Not his fault... It's a sorry case of poor Indoctrination!!! grin
grin grin I think it’s about time nurses start organizing seminars for the public on “what nursing is, the role of nurses, their job description, ethics and many more” Edakun. Nursing is a profession on its own, because I’m tired as it is right now. Sighs.

Yes... Both courses are relevant and equally lucrative. Claiming that one course trumps another is a fallacy borne out of poor orientation. This is supposed to be the essence of Guidance Counselling in schools.

The success of a career is not essentially or exactly in the course itself, but more on the drive, passion, and motivation of the individual graduate of the program.

They are both allied health practitioners.
A pharmacist is a professional involved with the compounding and dispensing of medications, and it also includes more modern services related to health care , including clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information.
A Nurse is a professional within the health care sector focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life.

The norms in the world for pharmacy training is Doctor of pharmacy, and this training takes 6 years ( the Bachelor of pharmacy is still being attained in some institutions). In Nigeria here Only Uniben and unilorin that has fully started 6 yr Doctor of pharmacy program while the rest still runs B.pharm. Bsc nursing takes 5 years in Nigeria. After the 5-6 years university training, they both undergo another form of training called internship in an accredited Teaching hospital or Federal medical centre.

Let's talk about Job opportunities.

A pharmacist can be employed by both as Clinical pharmacist in the hospital, community pharmacist in pharmacy retail outlet , research Institute ( new drugs invention) , pharmaceutical companies ( where drugs are produced). All the ventures in which they can be employed are either government owned or private enterprise. And they both pay well.
The road to self employment is another path a pharmacist can tour. You can have your shop and make your hundred of thousands to millions.
A nurse can like wise be employed by either government or a private venture in an hospital. The hospital is literally the place a nurse can only be employed. Though NGO's sometimes employs for community outreach and co.
A nurse can also choose to be self employed by having his nursing home and rendering his services to the ailed.

Both Nurses and pharmacist can also become tutors of there various profession in the university if they should have higher degree( the pay is literally the same).

And base on abroad opportunities, nurses has more chances of being employed and practice there profession compared to Pharmacists.

@ the op, the ball is in your court

But note, they are all path to an average life in Nigeria except you add entrepreneurship to both profession.
Brilliant response

I hope its B.Sc nursing and not the RN nurses. The former is respected, while RN are not even graduates to start with and don't attract much respect home or abroad. Pharmacists are highly respected and better paid. Its a tough course anyway. The reason nurses are well paid abroad and are on higher demand abroad(even more than doctors) is because they do the dirty works in d hospitals like cleaning and dressing wounds (be it clean, dirty or infected wounds), cleaning shit, vomit , urine or poos on bodies of patients, also they are more involved in caring for the sick , bed-ridden, paralyzed , disabled and old people..

In Nigeria, Nurses are doctors slaves. I've seen instances where a nurse runs Erands completely out of work for a doctor

A nurse who really went to federal medical or nursing school will never condescend to low for a doctor to use her as domestic agents

As a mater of fact, they are well educated and stubborn when you want to push them around

But all those trained as auxiliary nurses, you can even use them for anything because, their entry requirements are not science subject in waec but to just be a nurse

They should... But, more importantly, there should be better guidance to these young secondary school leavers. Medical courses shouldn't be for the money-minded, but those passionate about healthcare delivery.

The problem with this thread is that the answers are from people who are outside the sector.
Opportunities keep increasing continuously for nurses. Even in Nigeria, nurses get NGO jobs more than even doctors, occupational health nurses are more in demand in companies. A traditional hospital can only employ a few pharmacists but majority of staff will be nurses and most reputable facilities are employing degree nurses now.
Overall, both are great professions but I think nurses have more opportunities currently.
You have limited knowledge about pharmacy!

Those alluding to the fact that nurses have better opportunities abroad seem not to be aware that no pharmacy opens in America even when the pharmacist is only out for lunch. The pharmacy must remain closed until the pharmacist is back from lunch. They also don't know about NAPLEX which qualifies a Nigerian trained pharmacist for licensure in the US.

Where pharmacists can work include:

Hospital, academic, Industry (production, quality control, sales etc), community, NGOs, Government agencies and parastatals, research institutions, military, etc

In a nutshell, pharmacists have broader scope of work than nurses.

So much ignorance in one post.
There are other professions that do that (LPNs/LVNs and CNAs). It's only if those are not available that a RN might jump in.
In addition, Nurses have high earnings due to overtime hours.
In addition, RN (registered nurses are majorly BSc holders).
Nurses do also earn respects. About two years ago, the head of the Provincial(state) Health service in a Canadian province was a Nurse.

I do agree that Pharmacist are better paid. Requires more years of training. That is the only true information in your post.

And OP, Nurses are in high demand abroad. I dont even see the demand going down in years to come. Nurses are still being recruited from Asia and Africa to fill up nursing positions in Europe and America.
Just check Nairaland travel section to see testimonies. If your dream is to leave Nigeria, choose Nursing. If it's to stay in Naija, choose Pharmacist.

I respect ur view, but I diagree with it. I normally would relate nurses to a secretary.. their primary duty is to follow the instruction of the boss/ Dr..

Clearly one course is superior to the other..note I didn't say the person..

Continue to display your ignorance for the whole world to see! So, who else should "sell'' drugs if not pharmacists? Do you know that in the developed countries, no drugstore opens without a superintendent pharmacist? And even if the pharmacist goes for lunch the pharmacy must remain closed until he/she is back
Do you know why? Because they understand the dangers of uncontrolled drug use and the inherent disease burden it creates for the the nation and the high morbidity and mortality rate that can result from drug misuse and abuse.

Nigerian pharmacists don't make drugs according to you yet you take emzor paracetamol and other drugs made in Nigeria.
