Any state in Niger Delta has already gotten her fair share of environmental devastation due oil exploration. For any one to sign Mou to build a nuclear power station in Akwa Ibom state without EIA is indirectly trying to wipe away the entire state. In a clime that cannot curtail common flooding or fire incident, how would they be able to tackle nuclear reactor accident should one occur!

Nigeria selects sites for 4,800MW nuclear power plants

NAEC Chairman Erepamo Osaisai was cited by Daily Trust as saying: "Detailed evaluation and characterisation to be conducted on preferred sites on the approval of the government in Geregu, Ajaokuta Local Government Area of kogi State and Itu in Itu LGA of Akwa Ibom State."

NAEC revealed in April that it has been discussing with Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy corporation Rosatom for construction of the nuclear facilities in the country.

Fake news from another nameless n useless website.

SPECIAL REPORT: Amidst safety concerns, Nigeria signs nuclear power project with Russia’s Rosatom

At a meeting in Abu Dhabi in October, 2017, Russia signed an agreement with Nigeria to build and operate a nuclear power plant, the first of its kind on the continent, as well as a research centre that would house a nuclear research reactor.
The agreement was a furtherance of a memorandum of understanding signed last year between the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, NAEC, and Rosatom for the construction of four nuclear power plants at the cost $20 billion (more than N6 trillion). The four plants will have a total capacity of 4,800 megawatts by 2035.

A country that can not boast of anything they have successfully managed is thinking of Nuclear Reactor, ordinary train tracks some persons are busy removing the bolts every day. Please shelve this idea till 2040 possibly our mentality would have changed

After reading most of the comments here, i have come to realize that most people who comment on Nairaland don't do their findings about about topics being thrown to the floor ''except few'' The first thing to be done i believe, was to check the importance of Nuclear Power Plants and Reactors, How many developed countries make use of it and how effective it as been to the usefulness of Mankind.
We complain about darkness yet refused to make findings how other developed countries with equivalent number of population was able to rid themselves of endemic called darkness.
South Africa enjoys uninterrupted power supply in which nuclear power plant contribute 5% to her electricity supply.
People complain about the potential hazard it pose to our existence, if that was the case then we should forbid the use of Vehicles and other machinery since they all pose potential threat to life.
Please lets appreciate something for ones after all the president can not make use of it alone

It happened in Fukushima not Hiroshima

Almighty Japan with their sophisticated technology is still suffering from Nuclear Disaster. Russia that could not help themselves when they had nuclear disaster and they are the one bringing nuclear reactor to Nigeria.

Buhari should build this in Daura or Sambisa forest.

Solar energy bro start from there.
Solar has killed 100X more people compared to Nuclear while still generating a meager amount of energy at astronomical cost!

Nuclear is the safest, greenest, and cheapest energy source. It should be our priority.

A simple knowledge about risk analysis would tell you it is the best. It is like air travel despite of things go wrong, it is still the safest means of travel by far. And it would foolhardy to rule out air travel in your life just for fear if a plane crash.
Before anybody quotes me, I am a Chemical Engineer, and I work right in the middle of the energy sector, so I know what I am saying.

Evil people want Nigerians to live in darkness forever because of their selfish interest, always looking for excusses not to let things work in this country, their attempts will fail...we will get the power sector working wether they like it or not.

Build it in Sokoto or Sambisa Forest

The people of Akwa Ibom and Kogi don't want it,
You can call on the federal government to site it in your region

that's correct about the nuclear accident in Japan. But, was it tsunami that caused the accident that killed some scientists in Russia as well? Or was it not the Russian scientists that were in charge? The truth is, Nigeria is not ripe to use Nuclear power. It can be catastrophic.

Nuclear power is completely safe and has done far, far less damage to humans and the environment than oil, coal and even hydro power in the storied history of power production.

There have been only three major incidents in over 70 years of commercial nuclear power, Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and Fukuoshima but as air transport and air tragedies are in the sphere of transportation accidents, publicity and the press rules over common sense and bare statistics. Air transport remains statistically the safest means of transport just as nuclear power remains the safest means of generating electricity.

Nuclear technology has improved in leaps and bounds over the decades and future technology points to reactors that donot require continuous cooling or control rods. France is the most nuclear power dependent country in the world and it hasn't suffered a single accident or suffered a single fatality in its history. We can get them or their peers to BOT nuclear plants safely and economically for decades to come.

Moreover we should all be concerned about the levels of carbon-dioxide and sulphur-dioxide coal and oil plants churn out. If you stay in Portharcourt and experience the pollution from bootleg refiners then you will understand where Nigeria is headed to if it decides oil and gas will be its only energy resource.

Nothing at all wrong with nuclear.

Please let's start from solar and wind. If we add these two sources to hydro power we would have generated enough power for our consumption.

Nuclear reactors no be beans o! Ordinary gas pipeline we no fit maintain.

the fact that you claim to be a chemical engineer don't qualify you to talk about nuclear power, this is not a matter of distillation and electrophilic and nucleophilic substitution etc it's a matter of particle physics, quantum mechanical high energy interaction, biological, environmental, sociological and economic consequences and even energy efficiency and optimisation.
