Erection begins to occur when a man is sexually aroused either physically or psychologically.
This action is mastermind by one of the nerve system called Para-Sympathetic Nervous System.
the arousal triggers the release of a substance in the body called Nitric Oxide, This substance causes an increase Level of a powerful substance called cyclic GMP (Guanosyl MonoPhosphate) The Latter perform the wonders of erection by causing forceful opening and enlargement of the blood vessels supplying blood to the penis. thereby causing blood to rush into the chambers of the penis.
(Corpus Cavernosum and Spongiosum)

These erectile tissues when filled with blood expand both in length and in width and by so doing compress the veins (blood vessels carrying blood away from the pains), thus blocking out flow. when these happen, the blood -filled peins becomes strong and rigid, thus erection.

However, following ejaculation or loss of the sexual stimulus, another substance called Phosphodiesterase is released in order to bring the penis back to normal, otherwise the penis will remain erected with the associated pains. a condition common among Sickle Cell patient known as Priapism.

The substance Phosphodiesterase causes quick reduction in that substance that open the blood vessels i.e Cyclic GMP.

By so doing, it reduces the inflow while increasing the out flow of blood from the peins, thus bringing about loss of erection.

this process of erection ought to continue throughout the life of a man even as the sperm production also persists throughout the life span of a man. However, we can make the following deduction from the erection mechanism discussed so far.

1 Whatever that increases blood flow to the erectile tissues of the penis invariably increase the rate and strength of erection.
2 Whatever that block or impairs blood flow to the penis invariably decreases the rate and strength of erection, thus impotence.
