Every law has a maximum sentence for each crime. For example, the maximum sentence for raping a minor in many jurisdictions is 20-25 years to life.

But I have never had about a minimum. So, this magistrate (not Nigerians or the Nigerian law) should be blamed for giving such a soft sentence.

The judiciary is very corrupt. Some magistrate may even throw cases out if they have been bribed. After all, when a magistrate sits before a case, the court belongs to him at that time.

However, if the Judiciary is Corrupt and the Legislative is Corrupt then wouldn't it be wise for this family to just end up taking laws into their hands and do the needful

Or may be if this family is not capable financially enough to repeal the case and request for another judge to hear the case.

It is never a good thing to take the law into one's hands because a victim can become an offender if they do so. It is better to accept an unduly lenient sentence than to commit a crime.

Or may be if this family is not capable financially enough to repeal the case and request for another judge to hear the case.

If the family is not financially capable, one of them can notify the attorney general and draw his attention to the unduly lenient sentence. 2 years for raping a minor is unduly lenient. The attorney general will surely be interested. If the attorney general is interested in the case, then there is no need for the victim and her family to be involved anymore or to even spend a dime.

However, if the family is financially capable, their lawyer can appeal.
