salford: You people need to stop quoting Pius Adesanmi at me, I dont know who he is, unfortunately. I had never heard of him before what happened. If Nigerians cannot be upfront about whatever they are doing, but constantly make it a habit to work secretly and silently while attaching relevance of their plots and secret activities, to someone they keep in the dark , stop linking my mentions to entities I dont know. It's annoying. As per your objection, I had no remittances from outside unlike you folks who enjoy that. So reduce your emotional hysteria over money and think with a clear mind. Dependency on people's at whim and sporadic remittance is not a good thing and neither can it ever match stability in income. 2 Likes |

salford1: My job here involves confronting trolls, I suspect you're one, hence your contributions on this thread. The topic was a response to another, perhaps you should do a search and find out why I started the thread. Your (ie you people's) fixations btw, never go beyond tpia or musiwa, I wonder why. Do you feel bad because other people are intelligent? Why not boast of making money. Now, don't derail the thread, I don't believe Nigerians will not survive without remittances from overseas. End of discussion. If you have a contrary opinion, you've stated it already so let it go. Don't quote Pius Adesanmi at me again, I don't know who he is and I don't appreciate the linkages which I had nothing to do with. Quote him on his own merit, don't quote him at me. 1 Like |

My brothers or Bloodars, US is beautiful, fine, developed, Law and Order but brothers no be so ooo as you dey watch am for TV. Most of their infrastructure are old fashioned like the train system and others but all the same na sweet country but when it comes to Money matters E NO Easy for America. Many Nigerians want to come back but just that Nigeria is no safe and the energy issue in Nigeria. It will be a little easier to make it in Nigeria than America unless you are a professional ( STEM). Everything here is credit from car to even phones and if you default you know the next thing, you lose all that. To survive here in US no be beans, not easy espcially if you dont have proper papers even if you have that paper you will still not make it that much unless you enroll in a college to advance your qualification and college is not cheap. Education is expensive in US followed closely by accomodation then other things. Working here in US is not easy, working menial job like cleaning and others, my brothers your body go tell you. The system here in US is you will work to just live life and very hard to save unless you are doing 2 jobs and with that 2 jobs it wont be easy for you especially if you have kids. Imagine 10$ to 15$ per hour x 8 x 5 days × 2 ( 2wks pay check) and even before you have that paycheck, expenses are just by one corner laughing and waiting to consume the paycheck. The more closer to the city the more expensive and more expenses. Not really easy ooo. Forget the exchange rate that a cleaner is earning 1500 a month, my brothers , Bill is on one side waiting to consume it all. Nigeria is not better but living in US no be beans ooo. WETIN MY EYES DON SEE FOR THIS YANKEE I NO FIT TALK. Yankee sometimes dey make me laugh, cry, confused and strong. If you survive in Nija and US there is no where in the world you wont survive 5 Likes |

carsellerNG:One's man's meat is another man's poison. I thank God for all my friends in the US. Most if not all travelled to the States on scholarships. They are all now doing well in their respective fields. They are doctors, pharmacists, scientists, engineers, technologists, nurses etc. They often try to convince me to move to the states. The US pays more for STEM than my current home (Canada) sometime double the wage, but I am content with my earnings here. Just as you have mentioned, my believe is that if an immigrants strives hard to educate themselves either by going for a PG degree in their new country or re-educate themselves in a STEM or IT field, they will find themselves moving up the ladder quickly to middle or upper middle class instead of getting stuck on survival jobs. Atleast the US gives you the opportunity to better yourself. In Nigeria, you will study a STEM course and still end up jobless. Before I moved to Canada, people told me: oh you will wash toilets, you will stock shelves, you will work in deadend minimum wage jobs e.t.c. Even though I met immigrants working in deadend minimum wage job, that is their story not mine. Even with the minimum wage job, there is dignity in labour. One of my doctor friend worked minimum wage for 3 years as a carer, but now makes close to $300k per year. As for me, I am doing very well and working in a professional STEM field: bank akkant is smiling. I am glad I left Nigeria and grateful to God for the life I live here. It's been laughter all through. Remember the story of Caleb and Joshua. Which report would you rather believe? Some saw giants while other see a land flowing with milk and honey. 7 Likes 1 Share |

I'm flabbergasted that the tangential topic of what it takes to be financially successful in Nigeria or the U.S. is still being debated, what with all the information publicly available. A quick look at what groups are financially successful in either country will tell you what's up in each location. I personally don't know any immigrant in the U.S. who went back to school or upgraded their education or is a working professional that is struggling. In Nigeria, if you want to be financially secure, you need to either work for an oil company, or customs/immigration, be a politician in the ruling party, be a high ranking policeman or member of the armed forces or hone your yahoo skills ..... among other things..... (any position where you have the public by the literal nuts and can seek proverbial patronage). Any Nigerian that comes to hustle in the US (menial jobs) without a long term plan to upgrade will have a relatively uncomfortable existence, just like their American citizen counterparts working similar jobs. However, if the intention is to work several jobs and send the money home to support family and build up some assets there, then I guess it may be worth it for them. Think about it, this is exactly what the Chinese and Indians are doing in Nigeria. They take advantage of the fact that Nigerians treat foreigners better than themselves. You see high school graduates from India or China come to Nigeria and take up managerial positions with relatively large pay, supervising much better qualified Nigerians. They have all the benefits of an expatriate position and repatriate their earnings back home to family while living almost expense free in Nigeria. 1 Like |

carsellerNG:Common now. The bills are same in Canada. Our tax is even higher. Nigerians will also gladly pay those bills if the government can supply them with proper amenities like constant running water anf electricity, fast and reliable internet, excellent health care etc. Yes naija is easy especially if you are the type that loves to make fast money illegally or via politics. The guys I mentioned above are the lucky ones because they decided to try US schools not Uk or Canada, and they are regular guy/babes with second class upper from naija unis. Maybe one or two have a first class degree. If guys with degrees from funny sounding names universities that oyinbo can't pronounce are been picked and handed free tuition via scholarship by the US, how much more someone that is ready to study hard and has a green card? You see. I would give you 3 examples in Canada. Here, it is incredibly hard to get a scholarship due to massive competition from around the world and we are are a small country, so most if not all new immigrants intending to further have to get student loans. Student loans are not cheap in Canada. However, someone I know took out a loan for a Bsc Nursing program. She was over 60k in debt after grad in 2015. Interestingly, she got a job straight out of school. With overtime, her last year's earning was around $130k. How did I know how much she earned? When you earn above 50k a year, the government of the province I live in will publish your name on a public document called a sunshine list. Your name and earning for that year will be published. Another guy I know took out a 30k loan to take a diploma in a community/polytechnic college. He got a job straight after graduation in 2017 and made $80k in his first year without OT i.e atleast $43 bucks an hour starting wage. A friend of mine also took a community college course in power engineering in 2017 with around 50k in student loan. This year, he is already at $80k in sept, and the year is not even over yet. One of the guys I listed up there use to work for a microfinance bank in Nigeria before he relocated. The dude will walk all over lagos looking for clients for a meagre a salary of just 40,000 naira per month. Half of his monthly earning goes on transport fair. The good thing about student loan. They all have 10 to 15 years to pay back the loan, but they can also pay it back within 2 years without penalty if they decide. Life is all about choices. These guys did not sit back and moan about how life is tough in North america. Some worked a few years of survival jobs before they said enough and took the bulls by the horn. na money we dey take find money sometimes. 10 Likes 1 Share |

Bro,i think IT is the go to other than STEM as the exam fees are relatively small to what one may pay in college and one can get a job using IT certs as they are mostly world recognised without going to colleges |
