@Poster, recycling of inactive SIM is a general rule not limited to just MTN. You may address your letter to NCC. The telecoms are regulated by NCC. 5 Likes |

Your open letter should be to the NCC who sets the standards Numbers are recycled everywhere even in the US. You do not own a number for a lifetime and you accepted that contract by using a SIM card. You must recharge and use your credit to use a billable service to keep using your number. 3 Likes |

The operators, MTN, etc cannot be held responsible. It's the job of NCC. Only NCC can change that. |

Imagine, my late mum's number has been given to someone else. Someone called me and said she mistakenly dialed her number while trying to call me but was surprised that it rang and someone said "hello" to her. When she told me about it, I argued that it was never possible because I was the one that switched off her phone and removed the Sim from the phone. I later dialed the number and heard the person's voice but I quickly cut the call. Can you just imagine that. This person that bought the Sim now will start receiving strange calls because people might try to reach my mum because it's not long she died. 4 Likes |

tk4rd: thanks for the write up Bro.. The problem here is our Old cargo and primitive ones called NCC , they have messed up this country hence MTN can take advantage A nation of 200Mil without database has the power to reassign subscriber identification number without any consultation either from criminal dept or society.. NCC is a disgrace and full of old fools that are in the system without basic Technology know how.. 4 Likes 2 Shares |

instead of recycling phone number they should instead extend the number from 11 to 15 digits. that way everyone can keep their old number. imaging buying a blacklisted phone number. a number that was previously used for crime. 1 Like |

I bought a new SIM card some months ago I wanted to top up airtime for internet data ,so I dial GTB ussd code from my sim 2 instead of my sim 1 . To my greatest suprise the transaction was successful and I ended up buying airtime from the previous owner of the new line account,I have to visit GTB to deactivate the line from that account 3 Likes 1 Share |

In fact I tired for all Nigeria telecommunications my Mtn line and Glo line was lost in November 2010 with phone I then went to Glo office in Ibadan they said I can not retrieve my line then while my Glo line was my official used then but I went to Mtn to retrieve my line and they gave me welcome back sim that was about Mtn. But as for my Glo line after some years the Glo line was sold a woman , I didn't known this it was one of my lost school friend that chat with on Facebook that told me he called me and a woman denied of knowing me . now me too bought Airtel for browsing in 2017 later that year I started receiving some strange calls I keep on saying to them its wrong number but that didn't stop strange calls when I get tired of this I remove the sim from my phone and later put it back , so with it I understand that it was Airtel caused it , in January this year some one called me and I told the person that is a wrong number and I end the call later she called again telling me rubbish then I end the call again later she now called for the 5th times and I told her again it's was a wrong number but she said it was her uncle that is using it and her uncle used the Airtel line to called her two days before she called me and I explained to her that am the one that is using this Airtel line now , I bought the Airtel line and I have the certificate with me . The issue of blocking someone line is bad , the Nigeria communication commission should find solution to this issue am sure there still a lots of people having some related issue as well 1 Like 1 Share |

tk4rd: For all the countries I've been, there's no difference between the way MTN recycle inactive phone lines in Nigeria and the way its done elsewhere. As a matter of fact, Nigeria is not the only country where MTN does business. I am on a business trip outside Nigeria as I write, and I have two MTN lines right now previously owned my a native here. And yes, I received his/her bank alert few days ago but which I quickly deleted. Every GSM company every place I know, recycle inactive numbers. Its not only done in Nigeria. Is Buhari's daughter the only person in Nigeria who've ever dumped a phone line before? How about millions of other Nigerians who have used several phone lines in the past but which now belong to someone else? The problem is not MTN but because you're ruled by a tyrant who can imprison you up for 10 weeks because you innocently purchased a phone line previously used by his daughter. When a country has a bad leader, the people live in fear. You jailed someone because he bought a phone line formerly used by your daughter?!!. I just can't get my head around this. This type of news is unheard of even in North Korea. 5 Likes 1 Share |

There's nothing wrong in recycling phone numbers. Infact, if numbers are not recycled, then telcos would run out of phone numbers. If you lose your phone, go to your bank and update your details and stop blaming telcos. Number recycling happens all over the world because you don't have an infinite amount of phone numbers available. 1 Like |
