12-Year-Old Boy Used To Perpetrate Rice Fraud In Lagos In Tears by titiloyeblog: 12:14am On Dec 10, 2019
Nigerian writer, Richard Henshaw, has shared the story of how a little boy was innocently used to defraud a shop owner in Lagos state earlier today December 9th. Richard who shared photos of the little boy, wrote;

Just about three hours ago, a little boy got into the bleakest nightmare of his life...Twelve years of age.A minor.

I heard pandemonium from where I was.

Treated it with reckless abandon from the start.

But it persisted.

And I reckoned that something was wrong.

I went out to look.

A crowd had gathered in a shop.

Screams and tears wafting out from the scene.

I walked over there.

And I met this little boy in tears.

Manhandled by the crowd.

I asked what had happened.

The boy who was at the shop narrated.

One boy came to their shop and told him he wanted two bags of rice.

Then he gave him a phone to speak with someone who said she was the boy's mother.

And the woman said she was sending his money to him immediately, that he should allow her son bring the bags of rice.

Then the bigger boy said that his younger brother would wait behind while he went to bring the money.

He left the little boy behind and went with the two bags of rice on a bike.

The shop boy waited for a prolonged time, then became perturbed.

He then turned to the little boy and asked, "Why is your brother taking so much time na?"

And the little boy replied, "He's not my brother oo. I don't know him before. He just met me on the road and brought me here..."

The shop boy's eyes raised in alarm.

He held the boy.

His voice alerted a crowd.

The crowd descended on the boy.

"You are a little criminal. Where did your friend take the bags of rice to?" They screamed at him.

Slaps.

Hits.

"I swear I don't know the boy," the boy wept.

When I arrived, I dragged the boy aside and had a conversation with him.

And he said, "Oga, I swear I no know that boy. I pick cartons on the streets and sell them, that's how I take dey get money. So today I been dey street and I was thirsty, so I come see the boy and ask him make him help me with water. The boy promise to give me water, but say make I follow am. He then said that anywhere we go make I dey claim say I be him brother. So we enter bike and he brought me here. He then collect two bags of rice from here and say make I wait behind that him want go bring money come. And na so him go and no come back, and leave me here..."

It was hard to comprehend this.

How someone could see a minor on the street, cajoled him to follow him.

Played on his little senses.

Exploited his circumstances.

Took him to a shop.

Duped the shop owner of his goods.

Kept the boy behind, and told the shop owner that the boy was his brother.

Then disappeared with the goods.

And left the boy behind to face the consequences.

And put his life in danger.

In an embittered city like Lagos.

The shop owner was called on phone to come back.

He ran back to his shop and heard the news.

Felling diatribes on his boy in the shop for falling for such a scam.

And the nameless crowd was struck by anger propaganda.

Eager to descend on the boy.

"What is your name?" I asked the minor.

"David."

"How old are you?"

"Twelve."

"Where did that boy see you and bring you here?"

He muttered some gibberish.

"Do you know the boy's house?" I asked.

"No."

"Have you met the boy before?"

"No. But while we were coming here he pointed to one shop and told me that that is his mother's shop."

"So can you take us to that shop?"

"Yes."

"Bros, this boy na small criminal. This boy know that boy. They are together." Some said.

"He was used," others said. "Maybe he doesn't know anything about it. Maybe that boy just saw him and decided to use him."

And in that case it was difficult to know which one was true.

Then a friend brought his vehicle immediately, and both of us alongside the shop owner took the boy away to go and make efforts to find the boy.

Away from the attacks of the angry crowd.

To go to the shop which the minor said the boy had pointed at, and claimed to be his mother's shop.

And as we set off, we discovered that the little boy had been used.

He had actually been used.

You look at this and you wonder, what if that boy had taken this little boy to an environment where he would not be able to come out alive?

What if there were no people to save him?

He could have died in a show of savagery because of two bags of rice.

A scheme from someone he didn't know.

A claim that so many people didn't believe anyway.

And in that little boy's nightmares, I saw the true picture of our society.

In all its irony.

And.

Metaphor.

I saw the mechanical disregard for humanity.

The reckless abandonment of innocence.

Stay woke.

Stay safe even in an insane world.

Lagos!

A "12 years old" street boy that picks carton to sell on the street is = 25 years old in civilised country age. I can say with 98% certainty that this boy is far from innocent, this is a well planned scam...... angry

i can remember how my parent always gave us strict warnings when it comes to festive period especially during the 'ember' months..
These are times when the wicked and evil minded people steal, kidnap, exploit, dupe and kill innocent people for some selfish interest...
well it's quite unfortunate and disheartening that the little boy was at the wrong place at the wrong time.(unforseen occurences befall us all in one way or another)

these are merely part of the pangs of distress we encounter knowing fully well we live in the time of the end.

See you, some dey pick bottle to survive. Some go round to clean while some go round to beg. I have a 14 year old in my house as I type. He stopped me on the road begging for money and I asked him what he wanted money for, he said to eat. I was too afraid to give him my money so I took him to a road side canteen not too far from where I was having meeting. I told the food vendor to give him food whatever he wants and I paid. Still I was disturbed in my spirit. I didn't like the way he's looking so tattard and dirty. I questioned him while he was eating. I asked for his parents, he said his mom is late and his dad is in Ibadan. He ran away from his village because his step mom was maltreating him bla bla bla. I asked him where he lives, he said he sleeps in a bus. He waits for the bus driver to return from work at night and then he sleeps. So I asked him if he gets a job, will he work? He said yes. After his food, I told a guy in my church to go to where the boy says he sleeps at night to meet the bus driver for confirmation. Also the boy has his father and maternal uncle number which I collected. The bus driver confirmed that the boy do sleep in his bus at night and he was only using that to help him. I spoke to the bus driver. I called the boy Father, he said he was tired of the boy. He was sent to Islamic school, he refused to learn. He was asked to learn a hand work, he won't stay. So they got tired of him and don't care how he lives his life. I spoke to his maternal uncle, he said the boy mother is late and he is a poor man, he can't cater for the boy.
Anyway I took the boy home to our family house. Got him soap, sponge, towel to clean up, ask a boy in the compound to take him to the barber to cut his hair. Took one of my brothers clothes and gave to him.I took his before and after photos. I cleaned him up so my family members won't be scared of him or his looks rather. To cut the long story short, he is with us now. I took him to a government school, paid for his name to come out or what is it called, but considering where he was coming from and wouldn't want him to be polluted again, I took him to a private school not above my budget for him.

Now do you know if this boy had stayed too long on the street, even a day longer, he could fall into the hands of bad boys who will recruit, welcome him to Lagos and train him for their evil assignment.
That was all what I thought of that made me take the big risk of housing a total stranger. I didn't want him to fall into the wrong hands and even if he had, I was ready to get him rehabilitated.
And oh I went to the orphanage home but I was told they don't admit anyhow bla bla bla and someone will be going to Ibadan soon to know his father house.

That little boy up there could be a victim.
Street kids who grew up becoming somebody can relate to the story up.
It's very possible my dear...

I know the country is red with atrocities but as an informed mind you should still have some humanity in your veins. The pic of the minor crying out his heart supports his innocence. If it was the other way round, one tear no go drop for ground for mere slaps he took. Poor boy!

I have a feeling that 12yrs old knows something about the others, however the boy at the shop should be flogged very well, he wasn’t s’posed to fall for such.

May the God you serve richly bless you! This is what religious organizations in this country are suppose to tackle! But they won’t, they’d rather scam off from political criminals and the circles goes on!
