Abia state university..medics hmu
Ours is kinda similar except we have to write a 200lvl exam (pre mbbs)..there's no fixed score tho ..except that I know that at least half of the class has to resit next year ..last year the cut off
Was about 60% since a lot of persons scored real high..
So it's kinda survival of the fittest

..after which u start paying 112k as school fees ..well they recently added 100k as professional fee while entering 100 level ..so I guess it's almost 500k for 100level medic
