If you stay at a spot & shot a bullet up into the air, it will come down but not at the same spot. A bullet will only maintain its force when fired but when coming back down, air will alter its movement..

A bullet with no force/pressure can’t harm/hurt you..

Every gun has its range "distance covered" by the bullet. Once that distance is met the bullet drops to the ground. Hence the bullet becomes harmless after required speed and distance is met.
That's not entirely true, bullet move in projectile direction when shoot at an angle that's not 90 degrees.

When it's returning to the ground, it's still has enough velocity to cause damage.

The bullets fall and that's dangerous. Falling bullets can pierce roofs, wound and kill people. Firing blanks is safer.

Which is why they should first not have had any military in that place - still waiting for the government to explain why military were called for civilians.

2. They should have had only blanks if it was to “scare” the crowd.

The victims and their family need to come forward let all this he said she said not be the story again.

Theres no how you people try to twist this thing that will ever make sense
1. Why was the soldiers there in a democracy

2. Why the need to shoot with live ammunitions that can kill

3. Are the soldiers blind, they saw it was dark but yet. They were shooting?

4. After mistakenly hitting a single person, why didn't they stop. Abi that one person no get family

5. Why didn't they report the incident

6. Why didn't they assist the mistakenly shot people to the hospitals?

Infact, they should be the one helping the wounded, doing first aid. Why did they drive off after mistakenly shooting.

Why didn't they go to the hospitals to bring hospital personnel, why..., why..., why..., why..., why..., will ..., continue....
That is democracy, that is what happens in a SANE country, that is why the ARMY should be respected.

So let us even assume they were just passing by, they are in the position to help, and if they did not help, but neglect them and not on very important assignment, they deserve to be lashed.
So no matter how you twist this whole shit, the international community still need to punish by sanctioning

I've seen a hole in a roof made by a falling bullet and the hole was the exact shape of the bullet, i thank God that it didn't hit anyone cuz it could have gone through the person the way it did the roof. (My guess though)

It goes up into the air, gaining gravitational potential energy, gpe = mgh.
Since m and g are constant, the value of gpe depends only on the height, h.
A typical AK47 bullet has a mass of 8g and travels with an average speed of 715 m/s when fired. That means it's kinetic energy is about 2044.9 Joules.
Assuming the bullet is fired vertically upwards, it travels to a maximum height, converting of all this kinetic energy into gpe.
At maximum height, its gpe = initial kinetic energy = 2044.9 J.
When the bullet falls back on someone, it converts that energy into the energy of impact.
In practice, the energy is a little less because of air resistance.
Let's work with 1500 J as a worst case scenario.
If the bullet with mass 8 g hits someone from a height of 500 m, the impact force will be 3 N.
This is equivalent to an acceleration of 375 m/s².
That's quite huge!
An acceleration of 375 m/s² means that the bullet can travel from 0 - 1.125 km in just 3 seconds!
You see, that's why stray bullets kill people!

Bullets shot into the air can actually Fall with almost the same lethal muzzle velocity depending on the angle of fire and the weather forces at play at the time ..Yes falling bullets can kill .

In physics , it is called Maximum height

When the bullet get to the maximum height , it can no longer go upward again , the velocity , the force pushing it upward has exhausted, and the bullet start coming down with no force to cause any damage , even if it lands on your head ...

But most times, those shooting the gun fail to maintain upward position of the gun, as such , it can still be very harmful , mostly for AK47, or M16, which goes a long distance ....e.g , like the incident at Lekki Toll gate , when u look closely to the soldiers shooting at a point , their guns were no facing upward properly , which was the reason those at the far back end were hit by the bullets while those at the front were picking the pellets of the bullets .... If it was done intentionally , is what I can't tell of, becuase it unprofessional for soldiers to shoot in such way after enough range training exercises...

For police , they are very lazy to maintain vertical gun position while shooting as such , in most condition , stray bullet. Are prone ...e.g , at the campaign ground for Gov Fayemi in 2018. Ekiti State , the police end up shooting a dignity.

The only thing stopping a falling bullet from killing someone is air resistance caused terminal velocity.

Again, in ideal conditions energy input = energy output so that a falling bullet has the same speed and energy as a bullet shot.

However, air resistance saps some of this energy and the Bullet would typically reach ground at terminal velocity (since the terminal velocity is less than the shot velocity), thus the question is if a bullet traveling at terminal velocity can kill, which it can at high angles.

Also more Aerodynamic bullets have higher terminal velocity. So some bullets won't kill at their terminal velocity and others would.

And I watched the video. There were soldiers there shooting directly at the protesters.

Lies.. Air will prevent the bullet from returning to its initial velocity.

Why are you people arguing this, why do people duck when they throw stone up while its coming back to the ground, they should have waited for it to land on them since it can't hurt anymore...

The bullet went straight in the air with certain speed and force, it will fall at little of that same speed which can pierce human body, but it all depends on the size of the bullet just like you throwing a very big stone up and a small stone up, when both lands on someone, the bigger one will hurt more than the smaller one.

Reason why the soldiers uses 7.62mm NATO bullets, they are bigger and longer than 5.56mm bullets...

Whatever goes up reaches maximum height (h) where K.E equals P.E and it begins to fall under gravity effect with P.E = mgh and it's force F= mg *provided* it's initial velocity is below "escape velocity". If the initial velocity of the bullet is greater than escape velocity, the bullet will never return again. It hangs in the atmosphere.

being:
The bullets go up and keep travelling till gravity reduces the speed to zero. They fall back at the same speed in the absence of air. But with air resistance which is mostly the case they fall back at a fraction of the initial speed which can still be injurious or even fatal.

I believe that's what happened at the Lekki Toll Gate. Shots were fired in the air and some of the bullets fell on legs, backs, thighs etc.
If u watch the video, the soldier were not holding the gun at 90 degrees.

Bullet move in projectile direction unless in 90 degrees. Anything lower or higher than 90 degrees may likely kill someone.
