Hmmm that place became a gully because many flood waters found their way through it.

Now that he's filled it up in the name of road construction, flood water will find other paths and may pose threats.

I guess the Nigerian way of solving a problem is to create another.

Nice one Gov Obiano

This kind of soil must be useful for something

My brother, I have been saying this but our businessmen and government are not creative. The sand surface of the south east is one of the best in manufacturing the kiln fired red bricks for building.

Go to USA and South Africa and see brick industries producing bricks from red soil. Some south African companies imports red mud soil from Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Why not set up a brick industries that will use kiln furnace to produce high quality bricks for building.

We spend millions of dollars importing bricks from south Africa for exterior rendering in buildings in Nigeria when we have the main natural resources - the red mud soil.

I bought each pack of red south African brick for 6,500 to use for my exterior covering. I would have loved to cover the whole building with red bricks but the cost is just too high.

I love brick feel of buildings. It brings out long lasting aesthetics than the paintings we usually do here.

Check out Stanford University in US, red brick houses every where.

Nigeria's red soil doesn't need colour addition to bring out the redness as the soil itself is earth red rich already.

If I have money, investing in high quality red bricks production would be my target.

Over 1000 trees were planted on the mountain slopes near the village Karkucha in Kazbegi municipality to restore degraded land and reduce the risks associated with recurrent landslides.

The tree planting and reinforcement works were implemented by the ecological farming association “Sema” with assistance from the Global Environment Facility’s (GEF) Small Grants Programme, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Kazbegi Municipality City Hall.

On 8 May 2018, representatives of Kazbegi Municipality, Kazbegi National Park Administration, UNDP and the Public School of the village Sno visited Karkucha to take part in the ongoing tree planting.

Kazbegi is one of Georgia’s unique natural reserves, famous for its stunning mountain views, rich pastures and biodiversity. At the same time, the region is prone to natural disasters, including mudflows and landslides. Excessive use of pastures, illegal tree lodging and degradation of coniferous trees over the years added up to the environmental decline and brought local pastures on the verge of depletion.

In 2017, the ecological farming association “Sema” came up with a plan to address the challenge and bring Karkucha pastures back to life. The initiative was supported by the GEF Small Grants Programme with USD 28,000.

Since then, “Sema” has carried out the geo-ecological and hydro-meteorological assessment of the affected territories and has reinforced most vulnerable slopes against erosion and landslides with the rock-filled gabions and trees. In addition to its immediate benefits, this initiative will contribute to restoring natural forest in the selected areas and raising environmental awareness among the municipality residents.

Restoration of Karkucha pastures is one of over 50 local projects funded under the GEF Small Grants Programme since 2012. The GEF Small Grants Programme is a global environmental action which provides financial and technical support to the local community projects that conserve and restore the environment while enhancing people's well-being and livelihoods. In Georgia, the GEF Small Grants Programme is being implemented by UNDP in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture.

Nigeria shows way to reverse land degradation smiley

Launched in 2015, NEWMAP — a World Bank project — has successfully restored gullies, along with catchment planning, soil and water conservation, as well as livelihood enhancement activities

Nigeria, where about 35 per cent of the total land area was affected by desertification by 2015, has rehabilitated over 1,558.62 hectare (ha) of degraded land and lifted more than 8,000 people out of poverty, through a World Bank project aimed at reducing vulnerability to soil erosion.

The programme NEWMAP (Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project) — an eight-year intervention project launched in 2015 with the help of World Bank — has shown the way in reversing land degradation, focusing on major gully erosion sites, said Salisu Dahiru, national coordinator of the project.

He was speaking during a side event at the the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification’s (UNCCD) 14th session of the Conference of Parties (CoP14) on September 4, 2019.

The NEWMAP programme has three operational components:

Gully restoration, catchment planning and management and livelihoods
Capacity building in key national and state institutions related to erosion and watershed management
Climate change and alternative energy for rural areas

The gully restoration component was designed in parallel with catchment planning, soil and water conservation, as well as livelihood enhancement activities such as grants to community members to implement selected community sub-projects. This generated income and/or provided skills that lead to employment opportunities or new start-ups, according to Dahiru.

“The project supported over 5,159 beneficiaries via grants. The people are now engaged in businesses such as livestock farming, small shops, trading, and honey production, etc,” he said.

To ensure sustainability, NEWMAP established soil and water conservation zones that communities will directly contribute to reducing erosion while conserving biodiversity and supporting sustainable forest management.

Nigeria, known for the highest rate of deforestation in the world, had between 50 per cent and 75 per cent of the land mass in 11 northern Nigerian states under desertification in 2015.

As a result of the extreme land degradation, there was formation of gullies and ravines, particularly in southeastern parts of the country. These gullies are the largest ecological challenge that the region is experiencing, Dahiru said.

“Some of these gullies can be as deep as 100 metres and as wide as 20 to 30 metres and could stretch over several kilometres,” Dahiru said.

“We consider these as end results of prolonged land degradation resulted mainly from the loss of vegetation cover and leading in loss of livelihood because majority of population is in and around the area where these gullies exist. So restoring this land has been of prime most importance to us and the community and the World Bank came to the rescue,” he added.

The second phase of the project would focus on the restoration of 10 new flood and gully erosion sites.

We are not sustainable in this part of the world. A simple sustainability way of doing things like aggressive tree planting would have stopped all these erosion instead of awarding all these corruption - infested contracts.

We don't know how to engage international development partners like UNDP, UNEP to tackle environmental challenges at a minimal cost.

We like to award big ticket contracts to compnies. The erosion will still come back. Indonesia and some other south east Asian countries have the same erosion menace but are using sustainable mechanism to curtail them.
