The National Bureau of Statistics said that Nigeria’s unemployment rate has increased to 27.1 percent in the second quarter of 2020 from 23.1 per cent recorded in 2018.

The agency which confirmed this in a statement titled ‘Labor Force Statistics: Unemployment and Underemployment Report’ which was released on Friday added that the number of persons in the economically active or working-age population (15 – 64 years of age) increased to 116,871,186 from 115,492,969 in 2018.

According to the report, more than 17 million Nigerians have become unemployed since December 2014, while the total working-age population has grown by almost the same number in those six years.

“For the period under review, Q2 2020, the unemployment rate among young people (15-34 years) was 34.9 per cent, up from 29.7 per cent, while the rate of underemployment for the same age group rose to 28.2 per cent from 25.7 per cent in Q3 2018.

“These rates were the highest when compared to other age groupings.

“The number of persons in the labour force (i.e. people within ages 15 -64, who are able and willing to work) was estimated to be 80,291,894. This was 11.3 per cent less than the number of persons in Q3 2018.

“Of this number, those within the age bracket of 25-34 were highest, with 23,328,460 or 29.1 per cent of the labour force.

“Of this number, 35,585,274 were full-time employed (i.e. worked 40+ hours per week), while 22,942,003 were underemployed (i.e. working between 20-29 hours per week).” the statement said.

Also, it’s been reported that Imo State has the highest rate of unemployment with 48.7 per cent, followed by Akwa-Ibom State and Rivers State with 45.2 per cent and 43.7 per cent respectively. Anambra recorded the lowest rate of unemployment at 13.1 percent.

“For underemployment, the state which recorded the highest rate was Zamfara with 43.7 percent, while Anambra State recorded the lowest underemployment rate, with 17 percent in Q2 2020.

“A total number of 2,736,076 did not do any work in the last seven days preceding the survey due to the lockdown but had secure jobs to return to after the lockdown,” the statement added.

Apc state!! Nothing new undecided

Unemployment rate keeps raising, some Nigerians lost their ability to reason and voted in a 3 time coup plotter, whose supporters killed Nigerians in 2011.

Anything we see, make we take am like that, actions have consequences.

Btw I don’t believe this statistics, because the unemployment rate in Imo can’t be higher than Jigawa and several northern states with no industry or companies and with a higher population.
PS: i did my nysc in the north and i know what I’m taking about.

Imo state? I strongly disagree with this findings, I'm not from imo state but I've been around Nigeria and zamfara state should be number one followed closely by all other northern states.

Do we really have correct database in the country?
Some stasticians hiding under one one guova tree will be using some stupid hand made formulae to guess our real status.
Income to population ratio in the far North does not need any summation F of X to tell us they should be at the top. Every southerner states has almajiris and babialha women.
Why giving us wrong info when our eyes sees the state of things korokoro.
God punish them all.

To be sincere I seriously doubt this present statistics!
What parameters where used and how did they conduct their survey given that Nigeria has no accurate data capturing system as well as population biodata registry.

A state not ravaged by war, insurgency or high insecurity been the state with highest unemployment rate?

Something doesn't add up, I've been following these statistics and it doesn't make sense to any sane mind that's very much aware of our present social, societal and economic realities.

These figures and statistics are highly skewed.

God help Nigeria.

I'm not surprised at all, the two reasonable jobs in imo state are government jobs and banks. And now with the increasing number of hotels and bars, hotels jobs are mostly for undergraduates. Since Achike Udenwa to this present supreme court governor, non has created jobs in the state. Their highest job creation is giving out cars for cab on hire purchase to youths. Nevertheless, Owerri is still the best place to groove.

In econometrics statistics must conform to apriori expectations (common sense) otherwise we question it again. How can Imo have more unemployment rate than Borno and other Boko Haram ravaged state? These figures does not conform to commonsense these days.

considering the way Nairaland comments work...

we all know this thread was moved to front page for Tribal Bashing and Bigotry....

so what the aim of the " WE SAY No TO SECESSION" bull they claim to stand for ...

I'm Yoruba and by No means would i take part in claiming one region is worse than the other.

The entire country is suffering unemployment. the entire country is suffering in every aspect. don't divert from the issue

Drops mic ....exits
