The Senate yesterday called for mandatory health insurance for all Nigerians irrespective of their social status. Chairman, Senate Committee on Heath, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, made the call in Abuja at a public hearing on a bill for an Act to repeal the National Health Insurance Scheme Act 2004 and to enact the National Health Insurance Commission Bill.

Health insurance is optional under the current Act. Oloriegbe said health insurance must be made mandatory and premium payments be subsidized for the poor.

“The uncertainty of disease or illness has made it necessary for the need of insurance and its works on certain fundamental principles – the principle of cross subsidization and solidarity where the rich support the poor, the well support the sick and the ‘haves’ support the ‘have nots’.

“This can only be achieved through making insurance mandatory and subsidization for those unable to afford insurance premiums,” he said. He said the country had made almost no progress in reducing maternal mortality. Quoting figures from the National Bureau of Statistics, he said Nigeria records about 900,000 maternal and child mortalities each year.

He said Nigeria contributed 14 percent of all maternal deaths globally, second only to India at 17 percent. “Neither is it surprising that Nigeria contributes 13 percent of all under five deaths globally, again second only to India at 21 percent. “This is not acceptable and we need to begin to reverse this trend. It is now clear that the need for healthcare reforms is very necessary,” he added.

It is a nice proposition, but since it will be about helping the poor, it is dead already

Senator Oloriegbe is ill informed. Maternity admission or treatment is already made free in all PHCs all over the country, anti-natal is free also, hence lack of health insurance couldn't have been the cause of high natality.

General insurance is for those who have a positive balance sheet and not those who live from hand to mouth as the most Nigerian do.

This can only work IF health insurance is ridiculously cheap naturally, not on the basis of being subsidized by government, that will be another way to make the government poor the more.

Other way is to make sure available medicine and medical facilities are in good shape. Combat importation and sales of fake drugs as well

Buid health facilities, bring back our doctors who went abroad for greener pastures since nothing green for naija everything red everywhere...our government health facilities should be of standard and all drugs properly checked before distribution to the communities...our health sector needs intervention

It's a good proposition and it will go a long way in helping Nigerians. But i doubt it if those shallow minded senators from the poverty infested North understands shit about this.
Little do i wonder, that this is coming from a southern senator and not another senator who thinks having four wives is worth boasting of.

With a health sector in coma?

Why can't they start by construction of 3 world class hospitals.....

Spilt specialities across the 3 hospitals, with general medical care provisions, in all 3 hospitals?

The only way this can work is, all public office holders, must NOT seek medical treatments abroad.... Buhari included......

They love to always carry the cart, before the horse..... We already know this proposal is DOA......

They give you fictitious health insurance schemes, while they buy top of ranges 35 million Toyota Camry's 2020 model.... (each)....

Nigeria is finished....

Good, at least for the first time in this govt that the Senate is thinking right. Maybe it has affected one of their family members. But I must confess, it's a welcome development.

The benefits should be clearly highlighted and it should very affordable so that all can benefit.

I shouldn't have to say this but this being Nigeria I feel I should, so here I go..

The police should be made aware that this is not another avenue to setup pedestrian checkpoint to ensure "compliance" and "collecting Roger" from defaulters.

What happened to NHIS? That only offers paracetamol......

All they need to do, is simply revamp NHIS..... But what help is a policy, when the facilities to implement, does not exist?
