Actually, the hole:

1. Expels the vacuum between two surfaces thereby releasing the stools from suction pressure should they be stacked. (like in syringe or glass sucker working principles)

2. It's easier to pull out with a finger if in stacks.

3. The stools could be locked together for security purposes.
