CAUSES OR TRIGGERS OF MASTURBATION

I masturbated for good twenty four (24) years….from the age of 4 to 28 years…until I quit five years ago by the grace of God.

Due to the foregoing, I can authoritatively tell you there are several triggers, or preferably factors that fuels masturbation. These triggers could be mental, physical, emotional, social or psychological in nature. Without much ado, I documented Seventeen (17) major triggers or causes of masturbation:

i. Pornographic Materials: This is situation when one is attached or always around audio, visual or written materials that contains explicit sexual contents. Examples of these include: pornographic websites, sexual adverts, pornographic clips, sexual movies, adult magazines/novels, songs depicting sex etc. Once you find yourself always around these materials, you may eventually be tempted to masturbate.

ii. Sexting/Sex-Chat/Audio/Video-Sex Calls: This is one of the most common trigger or method through which many (especially young people between the ages of 15-45) people masturbate. It involves two or more people (usually male and female) texting or chatting what I consider to be ‘sexually arousing, provocative or exciting’. They make use of sexually-vulgar lingos, sexy emoticons, seductive language and exchange of explicit sexually-suggestive words to arouse themselves, which leads to masturbation eventually.
This also applies to audio/video-sex calls. However, in audio-sex, it involves audio communication that is laden with various sexual acts or suggestions. That of video-sex calls involves both parties (i.e the male and the female) seeing each other while masturbating. The funny aspect of this, is the fact that, you must not know the person from the other end to engage in this act. Hence, most ladies have commercialized their bodies for the sole purpose of this act, where men pay and watch them masturbate.

iii. Curiosity: ‘Curiosity kills the cat’, says a popular saying. This is one of the triggers I fell for that led me to masturbate for more than two decades! I ‘mistakenly’ engaged in it just once and since then, I became very curious on what it is all about. That was how I kept on engaging in it until I quitted. Be careful on what triggers your curiosity.

iv. Loneliness: Some psychologists consider masturbation a disease caused by loneliness. Loneliness here means that the person doesn’t have any social interactions with the members of the society and he is deprived of warm and friendly relationships. If loneliness continues, the person might be deprived of his interests.

v. Associating with those who always discuss about Sexual Activities: ‘Show me your friend and I’ll tell you who you are’ is yet another popular saying that depicts the power and influence of association and relationships. What you spend time hearing or seeing becomes part of you! Find your ‘square root’ whenever you find yourself amidst such friends or discussions.

vi. Skin Sensitivity: There are people whose skins are very sensitive to the point that, if they touch their skin or body in an unusual way, they tend to be sexually aroused. In such situation, how do you cope? Just keep reading!

vii. Avoidance of STDs: If you ask most people the reason why they masturbate. The most common response you will get from them is, they are trying to avoid any form of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) or unwanted pregnancy (as you will see later). To me, this is just a situation of been in-between the devil and the deep blue sea!
viii. Environments Saturated with Women Dressed Half-naked: If you find yourself in an environment where most of the ladies dress almost unclad, the tendency for you to fall under the grips of masturbation is quite high.

ix. Frustration, Stress and Anxiety: These are major triggers that you ought to watch out for. These emotional triggers have a way of dousing your tension temporarily through masturbation. You become a masturbation addict if you always resort to masturbation when faced with any of these emotional triggers.

x. Lasting Diseases/Confinement: There are various illnesses, diseases or disabilities that propel one to masturbate due to their inability to have direct intercourse with their spouse. Confinement, in this context means when one is incarcerated or imprisoned. Such persons don’t always have access to the opposite sex. Hence, they resort to masturbation.

xi. Avoidance of Unwanted Pregnancy: This is similar to item ‘vii’ in the sense that, a lady may feel, instead for her to get unwanted pregnancy, she better succumb to masturbation. Same with a guy, he may use masturbation as an alternative to avoid the trouble that comes with unwanted pregnancy.
xii. Unguarded Thoughts: The Holy Bible says: ‘Guard your heart with all diligence, because out of it comes the issues of life’. Learn to mind your mind by taking into cognizance the type of content you allow to stay in your heart. Learn to dispel any sexual-depicting information from your thoughts and you will be better for it. One of the easiest ways to do that is to enrich and flood your thoughts with positive and productive information.

xiii. Sense of Inferiority: There are folks who find it very difficult to relate to the opposite sex. They feel too ‘unworthy’ or ‘incapable’ for any lady, not to talk of approaching a lady. Such may only fantasize the girl of their dreams and probably masturbate with her image in mind in order to compensate his self esteem. Let me tell you, inferiority only exists in your mind. I’m talking out of personal experience because this trigger also contributed in fuelling my masturbation addiction.

xiv. ‘I Don’t Want to Cheat’ Mentality: There are guys and ladies who feel, in order not to cheat on their partner, they prefer to masturbate to kill the sexual urge when their partner is not around to douse it.
xv. Unsuitable Clothes: The studies conducted by the psychologists and education experts proved that wearing tight clothes, especially a tight pair of jeans may make the teenagers sexually excited and result in masturbating. This implies that, the type of clothe you wear as a lady or guy matters. If the clothe puts you in the ‘mood’, then, you ought to adjust.

xvi. Divorce: In most cases, when couples are divorced, it can force one to want to masturbate due to the absence of the partner.

xvii: ‘No Sex Period’ between partners: There are several instances when there are ‘no sex period’ between couples. This could be as a result of pregnancy, birth, menstruation, illness, disease or quarrel between the couples. Any of these can propel any of them to masturbation.
