After reading most of the comments here, i have come to realize that most people who comment on Nairaland don't do their findings about about topics being thrown to the floor ''except few'' The first thing to be done i believe, was to check the importance of Nuclear Power Plants and Reactors, How many developed countries make use of it and how effective it as been to the usefulness of Mankind.
We complain about darkness yet refused to make findings how other developed countries with equivalent number of population was able to rid themselves of endemic called darkness.
South Africa enjoys uninterrupted power supply in which nuclear power plant contribute 5% to her electricity supply.
People complain about the potential hazard it pose to our existence, if that was the case then we should forbid the use of Vehicles and other machinery since they all pose potential threat to life.
Please lets appreciate something for ones after all the president can not make use of it alone
Nigeria CANNOT manage a nuclear plant which will lead to catastrophic disaster!

Nuclear plant needs a constant source of large volume of water for operations. The closet large water bodies to the "core north" are rivers Niger and Benue. Both rivers already have massive hydro projects, so after much survey Lokoja and Itu were considered the best sites for the projects. Mind this project was first initiated by Yar'adua administration.
Also you can read from the initial alarmist write-up, nowhere in Nigeria would be safe.

you think you can go anywhere near a nuclear plant in europe....??
Nigeria is not Europe. In case you have forgotten, this is the same Nigeria where Boko Haram easily overran a military base. A military base manned by trained soldiers.

Please... Wake up from your wishful thinking. If Nigeria was like Europe, you'd have had better roads, a less corrupt government, a more reliable police force, etc

Your passport also likely wouldn't be worthless.

Ask the mumu if a terrorist group can seize a Navy Base in the UK.

Boko Haram terrorist seized a Navy Base in Borno State.

This sounds impossible but it happens in Nigeria.

So all the miles of uninhabited desert land in North is not good to site such life and health affecting installation? It has to be Akwa Ibom and Kogi States, where every square inch of land is inhabited by humans, fertile land for agriculture and other life forms...where any nuclear accident will have maximal damaging effects?...ok o!

the Ecowas passport is even more worthless than the Nigerian passport. It's useless outside West Africa (15 countries).

Who cares about the Biafran passport?

Until you are harassed at an airport just because of your passport, you wouldn't have any idea how far behind Nigeria is. Our nation is incompetent, and other countries are well aware. Your wishful thinking wouldn't change it.

'realistic' is the word you are looking for. It's because of the Nigerians like you who keep living in denial that we are unable to confront our weaknesses and work on them. There are always those who prefer to pretend Nigeria is Europe.

Yeah, like the 3000MW increase per year that was promised when this government came into power ever happened.

Chernobyl didn't happen in the 40s and 50s. The Chernobyl was caused by corruption. The reaction in the nuclear reactor is stopped by dropping control rods into the reactor. Control rods are made with boron, which acts to stop the reaction, Russia made their control rods with graphite which acted as a positive catalyst that caused the explosion.

That is not what caused the Chernobyl accident. It was caused by a improperly conducted test of the shutdown mechanism. It was human error. The reactors in question were old 40's and 50's designs.

I didn't say the incident occured in the 40's. It occured as a result of a design protocul that was hidden behind the soviet union when there was no peer review or vetting by the IAEA.

All modern nuclear plants are open to international scrutiny, their designs vetted by the IAEA and Russia's designs are more in tune with western concepts.

Water is not the fluid of choice used in the modern reactor process. Liquid sodium is far more efficient in extracting heat from the core and through an exchanger. It is the cooling of the steam back to water off the steam turbines that takes much water but even that is beginning to be replaced by helium.

Nuclear plants of the future will not require huge water bodies to function.

The reactor built at Chernobyl is a RBMK reactor, which was never built by any country outside the USSR because it had characteristics that were rejected everywhere outside the Soviet Union. Chief among these was its inherent instability, especially on startup and shutdown. Because of the way the reactor used graphite where American reactors use water, when Soviet operators tried to reduce power the RBMK had a tendency to sharply increase power production instead. As overheating became more severe, power increased even more.

In 2018, the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) reported that the accident also was responsible for nearly 20,000 documented cases of thyroid cancer among individuals who were under 18 years of age at the time of the accident in the three affected countries including Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian Federation. This was due to the high levels of radioactive iodine released from the Chernobyl reactor in the early days after the accident. Radioactive iodine was deposited in pastures eaten by cows who then concentrated it in their milk which was subsequently ingested by children. This was further exacerbated by a general iodine deficiency in the local diet causing more of the radioactive iodine to be accumulated in the thyroid.

Both the IAEA and UNSCEAR report that health studies of cleanup workers fail to provide a direct correlation between radiation exposure and an increase of any other forms of cancer attributable to radiation exposures. However, the psychological effects of Chernobyl remain widespread and profound resulting in suicides, alcohol abuse and apathy.
Most emergency workers and people living in contaminated areas received relatively low whole-body radiation doses, according to a United Nations study published in 2008. The study found no evidence of increases in solid cancers, decreased fertility or congenital malformations. However, there is “some evidence of a detectable increase” in leukemia and cataract risk among workers who received higher radiation doses when engaged in recovery at the site. Long-term health monitoring of these workers is ongoing.

Soviet scientists reported that the Chernobyl 4 reactor contained about 190 metric tons of uranium dioxide fuel and fission products. An estimated 13 to 30 percent of this escaped into the atmosphere. Contamination from the accident scattered irregularly, depending on weather conditions. Reports from Soviet and western scientists indicate that Belarus received about 60 percent of the contamination. A large area in the Russian Federation south of Bryansk also was contaminated, as were parts of northwestern Ukraine.

Soviet authorities started evacuating people from the area around Chernobyl within 36 hours of the accident. In 1986, 115,000 people were evacuated. The government subsequently resettled another 220,000 people. can Nigeria fraud government resettle people that will be affected? and where is government going to settle Nigerians the government plant ethnic division into their blood? easy to sign the contract that will kill people without minding the occupant of the area
