The award has continued to generate mixed reactions from football fans all over the world. While Messi performed admirably in the calendar football year winning the Spanish LaLiga and emerging the highest goal scorer in the Uefa Champions League too, Most fans believe that Dutch defender, Virgil Van Dijk deserved to be named the best having captained Netherlands to the Uefa Nations League Finals losing to Ronaldo’s Portugal while also winning the 2019 Uefa Champions’ League with Liverpool, receiving the Uefa best player award as a result.

Was this the first time that a Dutch high flyer will be ignored for the awards? Definitely not! Is it a case of history repeating itself? Very likely!

Virgil Van Dijk (a Dutch) captained Netherlands to the Uefa Nations League Finals losing to Ronaldo’s Portugal. He also took Liverpool to Uefa Champions League glory in May 2019, winning the European footballer of the year as a result. Guess what? He was not crowned the best player in the world.

In 2010, Wesley Sneijder (also a Dutch) was awarded the best midfielder in the Uefa Champion’s League and won the treble (Coppa Italia, Seria A and the Uefa Champions League) under Jose Mourinho. Guess what? He didn’t even make the final 3-man shortlist (Andreas Iniesta, Lionel Messi and Xavi were the shortlisted top 3) for Ballon D’Or of 2010.

The beneficiary of both cases of controversial awards? Lionel Messi!

Which conspiracy? VVD did not take Liverpool to champs league glory. Liverpool won by virtue of notable performances from Origi, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Allison in the SF and Final. Mane and Salah in the QF. VVD's outstanding performance was in the second round against Bayern munich. How do you now think this is better than Messi's outstanding performances in the SR, QF and First leg of the SemiFinal. The La Liga that Messi won, he was the main protagonist, so when you combine all of these individual factors, Messi takes the cake, except you are being unobjective.

Many players have won the award without winning any major trophy in the year they won it, case in point, Ronaldinho in 2004, Figo in 2001, Zidane in 2003, CR7 in 2013.

The FIFA Best player is first and foremost, an individual award, and in all honesty, VVD and Messi's performances over the past season are still miles apart.

You did not raise this issue when CR7 won over Ribery on the basis of individual performances even though Ribery won all the most important trophies. I submit that you are just a pained CR7 fan.

Fifa always put Messi ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo. At least three of the Messi's awards are gifts. Every year the rules keep changing simply to favour Messi.
