You just just contradicted yourself, the consultant that have experience did he bring it from heaven? He had experience by treating some other patients too

Then there is no student doctor, Doctor is doctor, student is student.

Definitely the Health care system has alot of flaws, but is it doctors that will manufacture oxygen? We should hold our government responsible. The health care workers are highly stressed, in UK, there is a maximum amount of hours health workers are allowed to work because working beyond these number of hours makes them prone to errors
There is no contradiction here, maybe you don't get the explanation, we were just discharged not long and I got my experience.
A lot of people die everyday in government hospitals not necessarily of the illness but Doctor/Nurses carelessness, I am not generalizing, there are some good ones.
Some of the consultants don't have time for the government hospitals, they only concentrate on their own private hospital.

So because student doctors have to learn so patient should die , while it is a process of learning, there are still some mistakes.
Funny enough death doesn't mean anything to them.

The truth is Nigerians generally care less about government facilities they rather destroy the government own to build theirs

Inasmuch as I don't condone neglignence, there are a lot of issues with this story

1.Exactly what illness brought her husband to the hospital?? Was it something that could have been treated?? What was the prognosis?

I am asking this quesiton because oxygen is not given as a cure all...it is given as a part of what we call 'supportive management'. Patients have died on oxygen not because it was lacking but because their illness was terminal.

2.Doctors and nurses are not responsible for oxygen...it is the hospital's procurement unit. And this being a government hopsital...they probably did not have enough cash to buy enough oxygen

The thing is, we spend less than one trillion naira for over a 100 government owned hospitals. Recently, the head of one teaching hospital was quoted as saying that he gets six million for overheads...while the actual cost is 11million. Where is he going to get five million from.??

In my opinion, government should privatise tertiary healthcare and make primary and secondary health care its focus.

I am a doctor, and I have told patient';s relatives several times 'there is nothing we can do'. Let me tell you of two such times

The first time was to the parents, and then grandparents of a newborn baby who ended up with severe brain damage due to obstructed labour. The child was rushed to the teaching hospital where i was with severe diffculties. If we had a ventilatior for infants, the child could have survived...but the thing is, the child would have been severely disabled...and may have died eventually. Telling the relaitons was the hardest thing I ever had to do...and it still hurts to this day, some ten years later.

Another time was a girl with a dilated cardiomyopathy. Heart was just a flabby mass...could not pump well. Everything had been done..all she needed was a heart transplant...not available in Nigeria. She died. 22 years. I nearly broke down.

Some of you people who insult and curse us doctors don't know that each death affects us too...and there are some we remember, even years later. And there are times when a patient, in grief...like the relation who blamed us for her mother's death...her mother's kidneys had failed...she was on lifesaving dialysis when she died on the machine...and it was all our fault. (We did everything by the book).

So, to the guy who said that the woman should slap us....well, I cannot hate you or curse you. All I can promise you is that we will continue to do our best regardless of the condtion. I do not expect your thanks when we succed...it is my job, and a postman does not celebrate when he delivers the mail...so therefore I won't celebrate when I save a life.

I love my work as a doctor. I have run , shouted, advocated, spent money for, cried over, lost my social life, worsened my health, so that patients can be comfortable, and lives can be saved. I am prepared to keep on working long hours, to keep on fighting, to keep on suffering, even if I do not get your gratitude, even if you slap me.....because it is my job, and if I and my colelagues walked away, things would be much worse....much much worse.

Every death affects me, and every death hurts me. I always find myself going over the possibilites. What could we have done,? What could have been done.? Sometimes I blame msyelf, and sometimes I never stop blaming myself. Sometimes I cry, sometimes, I cannot stop crying.

But that is the job. Some body has to do it.

So, I;ll keep doing it.

Thank you and good evening.

That's a good one. Without actually knowing you, I believe you are a good man and a good Doctor. Keep being yourself no matter what. However, you cannot vouch for your colleagues. But I will not blame Doctors or any particular profession for the rot in the health sector. Just like I disagree with those that blame the Police for the crime problem in the country.
All these problems in the different sectors are tied to the structural problem of the country. If that structural problem is not taken care of, we will keep complaining till eternity.

You don't get it. It dpends on the hand they use on their nurses. Finally they are responsible for any lousiness of their staff.
Point of correction, except it's a private settings, they are not their nurses. The government employ nurses the same way they employ doctors, they each have different job descriptions and in this case, it's the nurses fault and it might not be (cos they own the patient). So in a government hospital, nurses are not doctors' staff, both doctors and nurses are government staffs, government pay nurses salaries the same way they pay doctors' salaries. Doctors don't pay nurses salary.

Nurses are only doctors' staff in a private hospital because the doctor build his hospital and employed them thereby, paying their salary.

