There are ships older than this currently in the US Navy...if its Engines are good it is good to go

The battle ready ships in US Navy are not as old as Aradu. There are classes of warships. Old ships may be used for logistics. The terrain is also not the same. The Naval Architect and the builders are based in US. Ships refitting are done in US to return ships to near factory default. A vehicle used in US for 30 years cannot be compared to a vehicle used in Abuja for 10 years.

Aradu is too old. She is only good as a training ship.

The whole Nigerian navy is no match for ordinary US Coast guards.

With warships like the Abdel Nasser , Egypt and South Africa currently has the best warships and navy in Africa. The Nigerian Navy barely makes the top 7. Even Asari dokubo's boys are better equipped than the Nigerian navy.

The Nigerian military is comfortably the fourth largest navy in Africa.

Na waoh. So this vessel remains our flagship after how many decades. This vessel that was purchased when I was the early stages of military training.... Kai. This country is just undescribable.

Nobody knows what is happening now except those still in the service. It is like they have Destroyers or bigger Frigates. Aradu should have been replaced as Nigeria's Flagship.

Na. The cost of maintenence wiil not be worth it. It is like taking a Volkswagen Beetle on a cross country journey. It can do it but you must be prepared to sleep in the bush. Ships are not only engines but systems too and these are manufacturer specific and will no longer have parts to replace.

Remember, this ship was bought about the time we were purchasing Russian Mig 21 aircraft and T-72 and even before the Alpha jet series that have all been retired. It is a very old ship. Good job to keep it floating all these years but at 40 years old this year, it should be retired.

What Nigeria should be doing with this ship is to retire it and send it to our Naval Colleges for study towards reverse enginering. That is what China and India did. That is how they started building their own massive military industrial complex.

This is the best paragraph on this thread so far. I wish Nigeria could do it.

Sad but true. The NNS Aradu is wayyy behind the curve. The funds for newer ships and technology have been used to purchase the choicest apartments in Dubai, New York, Geneva and other fun spots.

Nigeria is already making ships as NNS karaduwa was made locally here in Nigeria, sure its just an OPV an can't stand the tides of the ocean, but it has sailed to Ghana and participated in a naval exercise there

https://www.nairaland.com/3548107/photostory-construction-locally-made-nnship

Also a more longer about 50meters naval ship is also under construction in Lagos, dockyard

Plus 2 naval barges also under construction

1st picture-naval barges under construction
2nd picture-NNS karaduwa in Ghana
3rd picture-3D depiction of the SDB3
4th picture SDB3 under construction in Lagos

Nice move but as it stands now we have only minimal control on pirates causing mayhem in our coastal territories. The government should eradicate this by providing enough gun boats, frigates and Corrvetes. We don't need submarine or aircraft carrier (jet) yet but what we need is at least two helicopter carrier with transport and attack choppers, that can respond to any pirate activities in our coastal territory. I know the Nigerian Navy has an agreement with most neighbouring west African countries and that was why the Nigerian Navy was able to rescue the Chinese fishing vessels that was hijacked at Ivory Coast few days ago. This frigate is too old and it will only be used for training of the personnel that will man the New frigate Nigeria just ordered. Lastly, no Navy can be strong without producing its own ships. China has the second best Navy in the world today and they achieved this by manufacturing their own battle ships and importing few of its weapon system. Nigeria Navy should enlarge its flying wings for Swift operation

You definitely know what you're talking about.

This reminds me so much about my days at the Nigeria Naval Dockyard Wilmot Point Lagos in 2014. I served as a Quality Control intern under Dormanlong Engineering in the Dockyard. Dormanlong handled the fabrication of the Seaward Defense Boat now NNS Tandra from keel to cabin, all were fabricated in Nigeria. Nigeria is blessed but we need bits of technology to move forward and shun corruption totally. Most plate fabrications were done manually, although ASTM standards were maintained throughout the contract. Thanks to the men I worked with at that time. I learnt a lot that I can’t forget in a hurry.

But we have no naval architecture nor ship building yard to start building our own. Therefore, we aren't there to be strong a builder of ships.

Nigeria has lot of dockyards, in Port Harcourt we have more 4 dockyards

WAS is a standard dockyard, FOT Onne which also builds fiberglass security boats, Surfer and can also dock a ship of more than 5000GRT

Seriously? Or you just jumped into conclusion? We have qualified Naval Architect in Nigeria and have a Ship Yard (especially WAS yard, Onne) to build a ship of more than 4000GRT