Please it's high time we stopped being misinformed in this country, Doctor and Nurses are two different people, two different employees, no one is superior to the other, it's not a case of boss and employees. Just like Doctors move from one level to another, one post to the other, so do nurses, thank you.

So you are the one who obviously do not get it.

thanks doc for your insight on this issue.if you chake my post well you will see when I mentioned that their are still good doctors out there and from what you said I could deduce you are one of such.I won't mention any name of a hospital here but the truth is that their are somany reported cases of doctors negligence in our country.some are so snuhish, the humiliation they give to patients and relations is so grave.most especially to peaple they see as poor ones.
Once again thanks, and continue with your good work.

FMC Abeokuta is decaying everyday. The same way they wanted to operate my daughter because of low level of Glucose 5yrs ago.

I discharged my daughter and we went home. She's 5yrs a week ago and nothing has happened to her to the glory of God.

FMC Abeokuta NHIS will not give you drug. You will have to buy all from outside.

It's a consulting clinic. Unfortunately government want to turn it to a teaching hospital.

I went to one of my bank branches to withdraw money, I requested for withdrawal leaflet, the lady at the counter said I should use the ATM or my booklet, I told her none is with me, she said the bank no longer issue that leaflet to customers that I have to go home and bring my booklet, oush! I was so mad at her to the extent the whole banking hall thought Arm Robbers just invaded the place, she started begging me to calm down that there is a way out

That was when she started asking me for my BVN, capture my finger and bla bla bla

Disregard doctors? We are supposed to do our own things, incorporate plans from other staff like the doctors, pharmacists etc and also perform t collaboration. You should do well by finding out what nurses do, not the quacks that is littered all over the mushroom private hospitals you patronise.
Do note that Nigerian nurses does not produce oxygen.? Ever wonder why they excel when they leave Nigerian shores?
As a nurse if there is nothing to take care of you with while on admission in our very own Nigerian hospitals, the much i can do is to hold your hand to a peaceful death.

You may be a wonderful nurse, Oga madam, but to say the bolded is pure flatulence!

Who doesn't know that a higher number of the nurses in the government hospitals in Nigeria are loudmouths, uncouth and rude merchants of death.

Ask yourself, how many people who truly can afford it and know better, would chose a government hospital over a private one in Nigeria.

You don't get it. It dpends on the hand they use on their nurses. Finally they are responsible for any lousiness of their staff.
You Nigerians are the biggest hypocrites ever.
Same you will complain how doctors want to take over everything and head even nurses when they want to assert authority over nurses.
Nurses are known to insult and disobey doctors severally and you can't do anything abt it you can only complain to their in-charge.
A doctor in that FMC can not discipline a nurse.
Even the highest doctor(apart from MD) in that hospital who is the CMAC cannot discipline a nurse.
They will tell you they are under d head of nursing.
You might complain and their Oga will tell you I will look into it and that might be the end.She might laff at you even b4 you finish closing d door.
I've had cases where in the course of attending to a patient I notice something like a missing vital sign. You call the nurse in charge to do it so you can note and make informed decision on the patient, she rudely tells that she is making her shift notes and can't suspend it.Nothing you can do other than complain. You can't query her or give her punishment like extra work etc.
Now in that hospital, the minute by minute monitoring of the patient is b/w the nurses and d patient relative.
Either the patient him/herself complains or d relatives/care or the nurses notice something and then draws d attention of the doctor.
Now,for the doctor, when a patient comes in,he either comes to the consulting room or at the emergency.
The doctor attends to d patient ,does his own part of the treatment like suturing if need be or just prescription and hands over to the nurse. He also makes a mental note of like"I will come and review this patient after 2 or 4 or 6 hours etc.
He might go off to see another patient in his consulting room or even in another ward or even go to his call room to rest.
It is now d job of the nurse to draw his attention if there's a new development about a patient he previously attended to.
Hee either goes back to the patient or tells d nurse what to give/do if he is busy with a more serious case.
That is why nurses do 6 and 12hrs shifts and are by far more in number but a doctor can work straight 32 to 36 hours or more when he is on call.
Now,if yawa gas, a panel is set up and whoever is deemed guilty faces d music solely or all d ppl involved (doc included) if all found to be wanting.

When i say God's intervention, it does not necessary means that God will have to come down from heaven to do so. Someone is heading the hospital and the people taking care of the patient are being paid for the services they are rendering. What happened to the value for human life, fear of GOD and the conscience of the hospital staffs, i mean, none of them could be serious enough to know about running out of what they use in saving lifes. And that is partly what i meant by God's intervention.

Those defending nurses here are likely nurses. Go to any hospital or be admitted in any hospital especially Govt hospitals then you will know 95% on nurses are disgruntled and not ready to work
